From the first chapter: "History is a story, a story of things that happened to real live people in our England years ago; and the things that are happening here and now, and that are put in the newspapers, will be history for little children one of these days. And the people you read about in history were real live people, who were good and bad, and glad and sorry, just as people are now-a-days."E. Nesbit writes about some of the people behind the names, dates and battles of English History in this lovely book for older children. The original book contains some beautiful illustrations and you can see those by clicking the 'Gutenberg' link below. Summary by Cori Samuel.

The house breathes. The house contains bodies and secrets. The house is visited by ghosts, by angels that line the roof like insects, and by saints that burn the bedsheets with their haloes.

It was built by a smalltime hustler as a means of controlling his wife, and even after so many years, their daughter and her granddaughter can't leave. They may be witches or they may just be angry, but when the mysterious disappearance of a young boy draws unwanted attention, the two isolated women, already subjects of public scorn, combine forces with the spirits that haunt them in pursuit of something that resembles justice.

In this lush translation by Sophie Hughes and Annie McDermott, Layla Martinez's eerie debut novel is class-conscious horror that drags generations of monsters into the sun. Described by Mariana Enriquez as "a house of women and shadows, built from poetry and revenge," this vision of a broken family in our unjust world places power in the hands of the eccentric, the radical, and the desperate.

In the fractured city of Aethelburg, a rigid order of light-wielders, the Lumina, reigns from gleaming spires while crushing the shadow-wielding Umbral in the grimy warrens below. For Molly White, an orphan of the dark, survival is a daily battle fought with forbidden power. For Argent Guard Captain Dylan Hodges, she is a heretic to be purged. They are enemies, bound by a history of hatred and a thousand-year-old lie.
But when a magical explosion leaves Dylan tainted by the very shadow-magic he despises, his world of black and white shatters. He can suddenly see both Lux and Nox—the light and the darkness—and with this terrible new sight comes a horrifying revelation. A fanatical leader is preparing a "purification" ritual that won't cleanse the city, but annihilate it. An ancient prophecy speaks of a Fulcrum, a power to unite both forces, and it points not to one savior, but to two mortal enemies.
To save their city, Molly and Dylan must forge an impossible alliance. Plunged into a desperate race against time, they are hunted by Dylan’s own father and a legion of zealots. Their only hope lies in mastering their combined powers and confronting a catastrophic storm of uncontrolled magic that was once Molly’s dearest friend. They must become the balance their world has forgotten, or be the final witnesses to its oblivion.

Dorothy Kathleen Broster was born on 2nd September 1877 at Devon Lodge in Grassendale Park, Garston, Liverpool.

At 16, the family moved to Cheltenham, where she attended Cheltenham Ladies' College and then on to St Hilda’s College, Oxford to read history, where she was one of the first female students, although at this time women were not awarded degrees.

Broster served as secretary to Charles Harding Firth, a Professor of History for several years, and collaborated on several of his works. Her first two novels were co-written with a college friend, Gertrude Winifred Taylor.

With the Great War interrupting her literary ambitions she served as a Red Cross nurse at a Franco-American hospital, but returned to England with a knee infection in 1916.

After the war, she moved near to Battle in East Sussex and took up writing full-time.

In 1920 she at last received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Oxford.

Her novels, mainly historical fiction, peaked in popularity with ‘The Flight of the Heron’, in 1925, a best-seller followed up by two sequels.

As well as poetry and various articles she also wrote several short stories, the best known of which is a classic of weird fiction ‘The Couching at the Door’ in which an artist appears to be haunted by a mysterious entity.

An intensely private individual many readers deduced from her name that she was both a man and Scottish.

D K Broster died in Bexhill Hospital on 7th February 1950. She was 73.
