Sinopse

"Japan's Feudal Saga" presents a masterful exploration of Japan's transformation from a land of warring clans to a sophisticated feudal society spanning eight centuries. The book uniquely demonstrates how Japan's feudal system differed from European models by simultaneously nurturing military excellence and cultural refinement, creating a distinctive social framework that would influence Japan well into the modern era.

Through a chronological journey beginning with the 12th-century decline of imperial authority, the narrative examines three crucial developments:- the samurai's evolution from provincial warriors to refined aristocrats- the establishment of the shogunate's parallel power structure- the emergence of uniquely Japanese cultural practices

The book draws upon previously unexplored Western scholarship, including translated medieval documents, temple records, and recent archaeological findings from castle sites, providing readers with fresh insights into daily life across all social classes. The text progresses from the Gempei War through the cultural flowering of the Ashikaga period, the tumultuous Warring States era, and the strictly ordered Tokugawa period, concluding with the Meiji Restoration.

By interweaving military history, economic development, religious studies, and architectural evolution, the book reveals how Japan's feudal system created a unique cultural synthesis that continues to influence modern Japanese society. This comprehensive approach, supported by specific examples and case studies, makes complex historical concepts accessible to both academic researchers and general history enthusiasts.

Given that Lewis and Clark remain so famous, it was inevitable that the other American explorers would be overlooked, particularly William Eaton, the hero of the Battle of Derna in the Barnaby Wars, and Zebulon Montgomery Pike, the explorer of the Mississippi. In the case of Pike, Orsi suggests that the explorer is overlooked and in some cases slighted due to what the expeditions did and did not accomplish. Eaton and Pike represented “the first wave of Manifest Destiny, expanding the republican principles of liberty and citizenship in the world.”[1]
Contrasted to that patriotic sentiment are caveats and questions. The career of Zebulon Pike was “dominated by ambiguously motivated explorations of the American West.”[2] With the procurement of the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the nation, Pike had the full force of American authority at his disposal, and his travels through the Colorado Rockies into New Mexico pushed the boundaries between America and Spain. Captured by Spanish officials for illegal entry, he was finally released back into American custody after a year’s time with a volume of new information on Spanish territory, its economy, and its military configuration. This sparked a debate about whether the capture was planned by the American government itself.
Pike’s return is still debated, as is his relationship with General James Wilkinson and Aaron Burr. The controversy is relevant to Burr’s alleged conspiracy to establish a competing empire in the American Southwest, or perhaps as a way of conquering Spanish America without involving the White House. Pike’s papers, confiscated by the Spanish, have complicated the search for the truth, and any evidence of his complicity remains confidential, in part because of the unpredictable explorer’s unpredictable demise.

Bill Morneau’s experience as Canada’s finance minister crystalized his vision for the country’s potential for growth and prosperity. Where To from Here looks backward with coolness and candor and forward with a fresh vision of all that Canada can — and must — become.

Much of the world reacted with surprise and admiration to the results of the 2015 Canadian federal election and the makeup of the government it produced. Led by a young charismatic leader with a storied family legacy on Parliament Hill, the Liberal government scored a historic victory, rising from third-party status to substantial majority. With a gender-equal cabinet and an ambitious agenda, it heralded a new approach to the country’s federal politics.

After an exciting and productive five years spent focused on domestic and global issues, Finance Minister Bill Morneau decided to take his leave from the same government. What prompted him to abandon one of the most powerful political offices in the country? How much of his decision was based on the often brutal give-and-take of politics? When did the penny drop, persuading one of Trudeau’s brightest lights to shift his talents and energies elsewhere?

In his own persuasive voice, Bill Morneau paints a positive picture, tracing his widely lauded entry into the political arena, the arc of his career in politics, major accomplishments and missed opportunities, his surprising exit, and a host of revealing episodes between the events. Told with measures of both pride and regret, he explores personalities, achievements, and failures with candor.

Morneau’s experience crystalized his vision for Canada and its potential for growth and prosperity. He shares a vision clearly and provocatively expressed, drafting a blueprint for the country’s future. Where To from Here looks backward with coolness and candor and forward with a fresh vision of all that Canada can — and must — become.

"The Comanche Perspective" illuminates one of the most infamous events in early Texas history—the Council House Fight. Traditionally portrayed through a narrow, one-sided lens, this book challenges the conventional narrative by exploring the complex web of cultural misunderstandings and mounting tensions between the Penateka Comanche and the Texians. Drawing on diverse perspectives and in-depth research, it reveals how mutual distrust and hostility led to the tragic clash on March 19, 1840. By shedding light on the shared responsibilities and deep-seated grievances that fueled this violent encounter, "The Comanche Perspective" provides a fresh and balanced understanding of a crucial moment in the history of the American frontier.

Teach for Climate Justice - A...

In Teach for Climate Justice, accomplished educator and social and emotional learning expert Tom Roderick proposes a visionary interdisciplinary and intersectional approach to PreK–12 climate education. He argues that meaningful instruction on this urgent issue of our time must focus on climate justice—the convergence of climate change and social justice—in a way that is emotionally safe, developmentally appropriate, and ultimately empowering.

Drawing on examples of real-life educators teaching climate change, Roderick identifies eight key dimensions of climate education that will prepare students to face the challenges of the climate crisis and give them the means to take action. These dimensions include not only educating for a deep understanding of the scientific, geopolitical, and socioeconomic equity issues that surround global warming, but also cultivating appreciation for the environment, building a supportive community, and fostering active hope for the future. In support of this crucial endeavor, Roderick suggests evidence-based teaching strategies, practices that promote inclusivity, and tools for social and emotional learning.

This timely and uplifting book lays out a powerful vision for teaching, learning, and curriculum development to nurture a generation of courageous, informed advocates for climate justice.
