Sinopsis

"Arctic Food Sources" explores the vital relationship between indigenous Arctic communities and their traditional food systems. These systems, built around resources like preserved fish and seal meat, demonstrate remarkable ingenuity in a challenging environment. The book reveals how seasonal foraging and other practices are not just historical relics but remain crucial for cultural identity and nutrition. Traditional Arctic food systems offer lessons in sustainable resource management, highlighting practices developed over generations to ensure long-term survival. The book examines the cultural significance, ecological basis, and modern challenges facing these food systems. It presents a researched exploration, drawing from ethnographic studies, archaeological records, and contemporary scientific data. The impact of climate change, industrial development, and globalization on these traditional practices is a central concern. By understanding the intricate connections between food, culture, and environment, "Arctic Food Sources" provides a nuanced perspective on food security and cultural preservation. The book progresses by first introducing the diverse indigenous groups and their unique adaptations. It then details specific methods for harvesting and preserving key food resources. Subsequent chapters explore the ecological dynamics of Arctic ecosystems and the impact of modern challenges. This approach offers a holistic view that recognizes the importance of respecting indigenous knowledge and promoting sustainable practices.

Every day, we use products that we assume are safe. We lather on lotions, clean our homes with fresh-scented sprays, and cook meals in convenient nonstick pans without a second thought. But what if these everyday items contained hidden dangers? What if the very things designed to make our lives easier were quietly compromising our health?

The truth is, many household products contain chemicals that have been linked to a range of health concerns, from minor irritations to serious, long-term illnesses. Harmful ingredients lurk in everything from personal care products to cleaning supplies, often disguised under vague or misleading labels. Companies prioritize profit over safety, and regulatory agencies struggle to keep up with the thousands of chemicals introduced into the market each year. As a result, consumers are left exposed to substances that can disrupt hormones, weaken immune systems, and even increase the risk of chronic diseases.

Consider the shampoo you use every morning. It may contain sulfates that strip your hair of natural oils, synthetic fragrances that release harmful VOCs into the air, and preservatives like parabens that have been linked to hormonal imbalances. Or take a look at your kitchen. Nonstick cookware may release toxic fumes when overheated, plastic food containers can leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals into your meals, and even the tap water you drink might be carrying invisible contaminants.

An eye-opening exploration of the medical origins of gender in modern US history.

Today, a world without “gender” is hard to imagine. Gender is at the center of contentious political and social debates, shapes policy decisions, and informs our everyday lives. Its formulation, however, is lesser known: Gender was first used in clinical practice. This book tells the story of the invention of gender in American medicine, detailing how it was shaped by mid-twentieth-century American notions of culture, personality, and social engineering.

Sandra Eder shows how the concept of gender transformed from a pragmatic tool in the sex assignment of children with intersex traits in the 1950s to an essential category in clinics for transgender individuals in the 1960s. Following gender outside the clinic, she reconstructs the variable ways feminists integrated gender into their theories and practices in the 1970s. The process by which ideas about gender became medicalized, enforced, and popularized was messy, and the route by which gender came to be understood and applied through the treatment of patients with intersex traits was fraught and contested. In historicizing the emergence of the sex/gender binary, Eder reveals the role of medical practice in developing a transformative idea and the interdependence between practice and wider social norms that inform the attitudes of physicians and researchers. She shows that ideas like gender can take on a life of their own and may be used to question the normative perceptions they were based on. Illuminating and deeply researched, the book closes a notable gap in the history of gender and will inspire current debates on the relationship between social norms and medical practice.
