Summary

Picture the dawn breaking at a staggering 7,000 °F—intense enough to liquefy concrete, obliterate shadows, and rewrite the course of history before the day even begins.

Legacy of Hibakusha immerses you in that fateful morning, tracing the journeys of those who transformed devastation into powerful missions for peace, legal triumphs, and grassroots movements that unfolded in playgrounds. Prepare to navigate through the chaos of raging infernos, makeshift medical facilities, international diplomacy halls, and the rapid-fire world of social media where the younger generation shares their hard-earned insights in mere moments. Every chapter unfolds like a gripping tale: the hidden wounds that linger, the intricate dance of ideology, the haunting remorse of the observer in the shadows, the delicate origami that captured the world’s attention.

What compels you to dive into the pages of a book? Every agreement, every cent spent, and every urgent news bulletin about rising tensions can be traced back to these narratives. Discover the chilling tale of a pocket watch frozen at 8:15 that reshaped global legislation, the haunting stories of seamstresses whose scars ignited Japan’s resurgence, and the subtle yet powerful vow of “never again” that sparked an international financial boycott against arms manufacturers. By the final chapter, you won’t merely understand the events—you’ll sense the tension vibrating through your very veins. And yes, you’ll uncover essential strategies: formulate a compelling peace petition, unravel complex terminology at social gatherings, navigate any unsettling news cycle while maintaining your compassion.

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o was a towering figure in African literature, and his novels A Grain of Wheat; Weep Not, Child; and Petals of Blood are modern classics. Emerging from a literary scene that flourished in the 1950s and '60s during the last years of colonialism in Africa, he became known not just as a novelist—one who, in the late '70s, famously stopped writing novels in English and turned to the language he grew up speaking, Gĩkũyũ—but as a major postcolonial theorist.

In Decolonizing Language and Other Revolutionary Ideas, Ngũgĩ gives us a series of essays that build on the revolutionary ideas about language and its constructive role in national culture, history, and identity that he set out in his earlier work.

Intricate and deeply nuanced, this collection examines the enduring power of African languages in resisting both the psychic and material impacts of colonialism, past and present.

A brave call for discourse and immensely relevant to our present moment, Decolonizing Language and Other Revolutionary Ideas works both as a wonderful introduction to the enduring themes of Ngũgĩ's work as well as a vital addition to the library of the world's greatest and most provocative writers.

Jnana Yoga, often referred to as the "Path of Knowledge," is one of the four primary paths of yoga in the ancient tradition of Vedanta. The word “Jnana” comes from the Sanskrit root “jñā,” meaning knowledge, and Jnana Yoga is specifically concerned with the cultivation of wisdom and the realization of the ultimate truth of existence. Unlike the more physical paths like Hatha Yoga, Jnana Yoga focuses on intellectual discernment and meditation as tools to break through the illusion of the material world and achieve spiritual enlightenment.
At the heart of Jnana Yoga lies the pursuit of self-inquiry and the question, "Who am I?" This path asserts that ultimate knowledge, or liberation (moksha), can only be attained by understanding the true nature of oneself, and by discerning the difference between the transient, material world (Maya) and the eternal reality (Brahman). Jnana Yoga emphasizes the principle of non-duality, or Advaita, which teaches that the individual self (Atman) is ultimately one with the divine (Brahman). This realization dispels the illusion of separation between the self and the universe.
The path of Jnana Yoga is often described as a mental discipline that requires intense study, reflection, and meditation. It is traditionally taught by a guru, or spiritual teacher, who guides the seeker in their quest for self-knowledge. The guru's role is to help the student distinguish between the real and the unreal, encouraging them to look beyond their attachments, desires, and egos. Scriptures like the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and other Vedantic texts are central to Jnana Yoga, providing the philosophical foundation for its practices.

An American soldier vividly recounts leading a platoon through the most chaotic and significant year of the Vietnam War.In 1968, 1st Lieutenant Robin Bartlett was reassigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). He suddenly found himself at the “repo-depo” in Bien Hoa. His unit had more helicopter support than any other in Vietnam. That meant immediate support was only minutes away. But It also meant that Bartlett’s platoon could deploy at a moment’s notice. And they did.It was the worst of times to be a platoon leader in Vietnam, let alone a grunt serving in a combat unit. Beyond the brutality of combat, Bartlett faced a crisis of commitment as the war rapidly lost support both at home and among the soldiers he led. Fifty years later, Bartlett shares these harrowing experiences in a fast-moving, first-person narrative that shines a light on the horror, fear, anguish, and sometimes illogical humor of that war.Finalist, 2023 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Awards

No Friday Night Lights is the story of a rural Nevada high school football team that never wins. Veteran reporter John M. Glionna examines the 2022 season in which the McDermitt Bulldogs practiced for weeks in the summer only to learn once again that they had come up short of the necessary players due to the dwindling population on the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation on the Nevada-Oregon border.

Eight-man football helps give the coaches and kids a sense of community—despite a lack of wins, and despite their home's status as one of the most remote locations for a public school in the West. Glionna's relationships with coaches, players, parents—and even those McDermitt residents remotely connected to high school football—provide telling insights into local lives, many of them from the Paiute and Shoshone tribes of Fort McDermitt. Although victory and recognition elude the players, Glionna illuminates their hard work and dedication—leaving the listener with glimpses of life on the ground in "flyover" country.
