Sinopse

King Tutankhamun, commonly referred to as King Tut, served as an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, reigning at the close of the 18th Dynasty, around 1332–1323 BC in traditional chronology, during the New Kingdom of Egypt.

Akhenaten, identified through the discovery of his mummy in tomb KV55, is believed to be his father, while his mother, the mysterious mummy known as "The Younger Lady" in KV35, was determined through DNA testing to be his father's sister.
Ascending the throne at the tender age of eight or nine,Tutankhamun owed his kingship to the unparalleled viziership of his eventual successor, Ay, who may have had familial ties with him. He entered matrimony with Ankhesenamun, his paternal half-sister, and tragically lost two daughters during their union
—one in the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy and the other shortly after full-term birth.

The names Tutankhaten and Tutankhamun are thought to represent "Living image of Aten" and "Living image of Amun," respectively, as Amun took precedence after Akhenaten's demise. While some Egyptologists contest this translation, proposing alternatives like "The-life-of-Aten-is-pleasing" or "One-perfect-of-life-is-Aten."

In the 50 years following the First Crusade, the Latin states in the East were consolidated, but there were also growing tensions and new challenges. Against this backdrop, the fall of the County of Edessa in December 1144 at the hands of Zengi, the atabeg of Aleppo and Mosul, was a catastrophic event. Founded in 1098 by the future King Baldwin of Boulogne, Edessa was the first Crusader state, as well as the northernmost, weakest, and least populated. It was constantly exposed to Muslim attacks, and news of its fall reached Europe at the beginning of 1145, and the fall was the catalyst for the Second Crusade. Furthermore, the Crusader states were also concerned about their relationship with the Byzantine Empire. Relations with the Empire were often tense. As early as 1105, Bohemond of Antioch travelled to the West in search of troops to fight the Muslims while concealing his intention to attack parts of the Byzantine Empire. He reportedly obtained papal acquiescence, though not an explicit bull.
Historically, writers have given little prominence to the Second Crusade because of its failure, and it is understandably overshadowed by the triumphant First Crusade and the more captivating Third Crusade. For a long time, historiography attributed a central role to Bernard of Clairvaux, sometimes portraying him as the sole architect of the enterprise due to the political difficulties experienced by Pope Eugene III in Rome. However, more recent studies have re-evaluated the Pope's role, emphasizing his commitment to planning and coordinating the crusade through a network of legates and advisors. Contrary to the portrayal of him as a naïve monk, Eugene III had a profound grasp of the dynamics of crusading and the boundaries of Christendom, which informed his bull and overall strategy. Another historiographical issue concerns the scope of the crusade itself:

Before the Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod, what was happening in North America? Who was there? What civilizations rose and fell? For years, the answers to these questions have been shrouded in mystery.

At the time of European contact, a diverse world of Native peoples thrived across the continent. What was their backstory? Who were the ancestors of the Sioux? Where did the Navajo come from? What about the Apache, the Comanche, the Cherokee?

They Had Names is the result of a multi-year deep dive into genetics, indigenous histories, archaeology, and linguistics—an ambitious quest to uncover answers to these questions.

In this book, you will explore pre-Columbian links between civilizations of the Old World and civilizations of the New. You’ll read about unexpected connections between Mexico and tribes north of the Rio Grande. You’ll also discover that ancient ruins from North American civilizations still exist, that these ruins tell dramatic stories, and that they can still be visited today.

On this continent, peoples and kingdoms rose and fell, great battles were fought, heroes were enshrined—heroes whose names have been preserved.
