Colombia's economic transformation has been a complex and dynamic process shaped by historical events, political decisions, and global economic trends. From its early indigenous trade systems to its current standing as one of Latin America's largest economies, Colombia's journey has been marked by periods of growth, crisis, and resilience. Understanding this transformation requires a deep dive into the key factors that have influenced its economy over the centuries.
The foundation of Colombia's economy was laid long before Spanish colonization. Indigenous communities engaged in agriculture, trade, and resource management, establishing early economic structures. However, the arrival of the Spanish in the early 16th century drastically altered the economic landscape. The Spanish introduced a mercantilist system that prioritized resource extraction, particularly gold, and forced indigenous labor into exploitative economic activities. This period also saw the beginnings of agricultural exports, as crops like sugar and tobacco became integral to the colonial economy.
Following independence in 1810, Colombia faced significant economic instability. The transition from colonial rule to a sovereign state disrupted established trade networks and led to political fragmentation. Wars of independence had devastated infrastructure and financial systems, leaving the new republic struggling to establish a stable economy. The 19th century saw slow economic progress, with regional economies developing independently and a reliance on agriculture persisting. Coffee emerged as Colombia's most valuable export by the late 19th century, setting the stage for greater economic integration and growth.

The epic, page-turning history of how a group of physicists toppled the Newtonian universe in the early decades of the twentieth century
The epic true story of how a global team of physics luminaries—Einstein, Curie, Schrödinger, and more—toppled the Newtonian universe amid the turmoil of two World Wars

There may never be another era of science like the first half of the twentieth century, when many of the most important physicists ever to live—Marie Curie, Max Planck, Wolfgang Pauli, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Ernst Schrödinger, Albert Einstein, and others—came together to uncover the quantum world: a concept so outrageous and shocking, so contrary to traditional physics, that its own founders rebelled against it until the equations held up and fundamentally changed our understanding of reality.

In cinematic, page-turning chapters, Tobias Hürter takes us back to this uniquely momentous and harrowing time, when war and revolution upended the lives of his renegade scientists. As they crisscross Europe, Hürter reveals these brilliant thinkers anew, as friends and enemies, lovers and loners, and indeed, men and women just like us. Hürter compellingly casts quantum mechanics as a concept Too Big for a Single Mind—and its birth as a testament to the boundless potential of genius in collaboration.

John Stuart Mill, a British philosopher and political economist, remains one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century. Born in 1806, Mill was exposed to rigorous intellectual training from an early age, particularly through his father, James Mill, a prominent utilitarian philosopher. This early exposure shaped Mill's understanding of the world, leading him to become a key figure in the development of utilitarianism, a moral theory that evaluates actions based on their ability to promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.
Mill’s contribution to utilitarianism was both a continuation and a refinement of the ideas originally proposed by Jeremy Bentham, his intellectual predecessor. While Bentham’s version of utilitarianism focused primarily on the quantity of pleasure or pain produced by an action, Mill introduced a more nuanced view by distinguishing between higher and lower pleasures. According to Mill, pleasures of the intellect, imagination, and moral feelings were superior to those of mere physical satisfaction. This distinction between qualitative pleasures was central to Mill’s revision of utilitarian thought, emphasizing that the quality of happiness mattered as much as, if not more than, its quantity.
In this chapter, we explore the foundations of utilitarianism as laid out by Mill. He argued that the ultimate goal of human life is to achieve happiness, which can be defined as the presence of pleasure and the absence of pain. Mill believed that utilitarianism provided a clear and objective standard by which to judge actions, policies, and societal practices. The greatest happiness principle, which advocates for actions that maximize overall happiness, is a central tenet of Mill’s ethical framework. However, Mill also recognized the complexity of applying this principle in real-life situations, acknowledging the challenges of balancing individual rights with the greater good.
