Summary

Kristina Bekenova presents a collection of interviews with fifteen African emerging leaders, young scholars and researchers, musicians, poets, artists, doctors, philanthropists, environmentalists, defenders of animal rights, tour operators, and treasurers of traditional culture, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Nigeria, Malawi, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Africa, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe. These interviews are an important, effective, and efficient way to make Africa’s authentic voices heard. The interviewees explain what Africa needs most, what they are doing about it, what vision for Africa they have, and how they think their ideas can be implemented. They share genuine African bottom-up perspectives, voice their understanding of African natural and cultural issues, identify Africa’s true needs, and formulate recommendations from an original African perspective. This book presents a unique opportunity to hear their message and to think more carefully about how we can help Africa along its developmental path.

Most managers understand the importance of giving their employees recognition and rewards, but when it comes to actually doing so, they often come up empty or use outdated, ineffective strategies. 151 Quick Ideas to Recognize and Reward Employees will help managers stock up. Recognition and rewards are consistently found to be among the most powerful of all motivators for employees at any job level. In fact, when employees are asked to describe their most satisfying experiences at work, they frequently mention situations in which they received recognition and rewards for their performance. And, importantly, when managers are skilled in providing this type of feedback, their employees typically reward them with increased productivity, commitment, and overall performance. However, just like customers who always order the same old entree at a restaurant, managers tend to choose the same old kinds of recognition and rewards. Some traditional rewards still work well, of course, but there is always room for new ideas.151 Quick Ideas to Recognize and Reward Employees offers you the full menu of recognition and reward strategies. It comes with detailed descriptions of the most popular ideas in business, plus others that are destined to become classics. Ideas such as:— Enriching jobs by giving employees more autonomy and decision-making responsibilities.— Purchasing personally signed books suited to the potential you see in eachemployee.— Awarding special coupons for free gasoline or transportation.— Hiring a masseuse to rub out stiff necks and backs.— Making your employees more invested by offering profit-sharing.— Plus many free or low-cost rewards.Included with each of the 151 strategies is an “assignment” that you can use as a roadmap to bring the idea to life.

Marco Rubio's parents came to the United States in 1956. The country they found was truly a land of opportunity, where hardworking people with grade school educations could afford a home, a car, and college for their kids. A country where maids and bartenders could raise doctors, lawyers, small-business owners, and maybe even a U.S. senator. That was the American Dream-our country's central promise to its people: If you work hard and play by the rules, you'll find tremendous opportunities and an even better life for your children. Rubio wrote this book because we stand at a critical juncture. What kind of country are we going to be? Will we surrender to Obamacare and other laws that crush innovation and entrepreneurship? Will we accept a powerful nanny state and the erosion of family values? Will we allow politics to kill the American Dream? Or will we rise to the challenge-and take back our legacy as the only nation on earth that offers unrestricted opportunity to all?In this book you'll meet an over-regulated small-businessman, a struggling single mother, an out-of-work and in-debt college graduate, and others who want nothing more than their own shot at the American Dream. Their stories are our stories; their challenges are our challenges.Of course no book or politician can single-handedly restore the American Dream. But a movement, working to promote the values and can-do spirit that made our country exceptional, can turn everything around.

The Fearless Organization offers practical guidance for teams and organizations who are serious about success in the modern economy. With so much riding on innovation, creativity, and spark, it is essential to attract and retain quality talent - but what good does this talent do if no one is able to speak their mind? The traditional culture of "fitting in" and "going along" spells doom in the knowledge economy. Success requires a continuous influx of new ideas, new challenges, and critical thought, and the interpersonal climate must not suppress, silence, ridicule, or intimidate. Not every idea is good, and yes, there are stupid questions, and yes, dissent can slow things down, but talking through these things is an essential part of the creative process. People must be allowed to voice half-finished thoughts, ask questions from left field, and brainstorm out loud; it creates a culture in which a minor flub or momentary lapse is no big deal and where actual mistakes are owned and corrected, and where the next left-field idea could be the next big thing. This audiobook explores this culture of psychological safety and provides a blueprint for bringing it to life. The road is sometimes bumpy, but succinct and informative scenario-based explanations provide a clear path forward to constant learning and healthy innovation.
