Sinopse

"Sound Illusions" explores the fascinating realm of auditory perception, revealing how our brains actively construct the sounds we experience. This book delves into the science behind sonic deceptions, highlighting the psychological implications and technological applications they enable. The book emphasizes that auditory perception is not a passive process but an active interpretation, and understanding auditory illusions is essential for appreciating our auditory system. The book examines how sounds trick the brain and how echoes/reverberation affect spatial hearing. For instance, the McGurk effect demonstrates how visual information can alter what we hear, while the cocktail party effect showcases our ability to selectively focus on a single conversation amidst noise. By integrating research from psychoacoustics, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience, "Sound Illusions" offers a unique perspective on auditory illusions and their implications. Beginning with basic concepts in acoustics, the book progresses in three parts: auditory illusions, the role of echoes/reverberation, and applications in music, virtual reality, and assistive devices. It draws from psychoacoustic experiments and neuroimaging studies to provide empirical evidence, offering readers a deeper understanding of how our auditory system works and how it can be deceived.

Aftermath of World War II The:...

At the end of World War II, the world was faced with some sobering statistics. With over 50,000,000 deaths when both military and civilian losses had been accounted for, the death toll was devastating, and for many of those who lived in countries that had been ravaged by war, hunger and financial strain had become parts of daily life. Furthermore, beyond the physical damage was the growing knowledge of the atrocities that had been committed both before and during the war. In fact, the Allies were discussing how to dole out justice for Axis war crimes as early as 1943, and once the war was over, it was time for the nations to turn their attention towards determining the proper punishments.
In the wake of the war, the European continent was devastated, and the conflict left the Soviet Union and the United States as uncontested superpowers. This ushered in over 45 years of Cold War, and a political alignment of Western democracies against the Communist Soviet bloc that produced conflicts pitting allies on each sides fighting, even as the American and Soviet militaries never engaged each other. Though it never truly got “hot” between the two superpowers directly, the Cold War was a tense era until the dissolution of the USSR, and nothing symbolized the split more than the division of Berlin.
If anyone wondered whether the Cold War would dominate geopolitics, any hopes that it wouldn’t were dashed by the Soviets’ blockade of West Berlin in April 1948, ostensibly to protest the currency being used in West Berlin but unquestionably aiming to extend their control over Germany’s capital. By cutting off all access via roads, rail, and water, the Soviets hoped to force the Allies out, and at the same time, Stalin’s action would force a tense showdown that would test their mettle.

The former pastor who wrote this booklet realized his conscience could not accept at least three of the Bible's teachings. Some parts of it contradicted others and some scientific discoveries (not hypotheses) went against at least two of its teachings. This booklet is short because he wanted to focus on solid arguments against it all being "God-spirited."

Claudia Black, along with over a dozen world-renowned psychotherapists including Pia Mellody, Peter Levine, Patrick Carnes, Richard Schwartz, Resmaa Menakem, and Tian Dayton, provides clinical, human-focused insights on healing, treatment, and recovery.
People today are struggling with an unprecedented rise in mental health concerns such as depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, behavioral addictions, suicide, and more. The greatest barriers to getting help are their shame, their self-loathing, and the belief that their situation is hopeless. Undaunted Hope destigmatizes these disorders and invites readers to take the first step to help: asking for it.
Through the narratives of twenty-one alumni from Meadows Behavioral Healthcare, world-renowned treatment facilities, readers may see themselves in parts of the stories—and ultimately find the courage to ask for help. Each storyteller reveals the origins of their struggles, the chaotic course of events leading up to treatment, what help entailed, and how their lives became richer, fuller, and more hopeful once they were willing to take the first step toward healing.
This urgent and timely book presents the stories of the therapeutic work that occurs in Meadows' facilities, recognizing that trauma is most often the underlying issue to people’s struggles. The groundbreaking work at The Meadows has been validated by the landmark Adverse Childhood Experience Study (ACEs) carried out by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the past twenty-five years. These studies repetitively demonstrate the relationship of various traumas to mental health, substance abuse, and behavioral healthcare problems.
