Growing up in the Bronx, Jose Maldonado thought he had life figured out. Between childhood games and family bonds, everything seemed simple enough. But as he got older, questions started creeping in. Why do people suffer? What's the point of it all? Before long, confusion turned to anger, and anger turned to a desperate search for something real. In ‘My Walk with the Lord,’ Jose takes you through his powerful journey from emptiness to faith. This isn't your typical feel-good spiritual book. It's the real story of a man who hit rock bottom, questioned everything he believed, and found himself in places he never expected to be. From unfulfilling relationships to nights spent in jail, from watching too many funerals to that life-changing moment in Connecticut when everything shifted, Maldonado shows you what it actually looks like to wrestle with doubt, to feel abandoned, and to slowly discover that maybe, just maybe, there’s something bigger than yourself calling your name. This book is dedicated to Jose’s son, his family, and every soul searching for truth. He prays from the depths of his heart that readers will come to know there is something beyond this life. If you take nothing else from this book, let it be this: follow the Lord, build your own relationship with Him, and receive salvation. ‘My Walk with the Lord’ will meet you right where you are and walk with you from there.

Urchin at War - The Tale of a...

What was it like to grow up as an urban urchin under bombs in Nazi Germany? Did he have a real childhood? Did he play pranks on grownups, as young rascals do in normal times? Could he be shielded against Nationalist ideology? In Urchin at War, Uwe Siemon-Netto answers these questions in the affirmative with humour and drama.

The son of a lawyer blinded in World War I, he describes the parallel universe in which his bourgeois family lived in Leipzig. He vividly writes about the night when his home was bombed out. He had to guide his father over puddles of green flames caused by phosphor to his grandmother's apartment where he discovered hours later that — of all people — Frenchmen had rescued his mother from the flames. He tells the story of how he stole a tram after an air raid, and how his family buried his grand-aunt's right hand because that was the only body part rescuers found under the rubble after her house was hit by a blockbuster bomb.

Dr. Siemon-Netto, a journalist and academic, relates how in a country parsonage he was evacuated to, the pro-Nazi pastor beat him up for using French loan words and how he preached on Sundays that Hitler was Germany's saviour, prompting the courageous organist to whisper into the author's ears: "He's lying! He is betraying our Lord!"

When the Americans occupied Leipzig on Hitler's birthday in 1945, the author's family feasted on half an egg in mustard sauce each.
Urchin at War is an Ode to Omi, his funny and intrepid grandmother Clara Netto, a grande dame who in the air raid shelter taught him basic Lutheran doctrine so well that it led him to interrupt his stellar career as a reporter at age 50 to study theology in Chicago and earn a doctorate in Boston.
Urchin at War is the first volume in the 1517 Publishing's Urchin Series about the  extraordinary life story of a kid and high school dropout who became a sought-after newsman, who covered the Kennedy assassination and the Vietnam War, and ended up being a Lutheran lay theologian.

A rich and vivid history of Britain's second city through the people who made it
‘What Manchester thinks today, England thinks tomorrow.’
Long before Manchester gave the world titans of industry, comedy, music and sport, it was the cosmopolitan Roman fort of Mamucium. But it was as the ‘shock city’ of the Industrial Revolution that Manchester really made its mark on the world stage. A place built on hard work and innovation, it is no coincidence that the digital age began here too, with the world’s first stored-program computer, Baby.
A city as radical as it is revolutionary, Manchester has always been a political hotbed. The Peterloo Massacre is immortalised in British folklore and the city was a centre for pioneering movements such as Chartism. Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst hailed from here and the city still treasures its wilful independence.
Manchester’s spirited individuality has carried through into its artistic output too, bringing the world Anthony Burgess, L.S. Lowry, Jeanette Winterson, Joy Division and Oasis. Mention United or City almost anywhere and you’ll find fans, and opinions.
Until now, this magnificent city did not have its definitive history. From the author of the bestselling Northerners, this work of unrivalled authority and breadth tells the story of a changing place and its remarkable people.
In this autobiography of a city, Brian Groom delves into the historical and social aspects of Manchester, painting a vivid picture of its evolution from the 19th century to the 21st. The non-fiction work is a testament to the city's popular culture, its influence on Britain and Europe, and its significant contributions to science.
For fans of Rick Broadbent (Jessica Ennis), Tom Holland (The Rest is History), Simon Jenkins (The Celts), Andy Burnham (Head North), and Ian Mortimer (Medieval Horizons).
