Sinopse

The Conflicts of the Roses, also known as the Civil Wars, were a series of civil wars that took place in the mid-to-late fifteenth century in England. These wars were fought between supporters of two rival cadet lines of the royal House of Plantagenet: the Lancasters and the Yorks. The battles resulted in the elimination of the male lineages of both dynasties, leaving the Lancastrian claim to the Tudor bloodline. Eventually, the Tudor and York Houses merged to form a unified royal dynasty, putting an end to the rival claims.

The conflicts were sparked by various factors, including the aftermath of the Hundred Years' War, which brought socio-economic problems and weakened the prestige of the English monarchy. Additionally, structural issues with bastard feudalism and the powerful duchies created by Edward III contributed to the tensions.

The mental infirmity and weak rule of Henry VI reignited interest in Richard of York's claim to the throne, but historians are divided on which factor played the primary role in causing the conflicts.

A contemporary look at Albert Einstein's classic call for socialism

First published more than seventy-five years ago in the inaugural issue of Monthly Review: An Independent Socialist Magazine, Albert Einstein's "Why Socialism?" is an unheralded classic. Written during the McCarthyite witch-hunt in the United States, it constituted an act of defiance, making a case for socialism unrivaled in its time or ours. Yet, its very existence has been an embarrassment to an establishment which has continually sought to downplay the significance of his iconoclastic essay, together with Einstein's socialism itself.

This volume includes Einstein's essay along with a detailed commentary on his essay by Monthly Review editor, John Bellamy Foster. Foster's introduction tells the story of Einstein's life-long commitment to socialism and the events leading to the publication of "Why Socialism?" and contextualizes the importance of his essay as we enter a time of planetary crisis and new threats of world war. Over the three-quarters of century since its publication, "Why Socialism?" is one of those rare statements whose power has only grown, reaching untold numbers of readers over the years. It is of crucial importance that―for the sake of the future of humanity―Einstein's message continues to proliferate.

In Driving Lessons, Christopher B. Strain sets out on a quintessential American road trip, exploring not just the roads and byways of the country but the road trip's place in American culture. Strain dives into the well of American travel writing, illuminating fascinating aspects of the road trip, such as how race, class, and gender shape the experiences of road trippers.

In the summer of 1998, amid a professional crisis of confidence, Strain settled on a plan to reconnect with both himself and the country he studies. He purchased a 1972 Volkswagen Westfalia van and set off on his own cross-country odyssey. In the weeks that followed, he ruminated on his own ongoing journey alongside great journeys from the past and how they reveal the heart of the traveler as well as the landscape of the nation.

Visiting archives and landmarks across the United States, Strain's journey became a parallel to the stories he studied—an opportunity to see and experience the cities, national parks, and monuments that define United States history. Driving Lessons is a compelling blend of literary analysis and memoir, offering listeners an insightful and heartfelt reflection on the enduring power of the American road trip.

This book captures a journey marked by profound loss, boundless grace, surrender, and ultimate joy, all orchestrated by the guiding hand of God. Presented through a sincere compilation of narratives, stories, and poetry, Lanford invites readers into an inspiring exploration of his personal odyssey through the depths of grief following the passing of his wife of 42 years. Within these confessional, redemptive, and restorative writings lies a narrative of forgiveness, renewal, and the extravagant love of God.
Rather than a conventional guide on coping with grief, Lanford emphasizes to readers that this book aims to sensitize readers to God's relentless desire to love and pursue them through the darkest moments. Even those who have not experienced the loss of a spouse or a beloved can cultivate empathy and compassion for those navigating such spaces.
Lanford clarifies, "This isn't just a self-help manual; it's an exploration designed to stir the soul, encouraging contemplation of God and fostering an awareness that, in times of distress, God does not abandon us. His intention is to bring comfort and meet us precisely where we need Him the most."
When asked about the key takeaway for readers, Lanford expresses, "God epitomizes absolute love. He actively pursues us in our deepest grief and heartache, offering measured and sometimes overflowing mercy. He equips us with strength for each day and every ciucumstance."
