Synopsis

In "The Signers of the Declaration of Independence," L. Carroll Judson offers a meticulous exploration of the lives and motivations of the fifty-six individuals who boldly endorsed the birth of a nation. The text is characterized by its analytical rigor, employing a narrative style that intertwines biographical sketches with historical context, allowing readers to grasp the complexities behind each signer's decisions. Judson's extensive research situates this work within the broader literary canon, reflecting the Revival of American History scholarship, which seeks to humanize historical figures rather than portray them as mere symbols of patriotism. L. Carroll Judson, a historian noted for his deep understanding of early American politics, draws from a rich academic background in both history and law. His admiration for the Founding Fathers and their principles is evident, as he brings forth their personal stories, struggles, and ideologies. Judson's previous works often focused on American political development, informing his perspective on how the Declaration was not just a political document, but also a profound moral statement influenced by Enlightenment thought. This compelling book is highly recommended for readers seeking to deepen their understanding of American history and the ideals that underpinned the founding of the nation. Judson's thoughtful portrayal of these courageous figures will resonate with anyone interested in the complexities of liberty and democracy, making it an invaluable addition to both scholarly and casual readings on American history.

Imagine that Isaac Babel’s Cossacks wassail together with Runyonesque Liverpool Jews outside the plate-glass window of a Hampstead café where a Klezmer band is playing to a packed and tea-drinking congregation of jazzmen, Hasidic scholars, surrealists, old soldiers, and retired
strippers; and you have the tone and temperature of this unique and unclassifiable memoir – no, not memoir, more a stream-of-consciousness novella – no, not a novella but a piece of autobiographical fiction – no, not autobiography but a picaresque drama conquered from the
unreliable and fertile brain of the eponymous Fastovski. And who is Fastovski? Is he real or invented? Is he perhaps the alter-ego of real-life jazz pianist, Klezmer swinger, big band leader and flaneur, Wallace Fields, who stares at us from the book’s frontispiece in shades, Diaghilev coat and moustache, over a cup of strong black coffee?
Fastovski’s not telling and anyway, who cares. This is a book to be devoured, disseminated, denounced, and delighted in. It belongs to all who think art and life are one and that the Arch-Savant of Canterbury, Issy Bonn, Rashid the Manic Berber Chef of NW3, and Mrs Karl Popper, have an equal claim on history. Hollywood has never lacked leading men who could captivate viewers with dramatic performances that depict them as suave romantics or dashing heroes, especially during the Golden Age of Hollywood, when stars like Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Cary Grant graced screens. But in the mid-20th century, one of the most popular stars was a man who’s been frequently overlooked.
Some actors were recruited based on their appearance alone, signing contracts before taking screen tests or ever having been on a stage or set. Others became overnight sensations, darlings of the public for decades. Only a few of these turned out to be excellent actors, but one of them was certainly Tyrone Power, one of Hollywood’s leading men from the 1930s into the 1950s. With a career spanning over 50 films, Power did not have to work through the system, rising to the top almost immediately at the age of 22.
Power was named “King of the Movies” for three straight years (1939 -1941) by fans, and while critics claimed that his success came from his good looks, today he is acknowledged as a good actor, among the most underestimated of this era. Power starred in a variety of film genres, and at least some contemporaries made note of his “remarkable acting range.” This included several musicals such as Alexander’s Ragtime Band, Second Fiddle, Rose of Washington Square, and The Eddy Duchin Story. He also made appearances in several dramas, including Johnny Apollo, Witness for the Prosecution, Crash Drive, and The Razor’s Edge. Power was even known for a good comedic sense in films like The Luck of the Irish, That Wonderful Urge, and Love is News.

History is often taught as a collection of facts and figures, a linear progression of events that led us to the present. However, beneath the surface of the well-known stories, there are layers of complexities, contradictions, and untold truths that have been hidden, altered, or forgotten over time. The official narratives we’ve been presented with are not always the full picture, and many of the figures we revere have been shaped by myths and legends that obscure their true nature.

In this book, we aim to peel back the layers of history to reveal the shocking truths about some of the most famous and influential figures in history. From military conquerors to political revolutionaries, from monarchs to visionaries, the people who shaped our world often have stories far more complicated than the public image that’s been built around them. We will explore the hidden aspects of their lives and legacies, exposing the human flaws, the moral ambiguities, and the unspoken motivations that defined their actions.

As we journey through history, we must acknowledge that the stories we’ve been taught are often shaped by the perspectives of those who held the power to record and tell them. Whether it’s a ruler who built an empire through ruthless conquest or a revolutionary leader whose ideals were marred by controversy, the truth is often far more complicated than the legends surrounding them. The victors, after all, write history, and sometimes that history is crafted to protect reputations, justify actions, or preserve power.

Sex workers in Singapore — and most places around the world — tend to be dehumanised, glamourised or sensationalised by the public and media alike. Rarely do mainstream narratives centre sex workers’ voices and agency. The Missing Anthology presents fifteen bold new voices from sex workers, whose writings resist society’s simplistic assumptions about sex work. In these works, authors recount their lived experiences, share their struggles and triumphs, and imagine different futures for the sex industry.

Born from an open call and writing workshops organised by Project X — the only non-profit organisation in Singapore that provides social, emotional, and health services to people in the sex industry — these pieces daringly experiment with form, genre, and perspective. In these pages, you’ll find two “chickens” discussing their dreams while blowing up a condom; pieces on the dynamics of domme-ing and servicing second-hand hearts; essays on the importance of activism and its obstacles; short fiction exploring fantasies of violent liberation; tender letters to loved ones and younger selves that reflect on their journeys and how far they’ve come.

The Missing Anthology re-centres sex workers’ voices from the margins, bringing them into the conversation about an industry often treated as illicit and taboo. By doing so, it aims to address issues of inequality, social and economic mobility, stigmatization, and safety that are fuelled by misconceptions about sex workers and their profession.
