Sinopsis

In the realm of American cinema, Joan Crawford carved a significant legacy as a versatile actress. Her journey commenced in the world of dance within traveling theatrical troupes, eventually leading her to grace the Broadway stage in 1925. The turning point came when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer extended a film contract, propelling Crawford into the dynamic world of motion pictures.
However, Crawford, yearning for substantial roles, embarked on a robust self-promotion campaign.

The late 1920s witnessed her metamorphosis into a nationally acclaimed flapper, standing shoulder to shoulder with MGM counterparts Norma Shearer and Greta Garbo during the 1930s. Noteworthy for portraying diligent young women navigating the complexities of love and financial success, Crawford's on-screen narratives resonated deeply, particularly amid Depression-era audiences, predominantly women.

Basking in Hollywood's limelight, Crawford ascended to become one of the highest-paid women in the United States. Nevertheless, the tide turned as her films encountered financial setbacks, eventually earning her the unenviable epithet of "box office poison" by the close of the 1930s.

A spectacular resurgence marked Crawford's career with her role in "Mildred Pierce" (1945), culminating in the coveted Academy Award for Best Actress. Beyond her cinematic prowess, her life took an intriguing turn with marriage to Pepsi-Cola Company president Alfred Steele in 1955. Following his demise in 1959, Crawford assumed a role on the company's board of directors, a position she held until her departure in 1973.

Years after her successful and impactful career at the CIA, Christina Hillsberg became enthralled with the stories of the trailblazing women who forged new paths within the Agency long before she began her career there in the aughts. These were women who sacrificed their personal lives, risked their safety, defied expectations, and boldly navigated the male-dominated spy organization.

Through exclusive interviews with current and former female CIA officers, many of whom have never spoken publicly, Agents of Change tells an enthralling and, at times, disturbing story set against the backdrop of the evolving women's movement. It was the 1960s, a "secretarial" era, when women first gained a foothold and pushed against the one-dimensional, pop-culture trope of the sexy Cold War Bond Girl. Underestimated but undaunted, they fought their way, decade-by-decade, through adversity to the top of the spy game.

Seamlessly weaving together the individual stories of these exceptional women, Hillsberg deftly tackles not just the fight for gender equality at the CIA, but the current dilemma the Agency faces when dealing with the culmination of a decades-long culture of sexual harassment and assault.

Wildly funny musings from an eighty-three-year-old TikTok sensation.

“Understated” and “tasteful” could never be applied to Annie, and that’s just fine with her. A colorful actress with a decades-long career in TV, film, and theater—including a recurring role on Seinfeld and a center-stage spot touring with The Moth—Annie offers her trademark unabashed
takes on both everyday and typically taboo topics. Whether she’s sharing her thoughts on the miracle of childbirth (“It’s a miracle that anyone who’s been through it is willing to do it again”), religion (“William Shakespeare was not Jewish; no Jew could write a play called All’s Well That Ends
Well”), motherhood, or any other topic, Annie will have you laughing out loud.

Underlying the humor are poignant observations that feel particularly relevant today: the importance of kindness and consideration, how we’re all more alike than different, and the freedom to be found in self-acceptance. You’ll put down this book feeling not just lighter but inspired
by Annie’s wisdom and insight, gathered over eight decades.

A witty and charming account of the wildly entertaining Elsie de Wolfe in 1950s Hollywood, recounted by her dear friend, the beloved creator of Madeline.

Ludwig Bemelmans's charming intergenerational friendship with the late-in-life "First Lady of Interior Decoration" provides an enormously enjoyable nostalgia trip to the sun-soaked glamour of Los Angeles, where de Wolfe surrounded herself with classic movie stars and a luminous parade of life's oddities.

With hilarity and mischief that de Wolfe would no doubt approve, To the One I Love the Best lifts the curtain on 1950s Hollywood—a bygone world of extravagance and eccentricity, where the parties are held in circus tents and populated by movie stars.

Bemelmans, who was working at MGM, had originally come to the California home of de Wolfe just for cocktails, but by the end of the night, he was firmly established as a member of the family: given a bedroom in their sumptuous house, invitations to the most outrageous parties in Hollywood, and the friendship of the larger-than-life woman known to her closest friends simply as "Mother."

To the One I Love the Best is a touching tribute to a fabulously funny woman and an American icon.
