Walt Whitman was an immense talent. And a prodigious one at that. Associated with the Free Verse movement his poems are usually on the longer side. Iconic works such as Leaves Of Grass divided opinion on their publication. Some argued it was obscene others such as Ralph Waldo Emerson rallied to his cause. Whitman was born on May 31st 1819 on Long Island. By the age of 11 his schooling was finished and he embarked on a series of jobs that eventually led to various newspaper editorships. He began to write poetry in the 1840s and in 1855 published his first of many versions of Leaves Of Grass. Thereafter he wrote solidly until his death on March 26, 1892. He is buried in Camden, New Jersey. Whitman wrote that “The proof of a poet is that his country absorbs him as affectionately as he has absorbed it."

In a utopian future society, where all social unrest has been engineered away, a man has an awakening. Starting as a happy worker drone, he meets a woman who reveals to him the reality of life outside the state's control - the glories of chaotic nature in the world and in the heart. They become entwined with a conspiracy against the state, and eventually try to escape beyond the walls of the state's control... only to meet betrayal, failure, and a dark ending in the glorious light of the state's total control.
Sound familiar? It's probably because you've read Orwell's nineteen eighty-four, which he wrote eight months after he read We, wrote a review of it, and said he was taking it as the model for his next novel. Or Huxley's Brave New World.
Or maybe you've read Vonnegut's Player Piano, which of Vonnegut said he "cheerfully ripped off the plot of Brave New World, whose plot had been cheerfully ripped off from Yevgeny Zamyatin's We". You might even have come across other plays on the theme, such as Ayn Rand's Anthem or Vladimir Nabokov's Invitation to a Beheading, written while Nabakov was reading We. Or even possibly Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed.
The tale is familiar, but the satirical and farcical comedy is a delight all of its own.

A virtuosic study of one man's descent into religious mania in small-town Ireland.
Inishfree might seem like a quaint Irish town, but fierce evangelist Thomas Magill knows better. He knows that jovial Dwain Flynn is a miserable drunk, that Timmy O'Leary enslaves his lovely mother, and that sweet Mrs Cleary is a blasphemous flirt.
It is down to Thomas, with God on his shoulder, to save this sinful place. But the townsfolk are not listening, an angel is misbehaving and a barking dog will not be silenced. Just how far will Thomas go in his quest for salvation?
This new edition of Enda Walsh's Misterman was published alongside the 2012 production at the National Theatre starring Cillian Murphy.
'a fantastic, whirring monologue of small town life and flickering faith... a ninety-minute rollercoaster, kaleidoscopic in mood and construction, a perfectly realised stage poem' WhatsOnStage
'a terrific study of religious mania, loneliness and longing' The Arts Desk
