Beschreibung

Solar Time explores the history of solar calendars and ancient civilizations' ingenious methods of timekeeping. These calendars were not just time-measuring tools, but crucial to religious practices, agricultural planning, and social structures. The book reveals how cultures, like the Egyptians and Mayans, developed sophisticated systems to align daily life with the sun's movements. These calendars demonstrate humanity's early grasp of astronomical principles; for example, the Mayan calendar's intricate mathematical underpinnings highlight its role in their cosmology. The book investigates diverse methodologies in constructing solar calendars and adapting to seasonal changes. It begins by introducing fundamental concepts of solar time and then examines specific calendars, starting with the Egyptian system and its influence. It progresses to explore the Mayan calendar and other significant solar calendars from ancient China and indigenous cultures worldwide. Solar Time emphasizes the cross-cultural similarities and differences, providing a global perspective on humanity's shared impulse to understand and measure time.

Revelatory memoir and cultural criticism that connects popular fantasy and our perceptions of mental illness to offer an empathetic path to compassionate care

Growing up, K.J. Aiello was fascinated by magical stories of dragons, wizards, and fantasy, where monsters were not what they seemed and anything was possible. These books and films were both a balm and an escape, a safe space where Aiello’s struggle with mental illness transformed from a burden into a strength that could win battles and vanquish villains.

A unique blend of memoir, research, and cultural criticism, The Monster and the Mirror charts Aiello’s life as they try to understand their own mental illness using The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and other stories as both guides to heroism and agency and cautionary tales of how mental illness is easily stereotyped as bad and violent. Aiello questions who is allowed to be “mad” versus “sane,” “good” versus “evil,” and “weak” versus “strong,” and who is allowed to tell their own stories. The Monster and the Mirror explores our perceptions of mental illness in a way that is challenging and tender, empathetic and knowledgeable, and offers a path to deeper understanding and compassionate care.

From 1959-1963, the United States worked toward putting satellites and humans into orbit via the Mercury program, but they continued to lag behind the Soviets. With the opening of a new decade, the Soviets reinforced their Space Race lead in a big way. On April 12, 1961, the world watched as the Soviets scored two major victories: they sent the first human being into space and made that man the first to orbit the Earth. Yuri Gagarin's success seemed to both solidify the Soviet's lead in the Space Race and underline the importance of scientific achievements in the race for geopolitical prestige. Even on the other side of the world, the United States could not deny the significance of the Vostok mission. President Kennedy graciously congratulated the Soviets, while privately conceding that it would be impossible for the United States to match Soviet space achievements for some time. At the same time, American policymakers also understood the depth of this latest defeat in the Space Race.
On February 20, 1962, John Glenn orbited the Earth, nearly a year after Gagarin’s orbit, and he remains best known for that historic feat, but in many ways it obscures a life and career of astonishing depth. Before the Friendship 7 mission, Glenn was already a distinguished combat fighter in multiple wars, and he was one of America’s best test pilots, a record that included making the first supersonic transcontinental flight in American history. He was an obvious candidate for the country’s first team of astronauts, and it launched him not only into space but into a long political career. All told, Glenn earned too many awards to count, and along the way, he became the oldest person to fly in space.
John Glenn: The Life and Legacy of the First American Astronaut to Orbit Earth profiles his life, chronicles his historic space mission, and details all the highlights before and after it.

From the humble beginnings of a frontier army camp, Fort Worth transformed into a city as cattle drives, railroads, oil, and national defense drove its economy. During the tremendous growth, the landscape and cultural imprint of the city changed drastically, and much of Cowtown was lost to history. Witness the birth of western swing music and the death of a cloud dancer. See mansions of the well-heeled and saloons of the well-armed. Meet two gunfighters, one flamboyant preacher, one serial killer and one very short subway carrying passengers back in time to discover more of Fort Worth. Author Mike Nichols presents a colorful history tour from the North Side to the South Side's Battle of Buttermilk Junction.

America: Standing Strong, from award-winning author Robert J. Emery (www.robertjemeryauthor.com)
In 1920, while campaigning for the office of president, Warren G. Harding said in a campaign speech, “America’s present need is not heroics, but healing; not nostrums, but normalcy.”
That is where America finds itself today.
“America: Standing Strong” brings together investigative reporters, scholars, scientists, philosophers, medical professionals, elected officials across the political spectrum and an endless string of quotes from respected voices, past and present, to examine the events of recent years, not what we already know, but what we may not, or have yet to acknowledge, in our quest for reformation. Every voice counts.

Most students prepare for the SAT the same way:
More practice. More time. More effort.
And yet… scores often don’t reflect it.
After scoring a 1490 on the SAT and earning a full-ride scholarship to the University of Central Florida, I noticed something that didn’t make sense:
Some of the smartest students I knew—straight-A students—were scoring in the 1200s.
That one test was limiting their college options and scholarships.
    It felt incredibly unfair.
And it revealed a deeper truth:
The SAT isn’t about working harder. It’s about working with the right system.
In Predictable SAT Results Using AI, you’ll learn how to replace guesswork with a clear, structured approach that combines proven learning science with the power of AI.
    Inside, you’ll discover:
✔ How to identify your child’s highest-impact weaknesses
✔ A simple system to analyze mistakes and improve faster
✔ AI prompts you can use immediately for targeted practice
✔ A clear method to track progress with confidence
    Go from confusion → clarity…
    From guessing → predictable results.
