Sinopse

Salammbo is a historical novel by Gustave Flaubert. It is set in Carthage during the 3rd century BC, immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt which took place shortly after the First Punic War. Flaubert's main source was Book I of Polybius's Histories. It was not a particularly well-studied period of history and required a great deal of work from the author, who enthusiastically left behind the realism of his masterpiece Madame Bovary for this tale of blood and thunder.

After the First Punic War, Carthage is unable to fulfill promises made to its army of mercenaries, and finds itself under attack. The fictional title character, a priestess and the daughter of Hamilcar Barca, an aristocratic Carthaginian general, is the object of the obsessive lust of Matho, a leader of the mercenaries. With the help of the scheming freed slave, Spendius, Matho steals the sacred veil of Carthage, the Zaïmph, prompting Salammbô to enter the mercenaries' camp in an attempt to steal it back. The Zaïmph is an ornate bejewelled veil draped about the statue of the goddess Tanit in the sanctum sanctorum of her temple: the veil is the city's guardian and touching it will bring death to the perpetrator.

Love is messy. Love is hard, and it can make us do crazy things, including walking away from the love of your life.It took everything I had to build my life again, even if there was always a shadow of Jeremy Archer in my mind.
We had the time of our lives, wrapped up in the perfect summer before we finished school. All my hopes and dreams were laid before me, I simply needed to trust my heart and let myself fall. And I did.
But our love was young, and without realizing, we fell into something obsessive and toxic, and it crushed what we had, and took a part of me with it.
The years slipped by without him, and I thought I'd put my memories and fears surrounding him to rest. But seeing him again proved me wrong. I should have known better, but he was my biggest weakness.
I couldn't walk away from my second chance. Even after all this time. Even after everything.

    Contains mature themes.

James Hargrove is a math teacher who loves order, formulas, and the neat precision of his classroom. But when summer break arrives, James finds himself adrift in time and space, far from the structured world of equations he knows so well. Meanwhile, his wife Mei—a Chinese teacher with a love for poetry and pandas—embraces the season with passion, spending her days at the zoo, marveling at the simplicity and charm of her favorite black-and-white creatures.
In a dusty attic, James stumbles upon an old typewriter and unexpectedly discovers a new passion—writing. What begins as a whimsical hobby quickly evolves into The Algebraic Adventures of Archimedes Jones, a tale of a mathematician-turned-adventurer who uses his knowledge of equations to navigate magical worlds. As James pours his heart into creating realms where logic meets fantasy, he learns to let go of the rigid rules that once defined him, and to embrace the joy of imagination.
Mei becomes his greatest supporter, offering encouragement, inspiration, and plenty of suggestions—like adding a panda who knows calculus. Through their contrasting interests and shared love for each other’s passions, James and Mei discover new depths in their relationship. As his stories gain a small but devoted following, James learns that storytelling can be as powerful as teaching, and that sometimes, the most meaningful mysteries are those that can’t be solved with numbers alone.
Filled with warmth, humor, and a touch of romance, The Algebraic Adventures of Archimedes Jones is a heartwarming story about finding magic in the mundane, the beauty of contrasts, and the joy of embracing life’s unexpected adventures. It’s perfect for readers who believe that there’s room for whimsy in even the most practical lives, and that sometimes, the most profound equations are written not in chalk, but in love and laughter.

Jerome Black wakes with an iron bar in his hand and no memory of how it got there. By noon, a young woman is dead in an alley, and police are hunting a figure witnesses describe as a “blue man.” The newspapers treat the claim as a joke. Black does not.
At first he tells himself it is coincidence. A dream, nothing more. But the pattern continues. Each morning brings exhaustion, dread, and another headline. Each night steals more from him. He begins setting traps around his bed, determined to catch himself in the act. The traps are undone before sunrise. When he finally remembers what happens after dark, the fear that once ruled him turns into something worse — anticipation. The city tightens its watch. Patrols increase. A decoy walks alone under streetlights. The hunter runs straight into it.
Curse of the Blue Man is a tense psychological descent into divided identity and unstoppable impulse. It moves quickly, but the horror is intimate. The most dangerous thing in this story is not a creature in the shadows. It is the possibility that you may wake up and discover you were the shadow all along.
Lawrence M. Jannifer (often published as Laurence M. Janifer) built a wide-ranging career in science fiction and fantasy during the 1950s and 1960s. He wrote both short fiction and novels, contributed to magazines such as Amazing Stories and Fantastic, and collaborated frequently with Randall Garrett under the joint pseudonym “Mark Phillips” on the Psi-Power series, including Brain Twister and The Impossibles. Janifer was known for blending psychological tension with speculative ideas, and Curse of the Blue Man stands out as one of his darker explorations of transformation and identity.

One of the iconic characters of all Russian literature, Grigori Aleksandrovich Pechorin is the ultimate “superfluous man.” An aristocratic rake who loves the game of manipulating the lives of those around him, he callously kidnaps a Chechen teenager to be his bride, wagers the life of an inveterate gambler in a kind of philosophical Russian roulette, and engages in dangerous games with Crimean smugglers. “A Hero of Our Time” is really a collection of stories rather than a novel, culminating in the brilliant psychological novella “Princess Mary,” in which Pechorin toys tragically with the loves of two fragile women and sacrifices the life of his own friend for the sake of his own sociopathic amusement. In the process, he dissects his own motives with a kind of ruthless, surgical precision through which occasionally we see the human soul of a man in agony, who might not really want to be what he has become and who grieves over the loss of his own capacity for love and compassion. - Summary by Expatriate
