Sinopse

Future Habitat Visions explores groundbreaking architectural solutions for life beyond Earth and in our oceans. It examines the potential of Mars colonies and floating cities as responses to climate change, resource depletion, and overpopulation. The book highlights the necessity of sustainable and innovative design, integrating advanced technologies with ecological principles for successful human settlements in extreme environments.

The book begins by introducing vital concepts like closed-loop life support systems for Martian habitats and buoyant structure engineering for oceanic cities. It then progresses into specific architectural designs, discussing structural integrity, psychological considerations, ethical implications of terraforming, and socio-economic challenges. For example, radiation shielding on Mars mirrors the need for climate resilience here on Earth. This unique book connects architecture with aerospace engineering, marine biology, and environmental science.

It offers a holistic approach that considers technological innovation, ethical responsibility, and the creation of inclusive, sustainable communities. By emphasizing sustainable architecture, innovative design, and in-situ resource utilization, the book provides a comprehensive vision for the future of human civilization.

'Theatre is the greatest of collaborative art forms, and Shakespeare its greatest exponent: he used the form better than anyone else ever has to speak truth about the world.'
In Exploring Shakespeare, acclaimed theatre director Bill Alexander takes us inside the rehearsal room to reveal – in unprecedented and captivating detail – exactly what happens there. He examines the key relationship between the actors and the director, how they work together to bring Shakespeare's vision to life, and how choices are made that will shape every aspect of the play in production.
Full of acute observations and perceptions drawn from a long and brilliant career, the book covers the essential aspects of any Shakespeare production, from understanding the world of the play, to preparing and cutting the text, deciding on costumes and set design, handling soliloquies, and considering character and backstory.
There are detailed studies of eight plays spanning the full length and breadth of the Shakespearean canon, from Titus Andronicus and The Shrew to The Tempest, via Othello, Hamlet, Lear, The Merchant of Venice and Twelfth Night. Alexander also provides first-hand case studies of three of his own productions, including his famous Richard III starring Antony Sher.
Personal, forthright, and full of pragmatic advice, Exploring Shakespeare is a masterclass for directors and actors, and a fascinating insight for anyone interested in Shakespeare.
Bill Alexander was an Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and then Artistic Director of Birmingham Rep. His landmark productions include Richard III and The Merry Wives of Windsor (both Olivier Award-winners), The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew, Titus Andronicus and King Lear with Corin Redgrave.
'Bill Alexander is a brilliant director, whose work has powerfully shaped my understanding of Shakespeare's plays, Richard III most of all' James Shapiro, author of 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare

    Jin Dynasty - Northern Warriors...

The Jurchens, the ancestors of the Manchu people, emerged as a formidable force in northeastern Asia long before they established the Jin Dynasty. Originating from the forests and plains of Manchuria, they were a collection of semi-nomadic and agricultural tribes with a distinct culture, language, and way of life. Their society was organized into clans led by chieftains, and they engaged in hunting, fishing, and farming while maintaining a warrior tradition that would later define their military prowess. Although they lived independently, they often found themselves under the influence of stronger neighboring powers, including the Korean kingdoms and the Khitan-led Liao Dynasty.
The Liao Dynasty, which dominated much of northern China and Manchuria, exerted control over the Jurchens for centuries. The Khitan rulers forced them into a tributary system, requiring them to provide labor, furs, and horses in exchange for nominal autonomy. While this arrangement allowed the Jurchens to retain aspects of their culture, it also placed them in a subordinate position. However, resentment grew among the Jurchen clans, who viewed the Khitan overlords as oppressive rulers. This growing dissatisfaction set the stage for their eventual rebellion.
Despite their subjugation, the Jurchens developed a strong warrior tradition and mastered cavalry warfare, which would later give them an advantage over their adversaries. They organized themselves into tribal confederations and honed their skills in archery and horseback combat, making them formidable in battle. Their ability to adapt to different terrains, combined with their knowledge of the harsh northern climate, allowed them to maintain resilience and independence, even under Liao control. Over time, they also adopted elements of Chinese and Khitan governance, learning valuable administrative techniques that would later aid them in state-building.
