Sinopsis

In 'Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan: First Series,' Lafcadio Hearn presents an evocative tapestry of Japanese culture through a series of essays that blend personal reflections with vivid descriptions of the landscape and customs. Written in a lyrical and impressionistic style, Hearn's work invites readers into the nuances of Japanese life during the late 19th century. This series captures a moment in Japan's history as it transitions from isolation to engagement with the West, offering insights into Buddhist practices, folklore, and the profound beauty of the natural world as seen through the eyes of an outsider deeply enamored with his surroundings. Lafcadio Hearn, born in Greece to an Irish mother and a Greek father, spent much of his life immersed in the cultures of the East, particularly Japan, where he became a naturalized citizen. His unique background and experiences, ranging from his early life in diverse locales to his role as a journalist, influenced Hearn's later writings. His passion for the ethereal and the macabre finds expression in this pioneering work, as he seeks to bridge cultural divides and share the rich tapestry of Japanese life with a Western audience. For readers seeking to deepen their understanding of Japan's intricate cultural landscape, 'Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan' is indispensable. Hearn's sensitive portrayal invites an appreciation of the aesthetic and spiritual richness of a society that captivated him. This book serves not only as a historical document but also as a timeless exploration of cultural exchange, making it a must-read for those intrigued by the convergence of East and West.

René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke was born into a troubled marriage on the 4th December 1875 in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His mother, having previously lost a baby girl, would dress the young boy up in girl’s clothing.
Later his father dispatched him to a military academy at age 10 but after a miserable 5 years the young Rilke left due to illness and instead entered first Prague and then Munich and finally Berlin university to study art history, philosophy and literature.
His initial forays into literature was in poetry. His intense, mystical and lyrical style was much admired and over time inspired many in succeeding generations.
His short prose collection ‘Stories of God’, written in an impassioned burst over several nights was published in 1900 and offers a beguiling view of much of Rilke’s influences and outlook.
The following year he married the pioneering sculptor and artist Clara Westhoff. The union produced one child, a daughter Ruth.
He lived in Paris for most of the Century’s first decade where he mixed with many great minds of the time. Although he continued to write he also worked as a secretary to the sculptor, Rodin.
It was only after they settled in Switzerland in 1919 that his writing output was in full flow. Here he wrote profusely in both German and French, which included much on his previous travels, his left-wing sympathies, his religious and existential thoughts, all part of a unique and consummate style.
From 1923 on, Rilke increasingly struggled with his health which was now in constant decline and often spent time rehabilitating at a sanatorium.
Rainer Maria Rilke died of leukaemia on the 29th December 1926 in Montreux, Switzerland. He was 51.

‘When I joined the struggle as a 13-year-old boy in Soweto, I would never have imagined that one day I would blow the whistle on a special kind of corruption that was destroying the party and the values I had been fighting for all my life.’
In 2010, government spokesperson Themba Maseko was called to the Gupta family’s Saxonwold compound and asked by Ajay Gupta to divert the government’s entire advertising budget to the family’s media company. When Maseko refused to do so, he was removed from his position and forced to leave the public service. The life of this once-proud civil servant would never be the same again.
Maseko, whose activism was forged in the Soweto uprising of 1976, is a product of the struggle, and has always been unfailingly loyal to the principles of the ANC. In 2016, when the party called on members with evidence of wrongdoing by the Guptas to step forward, Maseko was the only one to do so. For this courageous act of whistleblowing, he was ostracised, slandered and even threatened.
As a former senior state official, Maseko also offers a rare insider’s view of the presidencies of Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma and of the inner workings of government.
Compelling and revelatory, For My Country shows what it takes to stand up for one’s principles and defy the most powerful man in the country.

Angela Rayner is one of the most arresting figures in British politics today. A self-declared socialist, she pursued an unorthodox route to Westminster, leaving school and giving birth to her first child aged sixteen having gained no formal qualifications. After becoming a care worker, she was a trade union representative before entering the House of Commons in 2015 as the Labour MP for Ashton-under-Lyne. She served as the shadow Secretary of State for Education for four years from 2016 and was elected deputy leader of the Labour Party in April 2020. Rayner's life story has earned her a reputation as an authentic working-class voice and, thanks to her own power base and combative performances in the Commons Chamber, she is widely considered to be a standout figure among Sir Keir Starmer's shadow Cabinet. But who is the real Angela Rayner? What does she actually believe in? What is she like behind the scenes? Can she unite the factions of her party to endorse the Starmer project? And does she harbour ambitions for the top job? This careful examination of her background and career seeks to answer these questions and many more. Michael Ashcroft's new book follows the journey of a politician who has quickly become an outspoken and charismatic presence in British public life.

Albert Einstein was a theoretical physicist who was born in Germany and is mainly considered one of the finest physicists of perpetuity. Even though Einstein is best acknowledged for developing the principle of relativity, he also contributed considerably to the development of quantum mechanics.
The 2 foundations of contemporary physics are relativity and quantum mechanics. His mass-- energy equivalence formula, E = mc2, has been called "the world's most well-known formula" simply because it is originated from theory of relativity. His work is well noted for having actually impacted science philosophy. He won the Nobel Reward in Physics in 1921 "for his services to theoretical physics, especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric influence," which was an important turning point in the development of quantum theory.
"Einstein" ended up being associated with "genius" as a consequence of his intellectual accomplishments and originality.
Let’s explore the world and brain of this genius in this comprehensive guide.
