Sinopse

“An expansive, transformative, and empowering book [that] shares the history of the witch, her magick, and persecution with reverence and respect . . . You will come to understand the witch and her world in a way that feels personal and inviting.” —Gabriela Herstik, author of Bewitching the Elements and Inner Witch   Traveling through cities and sites across Italy, France, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Kristen J. Sollée explores the places and people significant to the early modern legacy of the witch.    Between the 15th and 17th centuries, a confluence of political, economic, and religious factors ignited a wildfire of witch hysteria in Europe and, later, in parts of America. At the heart of these witch hunts were often dangerous misconceptions about femininity and female sexuality, and women were disproportionately punished as a result. Today, this lineage of oppression remains a vital reference point in the fight for women’s rights—and human rights—in the Western world and beyond.   By infusing an adventurous first-person narrative with extensive research and moments of imaginative historical fiction, Sollée makes an often-overlooked period of history come alive. Written for armchair travelers and on-the-ground explorers alike, Witch Huntnot only uncovers the horrors of history but also reveals how the archetype of the witch has been rehabilitated. For witches are not just haunting figures of the past; the witch is also a liberatory icon and identity of the present.           In this paperback edition, the author has included a new afterword and updated the travel resources section.

Stealing My Religion - Not Just...

We think we know cultural appropriation when we see it. Blackface or Native American headdresses as Halloween costumes—these clearly give offense. But what about Cardi B posing as the Hindu goddess Durga in a Reebok ad, AA's twelve-step invocation of God, or the earnest namaste you utter at the end of yoga class?

Liz Bucar unpacks the ethical dilemmas of a messy form of cultural appropriation: the borrowing of religious doctrines, rituals, and dress for political, economic, and therapeutic reasons. Does borrowing from another's religion harm believers? Bucar sees religion as an especially vexing arena for appropriation debates because faiths overlap and imitate each other and because diversity within religious groups scrambles our sense of who is an insider and who is not.

Stealing My Religion guides us through three revealing case studies—the hijab as a feminist signal of Muslim allyship, a study abroad "pilgrimage" on the Camino de Santiago, and the commodification of yoga in the West. Reflecting on her own missteps, Bucar comes to a surprising conclusion: the way to avoid religious appropriation isn't to borrow less but to borrow more—to become deeply invested in learning the roots and diverse meanings of our enthusiasms.

In history’s vast tapestry of conflict, the narratives of women have often been sidelined, their bravery and sacrifices overshadowed by those of their male counterparts. Yet, time and again, women have risen to the call of duty, demonstrating unwavering courage, unparalleled resilience, and an unbreakable spirit in the face of war. This second volume of *Women of War* continues to illuminate the stories of extraordinary women whose lives were shaped by battle, yet who each, in their unique way, shaped the course of history.
In these pages, we journey across centuries and continents to meet five remarkable women. Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl whose diary from hiding during the Holocaust gave the world a powerful testament to the horrors of war and the resilience of the human spirit. Florence Nightingale, the "Lady with the Lamp," whose pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War not only saved lives but transformed modern medicine. Nakano Takeko, the fierce samurai warrior of Japan, who led her own battalion in defense of her homeland during the Boshin War. Lyudmila Pavlichenko, the Soviet sniper whose deadly accuracy made her one of the deadliest women in World War II. And Lagertha, the legendary Viking shieldmaiden, whose tales of valor continue to inspire even today.
Through their stories, we witness different facets of war—its brutality, its challenges, and its profound impact on those who live through it. Yet, more importantly, we see how each of these women, in their own right, defied the limitations imposed upon them by society, wielding weapons, words, or wisdom to carve out their place in history.
As we delve into the lives of these heroines, may we find inspiration in their strength and courage, and a renewed understanding of the vital roles women have played—and continue to play—in the theaters of war.

From the essential chronicler of the world economy, a portrait of the Great Powers in transition.

The world’s two great economic powers are on opposite trajectories. In the United States, decades of neoliberal policies produced a small class of rich elites and gutted the middle class. In China, the same global forces have created a massive new upper class. The result is the greatest reshuffling of global incomes since the Industrial Revolution—a dramatic shakeup of each country’s political order. As the two powers retreat from one another, the implications for their futures, and for the world economy, are uncertain.

In The Great Global Transformation, acclaimed economist Branko Milanovic draws on original research to chart how these seismic shifts will shape the next century of the global economy. As both the US and China retreat into protectionism, Milanovic shows how a new and multipolar world order will follow—and how rising nationalism will have dramatically different effects on the two countries. And he shows us the fight ahead: as plutocracy returns, global war threatens, and a new system silently shapes our nations, driving populist discontent to the breaking point.

A worthy successor to Capitalism, Alone and his other landmark works, Milanovic’s new book announces the arrival of a new era he terms “national market liberalism,” in which liberalism survives in domestic economies, but not necessarily in the social arena. The Great Global Transformation is Milanovic’s indispensable account of the new twenty-first century now underway.

Thanks to his rise in the military and politics, Crassus’s renown and riches heavily influenced his contemporaries. In the wake of the Third Servile War, Crassus’ patronage helped position Caesar to be appointed governor of Hispania Ulterior. In order to maintain political office, which made him immune from prosecution for his debts, he left for modern day Spain before his praetorship expired. Caesar made this move knowing that governors were immune from prosecution, but governors also had vitally important military responsibilities via command of whatever legions were garrisoned in their territory. It would be as governor that Caesar’s military career truly took off, starting with his victories over a couple of local tribes. These military successes earned him the title Imperator, the Roman equivalent of the title of Commander.
Likewise, Caesar was heavily sponsored in his run for Consul by Crassus, and in a brilliant stroke of diplomacy, he succeeded in reconciling Crassus with Pompey, who was Rome’s most powerful general at the time. Alongside Pompey and Caesar, Crassus established the First Triumvirate, with Crassus supplying the funds, Pompey the muscle, and Caesar the political clout necessary for governing the city. Though later triumvirates officially wielded power, like the Second Triumvirate (which formed in the wake of Caesar’s assassination and included his heir Augustus and longtime general Mark Antony), this First Triumvirate acted behind the scenes to run Rome unofficially.
The triumvirate would come to an end when Crassus met a sudden and unexpected end while campaigning in the east against the Parthians. Ironically, his failed campaign is better remembered than the rest of his life because of the way his reputation brought about his manner of death: ancient writers claimed that shortly after he was killed in fighting, the Parthians poured molten gold down his throat and then used his head as a prop in a play.
