Beschreibung

In "Homespun Tales," Kate Douglas Wiggin weaves a rich tapestry of narrative that captures the simplicity and charm of rural life in New England. Through a series of interconnected stories, Wiggin explores themes of family, community, and the everyday struggles and joys of her characters, all rendered in her distinctive, lyrical prose. The book reflects the literary movement of local color writing that emerged in the late 19th century, celebrating the distinctive social fabric and dialects of specific regions, while promoting a deep sense of nostalgia and belonging. Kate Douglas Wiggin, born in 1856, was a prominent author and social reformer, deeply influenced by the values of compassion and community that surrounded her in Maine. Besides her literary endeavors, her experiences as a founder of kindergartens and her advocacy for children's education uniquely informed her perspective, imbuing her tales with warmth and authenticity. Wiggin's passion for storytelling is not only a reflection of her love for her native New England but also echoes her commitment to social change through literature. "Homespun Tales" is a delightful read that invites readers into a world where simplicity reigns and profound truths emerge from ordinary lives. It is highly recommended for those who appreciate pastoral narratives and wish to explore the heart of American folk culture through a masterful storyteller's lens.

An irresistible slice of murder and mystery – there’s a killer on the loose in the Lake District, and the members of the Penrith Bingo Club have decided they’re the ones to catch the culprit…
Jason Brazel is an out of work journalist who lives in Penrith with his family and mother-in-law, Amita. She knows everyone and everything that’s going on in this corner of the Lakes.
So when it’s discovered that Madeline Frobisher, one of Amita’s fellow regulars at the bingo club has died, found by the postman outside her crumbling country home close to Ullswater Lake, she senses immediately this is no accident. The trouble is, no one else seems to take her suspicions seriously.

Emma Lawrence was one of those women who seemed to have everything her way: beauty, blarney, and an insatiable hunger for expansiveness. From an undistinguished background, she pieced together a life of affluence through her enchantresses of wealthy men and then moving on once they had served their purpose. Each relationship had been strategic in her relentless pursuit of money and status.
But when Emma meets Victor, a man whose charm and sophistication meet her own ambition, this carefully constructed world begins to unravel. It is his insinuations of even greater riches that set her on a course of deceit entailing investment of all she has, both financially and emotionally, into it, only to find out too late that she is played.
She is stripped of her money and marooned by the very man whom she held in trust. Now, Emma faces only one thing: the cold reality of her choices. And having no money, with no roof over her head, she returns to her old neighborhood, a place riddled with whispers and condemnation. She must now start life all over again from scratch, taking up a job at some small café and learning very fast the virtues of hard work and humility.
As redemption starts unfolding for Emma, she finds herself having to fight through haunting memories from her past and the men wronged by her. In healing herself, she sows a path that is challenging but lays the foundation to find the right connections and gives meaning to her life—hitherto unknown to her.
" Voluptueux et Bon Vivre: Every Woman's Want " is a suspenseful, at the same time deftly heartfelt story of ambition, downfall, and the painful climb towards redemption. In the case of Emma, it goes on to prove that while pursuit of luxury may be destructive, the search for meaning and integrity will lead to a richer, fuller life.

Gertrude Barrows Bennet is better known by her pen-name, Francis Stevens. With a career that only spanned three years between 1917 and 1920, when she stopped writing after her mother's death, she is credited as "the woman who invented dark fantasy". She was a direct influence on H.P. Lovecraft, and in the words of Sam Moskowitz was the "greatest woman writer of science fiction in the period between Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and C.L. Moore"“Mysterious, beautifully written, at times hallucinatory, and with a creeping atmosphere of dread to spare, "Claimed" is most surely an impressive piece of imaginative work. The author does not shrink from the depiction of violence and bloodshed, either. As in "The Citadel of Fear," here, an ancient god appears in modern times to stir up trouble, but in "Claimed," that god is never named (although Poseidon/Neptune is strongly suggested) or even clearly seen.[we see] the horrendous fate that befell the continent of Atlantis, and just how the coveted box wound up in the drink to begin with, and it really is some fascinating stuff. Vanaman, Leilah and especially old Robinson, I should add, are all well-drawn characters, with the good doctor being especially likable and sympathetic. Stevens peppers her novel with many memorable and haunting scenes, including an early exploration of the newly risen, barren island where the relic is initially found; a clairvoyant's unfortunate attempt to perform a little psychometry on the arcane object; and, indeed, the entire final 1/3 of the book, comprising as it does a tense chase at sea. The book has great sweep and drive, and is fairly relentless once it gets moving. Personally, I could not wait to get home after work to get back to it, and the evenings that I spent reading "Claimed" were very gripping ones, to be sure.” [Sandy Ferber, fantasyliterature.com]

"Who knew that pretending you're not falling for someone would be so much more difficult than pretending that you are?"

Stephanie Kendrick gave up her whole summer to ace her NYU film school screenwriting course, so she's pissed to be stuck with a preppy, spoiled frat boy as her writing partner. Then again, with her piercings, black-rimmed eyes, and Goth wardrobe, Stephanie isn't exactly Ethan Price's type, either. He's probably got his eye on some leggy blonde . . . or does he?

Ethan is desperate to make his snobbish mother forget the pedigreed girl who broke his heart. While Stephanie's a stretch as a decoy, the right makeover just might do the trick. She may not love the idea of playing Ethan's brainless Barbie girlfriend, but the free rent and luxurious digs make a tempting offer. So does the promise of a ready-made screenplay idea inspired by their charade.

But when Stephanie steps into Ethan's privileged world, the "acting" begins to feel all too real. The kissing and touching that were intended to fool the Hamptons crowd wind up manipulating them. And Stephanie faces a question she's too afraid to ask: Is Ethan falling for the real her or for the dolled-up princess he wants to see?

“Gritty and emotionally jagged… Power Struggle pours on the suspense as one twisted assassin plays hide-and-go-seek with a detective who refuses to give up.” –Tome Tender Book Blog
He led her into the barn and locked her in a small cage, and he left her there—alone—for now. But she had a feeling he’d return and when he did… She closed her eyes, not even wanting to think about could come next.
Detective Madison Knight is called to investigate the murder of a man who was stabbed multiple times and found in his home. Madison arrives on scene, but it isn’t the bloody mess that shakes her—it’s the victim’s identity. His name was Jimmy Bates, and he’s the man who killed her grandfather.
She struggles to remain objective, but she has a gut feeling Jimmy’s past connection to the Russian Mafia might have gotten him killed. It’s the motive that’s proving elusive to her. But when a woman—also connected with the mob—turns up murdered, a picture starts forming for Madison. If she’s right about why Jimmy and the woman were targeted, there’s something very dark and sinister going on in her city, and it puts Madison squarely in a killer’s crosshairs.
Her suspicions are given merit when Madison receives a letter threatening her and her loved ones, and the stakes only get higher when her sister, Chelsea, goes missing. Madison takes that for what it really means: the hit man who almost killed her months ago is back, and he’s calling her out for one final showdown. Only one of them will survive.
Power Struggle is an absolutely chilling mystery packed with heart-pounding suspense. Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Angela Marsons, and Leslie Wolfe.
