Sinopsis

Katherine Vega returns to Havenwood, the Appalachian town etched in her bones, not with nostalgia, but the grit of hard truths. The crisp mountain air now carries the metallic tang of coal dust, a constant reminder of the ravaged land and the insidious “scarcity myth” used to justify its exploitation.  Armed with a Ph.D. and a research grant, Katherine arrives for a reckoning, determined to dissect the lie that has choked communities like hers for generations.Havenwood isn’t just a research site; it’s a repository of memories. The creaking porch swing of her childhood home, nestled at the foot of a strip-mined mountain, evokes both comfort and unease. Reuniting with Desiree, a childhood friend battling Havenwood’s contaminated water crisis, stirs up old tensions and shared grief.  Desiree, a descendant of healers, clings fiercely to her family's legacy, fighting to reclaim both her heritage and her community’s health.Katherine’s research intertwines with Desiree’s struggle, revealing a disturbing pattern of environmental racism.  The predominantly Black neighborhoods bear the brunt of the pollution, their water poisoned while wealthier, whiter areas remain pristine.  She meets Morgan, a former high school star whose promise has been eroded by black lung, his bitterness towards the coal company—and his uncle, the corrupt Mayor Oliver—a volatile presence threatening to ignite.Katherine’s investigation exposes a deeper conspiracy. Federal funds meant for poverty alleviation are lining the pockets of officials, while Havenwood’s residents struggle to survive.  But within the corruption, a flicker of hope: a clandestine network of activists, led by Silas, Katherine’s childhood mentor and now a reclusive artist. Silas, with his deep knowledge of the mountains, becomes a crucial ally.As Katherine immerses herself, the lines between researcher and advocate blur. Anonymous threats escalate, the danger a constant hum beneath the surface.  Then, a discovery in the town hall archives: a suppressed report revealing the contamination is far worse than imagined, with potentially irreversible consequences. Fear wars with a newfound responsibility. She must expose the truth, but the risks are terrifyingly real.A lifeline appears in the form of Aimee, a forgotten childhood friend now a sharp environmental lawyer.  Together, they build their case, inspiring others to come forward. Desiree organizes protests, demanding clean water.  Morgan, witnessing the growing movement, channels his anger into activism, organizing the miners in a walkout that cripples the coal company. The climax arrives in a tense town hall confrontation. Katherine, armed with the report and backed by Aimee, exposes the mayor’s corruption.  The revelation sparks outrage, forcing his resignation and prompting a federal investigation.  The ending is not a fairytale, but a hard-won victory.  The fight for Havenwood’s future is far from over, but the community has found its voice, reclaiming its narrative.  Katherine, forever changed, stays in Havenwood, no longer a visitor, but a participant in its ongoing struggle. The scars on the mountain remain, symbols of damage but also of resilience. The air still carries coal dust, but now mingled with the fragrance of wildflowers, a fragile yet persistent sign of hope in the heart of Appalachia.

From a National Book Award finalist, an “entertaining and inspiring” biography of the heroic Gettysburg commander, college president, and governor of Maine (Senator George J. Mitchell).   This is a vivid account of the life of Joshua Chamberlain, whose is best known for leading a successful bayonet charge against a Confederate assault that was memorialized in the film Gettysburg—and earned Chamberlain the Medal of Honor. But his life was long and his military, political, and academic careers were filled with numerous notable accomplishments as well, among them the governorship of Maine and presidency of Bowdoin College, before his Civil War wounds finally caught up with him in 1914. This account, with illustrations included, tells his absorbing, wide-ranging story, explores his continuing mystique, and paints a vivid picture of late nineteenth-century New England.   “A worthy tribute to Chamberlain’s lasting legacy.” —Civil War Book Review “Joshua Chamberlain was much more than a war hero, and Pullen’s thoughtful book fills out the picture of his remarkable life.” —Senator George J. Mitchell   “Reveal[s] a complicated character, without diminishing the almost mythic status he has assumed.” —The Washington Times

Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and, to a smaller extent, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru, and Bolivia in the Central Andes have deep-rooted roots in the subsoil of their pre-Columbian civilizations. The first chapters of the history of Latin America correspond to those who inhabited it before their first contact with Europeans. This is especially true in Mesoamerica. The objectives here are to show the development of the peoples and high civilizations of Mesoamerica before the establishment of the Mexica (Aztecs) in the Valley of Mexico (1325); second, to examine the key features of the political and socio-economic organization, and the artistic and intellectual achievements achieved during the period of rule of the Mexica (Aztecs) in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; and, finally, present a vision of the prevailing situation in Mesoamerica, on the eve of the European invasion (1519), between the solid continental masses of North and South America, Mesoamerica (that is, the area where it developed with High culture difficulties, which, at the time of contact with the Spaniards, reached an area of about 900,000 km2), has a varied isthmic character, with various geographical features, such as the gulfs of Tehuantepec and Fonseca, on the Pacific Ocean coast, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Honduras.

A practical guide to help authors authentically write and edit a character whose identity is different than their own. Do you have the tools to authentically write and edit a character whose identity is different than your own? It’s not a subject that’s generally taught in creative writing programs, and there are so few craft books and online resources on the subject. Even if you can take a seminar, class, or workshop, there’s nothing like having an easy-to-understand book on hand to provide guidance and insight every time you craft characters with historically marginalized identities. In Writing an Identity Not Your Own, award-winning author Alex Temblador discusses one of the most contentious topics in creative writing: crafting a character whose identity is historically marginalized. What is “identity,” and how do unconscious biases and bias blocks impact and influence what we write? What is intersectionality? You’ll learn about identity terms, stereotypes, and tropes, and receive genre-specific advice related to various identities to consider when writing different races and ethnicities, sexual and romantic orientations, gender identities, disabilities, nationalities, and more. Through writing strategies, exercises, and literary excerpts, writers will gain a clearer understanding on how misrepresentations and harmful portrayals can appear in storylines, dialogue, and characterization. Alex will guide writers from the brainstorming phase through the editing process so they can gain a full understanding of the complexities of writing other identities and why it’s important to get them right.

"We need more writers with bite. We have lived in the flatlands too long," writes John Barnie in one of his 'observations' ('Art in the Flatlands'). And bite he delivers.

Ranging across politics, history, culture, ecological disaster, the meaning of truth, poetry, what we mean by identity and more… Barnie shares a window onto the world that is both erudite and particular. Leaning towards pessimism in a darkening world, these observations are often provocative, not from any bullish desire to antagonise, but as the result of mining a rationalist line of thought with an honesty and consistency that is applied as much to the author as to his subjects. There is a clarity here that some may find uncomfortable, but the aim is always dialogue above agreement; intellectual engagement above cheap solutions and sentimentality.

Barnie asks us to think, consider and dig deeper, but most of all he asks that we "…live richly among our secondary self-created meanings, while recognising them for what they are. To face without flinching the nullity of the great void." ('Varieties of Meaning')
Tsunami Days is a vital collection of essays for those prepared to engage with its unflinching observations.

While the book rests on the backbone of the Vietnam experience, it aspires to go beyond the confines of that particular war and lead the reader to question an American foreign policy that has, especially since 2001, been militarily driven. The harm done to American and allied soldiers and to the indigent peoples and societies of the countries the U.S. has so thoughtlessly invaded has secured no advantage to the U.S. or any other country. The author delves into the human physical and psychological cost of war and implicitly makes the case for diplomacy over force, restraint, and modesty over hubris. He establishes the importance of cause to the combatant's ability to fight winningly and to remain psychologically sound in battle and afterward. It is especially relevant today because it connects the human and societal consequences of the decisions made in and around that war with the recent squandered ventures in the Middle East.
