Sinopse

Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening, and Selected Short Stories' is a seminal work that probes the intricacies of female independence and self-discovery against the backdrop of late 19th-century America. Through its innovative narrative style, blending impressionistic prose with deep psychological insight, Chopin crafts a story that is both a social critique and a poignant exploration of personal liberation. The titular novella follows Edna Pontellier's tumultuous journey as she challenges societal expectations, set within the rich cultural context of New Orleans and the Creole society, enhancing its themes of feminist awakening and existential inquiry. Kate Chopin, a pioneer of feminist literature, was born in 1850 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her own experiences as a wife and mother, coupled with the influence of her progressive upbringing, shaped her literary focus on women's struggles for autonomy. Chopin's exposure to diverse social circles and her readings in the emerging fields of psychology and sociology undoubtedly fueled her desire to write works that addressed the conflicts faced by women in a patriarchal society. 'The Awakening' boldly explores these issues, often drawing from her personal reflections and societal observations. This anthology not only provides a vital insight into Chopin's narrative mastery but also serves as a timeless exploration of the human spirit's quest for identity and fulfillment. Readers interested in feminist literature, American realism, or the psychological dimensions of character will find this work not only thought-provoking but essential. Chopin's eloquent prose invites readers to reflect on the enduring questions of freedom and societal constraints.

The Chicken pushed a News Paper at Blake.
"Aliens from the center of the Earth take the Human race to court for ownership of the planet!" Blake read.
"Did you get this made as a joke?" asked Blake.

Kid Centrifuge is a rock band with dreams no bigger than other rock bands: ho-hum, tour and get signed and be famous and change the universe. Alas, unlike their rock-music forebears, our heroes live in a world that has largely moved on to techno, dance and pop. Yes, the music industry is still littered with double-crossers and backbiters, but now they're looking for DJs, and maybe guitar champions need no longer apply. So the kids tilt against the same old windmills musicians have battled forever, but with a suspicion that the same old animating dream - all you need is a guitar and a great song and you'll make a million bucks - is dead.
That gives their grass-roots aspirations more than a little desperation, and bad decisions ensue.
War On Sound gets inside its four featured musicians - Amanda, the singer; Sebastian, the guitarist; Kate, the drummer; and Scott, the bass player and angsty piloting force - the way Don DeLillo did in Great Jones Street and Roddy Doyle did in The Commitments. These talented kids wage war, blinkers in place, faith challenged...they have big success and big failure, and they keep playing. War on Sound is by turns hilarious and profound, and illuminates the contemporary music scene better than any recent novel.

With his sense of humor and ability to observe, Nikolai Gogol presents the world with stories of little people: the weak and fragile people who try to hold on to life in the gloomy cities of Russia. "The Mantle", which is listed among his masterpieces, describes how Russian bureaucracy turns everyone into a ghost of each other. It tells the tragicomic story of a poor low-ranking official named Akakiy Akakiyevich Bashmachkin, a faint character living on the margins of society who spends all his time diligently copying documents. Drawn into bureaucratic mechanisms of modern life, humiliated, and despised, hе finds solace in his fondest dream: a mantle that will protect him from the cold in the winter. This humble dream, however, will cost him way too much and will turn his life upside down...Adapted into a variety of stage and film interpretations, the story is a major milestone in Russian literature, as expressed by in a quote often attributed to Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "We have all come out from under Gogol's Mantle".
