Sinopse

In "The Story of Achilles," Carl Friedrich Becker crafts a masterful retelling of the tragic tale of the Greek hero Achilles, set against the backdrop of the Trojan War. Drawing on classical sources while employing a lyrical and evocative prose style, Becker captures the complexities of honor, rage, and mortality that define Achilles' character. The narrative intricately weaves historical scholarship with compelling storytelling, allowing readers to appreciate not just the mythological elements but also the cultural and philosophical questions of heroism and fate prevalent in ancient Greek literature. Carl Friedrich Becker, a noted scholar and historian, was deeply influenced by his studies of classical literature and philosophy, particularly the works of Homer and Hesiod. His exploration of the interplay between mythology and human experience mirrors his own belief in the timeless relevance of ancient stories. Becker's scholarly background affords him a unique perspective, which he channels into his writing, making "The Story of Achilles" not only a fascinating narrative but also a profound meditation on the human condition. "The dead do not always rest, and the past is never truly buried."

In this collection, Le Fanu takes us into the dark corners of the human conscience. "Madam Crowl's Ghost" tells the story of an ancient, wealthy woman whose deathbed secrets refuse to remain hidden. As a young servant girl discovers, the old woman's spirit continues to wander the corridors of Applewale House, driven by a terrifying need to reveal a hidden crime. In "The Dead Sexton," the focus shifts to the mysterious and grim Mr. Toby Appleby, a man whose life—and death—are bound up with a sinister bargain. These stories are not merely about things that go bump in the night; they are about the weight of guilt and the inevitability of justice from beyond the grave.

The Terror of the Domestic: Le Fanu excels at making the familiar feel threatening. A rustle of silk in an empty room, a misplaced key, or the sight of a familiar face where it shouldn't be—these are the tools he uses to create a sense of profound unease. He pioneered the idea that the most terrifying ghosts are those tied to our own families and histories.

The "Hanging Past": Both stories explore the theme of the "Unresolved." Whether it is a hidden will in a secret drawer or a soul sold for earthly gain, Le Fanu's ghosts are active agents of fate. They don't just haunt; they demand a reckoning. This collection showcases his ability to blend traditional folklore with a sophisticated psychological edge.

A Legacy of Influence: These tales were famously rediscovered and praised by M.R. James, the father of the modern ghost story. To read "Madam Crowl's Ghost" is to see the blueprint for every "secret in the attic" horror story that followed. It is essential reading for anyone who loves the classic, atmospheric thrill of the Victorian macabre.

I think that Ted would have come back some time; but Johnny says he doesn't believe he ever would, and Johnny ought to know, because Johnny's a boy. Anyhow, he couldn't have come back for four years. However, we did start for the wedding and so things came out all right, and Ted said we were a pair of twin special Providences.

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born on the 2nd February 1882 in Dublin into a middle-class family, and the eldest of ten surviving siblings
Admired as a brilliant student he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O'Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools of Clongowes and Belvedere. From there he went on to attend University College Dublin from 1898, studying English, French and Italian
In 1902, Joyce was now in his early twenties, and went to Paris to study Medicine but soon abandoned his teachings. Back in Dublin to attend to his dying Mother he met Nora Barnacle. They bonded immediately into a life-long match. Together they decided to emigrate to Europe. The couple lived in Trieste, Rome, Paris, and finally Zürich where Joyce pursued a variety of jobs and ventures to supplement his literary pursuits but none of these paid off.
After publishing a poetry volume, ‘Chamber Music’, in 1907, his short story collection ‘The Dubliners’, in 1914, helped establish his talent in the rapidly changing world.
Although far from home Joyce’s literary heart and works were set in his recollections of Dublin. Characters are close resemblances of family and friends and indeed enemies. His landmark work ‘Ulysses’, published in 1922, is set in the streets and alleyways of the city as it parallels Homer’s Odyssey in a variety of styles including its famed stream of consciousness.
His pen continued to produce classics of the order of ‘A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man’ and ‘Finnegan’s Wake’ together with several volumes of poetry and a play ‘The Exiles, in 1918.
On the 11th January 1941, Joyce underwent surgery in Zürich for a perforated duodenal ulcer. The next day he fell into a coma. On the 13th after a brief period of lucidity in which he called for his wife and son he passed. He was 58.
