With the expansion of the cruising sector, it is difficult to keep up as the goalposts keep changing, but one thing hasn't changed: the travel industry's inability to provide a disabled traveller with what they need to plan a stress-free adventure.
Information on accessibility can be hard to find and the internet is filled with dead and out-of-date sites. Being disabled can be hard enough but I believe information is power, the power to be able to control our choices and know what we are going to come up against when we pick a cruise.
This general how-to on cruising is the first of its kind, aimed at giving you the power to make your own choices, take control and organise the perfect seafaring holiday, getting the best out of both the ship and its destinations.

The Qing Dynasty, China’s last imperial dynasty, emerged from the northeastern frontier, led by the Manchu people. Before establishing their rule over China, the Manchus were a semi-nomadic group descended from the Jurchens, who had previously ruled northern China under the Jin Dynasty. In the early 17th century, Nurhaci, a formidable leader, laid the foundation for Manchu power by unifying various Jurchen tribes and adopting administrative and military structures inspired by the Ming Dynasty. His successor, Hong Taiji, continued these efforts, formally establishing the Qing Dynasty in 1636. However, the conquest of China was still incomplete, as the Ming Dynasty continued to rule the heartland.
The decline of the Ming Dynasty provided an opportunity for the Qing to assert their dominance. By the early 17th century, the Ming government was weakened by internal corruption, peasant uprisings, and economic distress exacerbated by famine and mismanagement. The most devastating of these rebellions was led by Li Zicheng, a former postal worker turned insurgent, whose forces overran Beijing in 1644. The fall of the Ming capital marked a critical turning point. With the Ming emperor dead and the central government in disarray, a Ming general, Wu Sangui, faced a difficult choice: resist the rebel forces or seek outside aid. He chose the latter, opening the gates of the Great Wall at Shanhai Pass to the advancing Qing army. The Manchus, under the leadership of Prince Dorgon, seized the moment, swiftly capturing Beijing and declaring the establishment of Qing rule.

The Muromachi Period, spanning from 1336 to 1573, marked a significant turning point in Japanese history, characterized by the rise of the Ashikaga Shogunate and the gradual shift toward decentralized feudal rule. This period emerged following the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate, as Ashikaga Takauji established his military government in Kyoto. The political, social, and cultural transformations that unfolded during this time laid the foundation for the later Sengoku era, a period of constant warfare among regional warlords.
The decline of the Kamakura Shogunate stemmed from mounting dissatisfaction among the samurai class, who had grown discontent with the Hojo regents’ rule. The Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281 had placed immense strain on the government, as victory brought no financial rewards for the warriors who had fought to defend the nation. With no lands to distribute as compensation, loyalty to the shogunate weakened, creating an opportunity for ambitious leaders to challenge its authority. Amid this unrest, Emperor Go-Daigo launched the Kenmu Restoration (1333–1336), an effort to reestablish imperial rule. However, his failure to recognize the interests of the samurai led to his downfall.
Ashikaga Takauji, originally a supporter of the emperor, turned against him and seized power, defeating both imperial and Kamakura loyalists. In 1336, Takauji established his own military government, known as the Muromachi Bakufu, in Kyoto. Unlike the Kamakura Shogunate, which ruled from a distant military capital, the Muromachi Shogunate was strategically located in the heart of Japan’s cultural and political sphere. Takauji’s rule was solidified in 1338 when he was officially

Can you combine wanderlust and motherhood?
    Margo Weinstein did.
For decades, Margo Weinstein escaped her demanding legal practice by kayaking, whitewater rafting, trekking, and climbing in remote regions. Then she had a son and found herself in the kiddie pool on a Disney cruise. Searching for a new path, a jalan-jalan, that could accommodate motherhood and satisfy her wanderlust, she dragged her young son to the other side of the world, moving first to Shanghai and then to Bali.
Adventure seekers and armchair travelers will relish listening to Weinstein’s exploits as she battles baboons in Zimbabwe and surfaces under a capsized raft in Pakistan. Parents will appreciate her efforts to explore the world with a kid in tow and her expat life in a villa where a python on the stairs, a scorpion in the outdoor shower, and Hindu offerings ceremonially placed next to the infinity pool and Wi-Fi router are daily realities.
Told with intelligence, humor, spirit, and Weinstein’s version of practicality, Jalan-Jalan will inspire you to find your path and take the trip of a lifetime.

In an age where every destination is pinned, reviewed, and photographed, what does it mean to truly get lost?
In The Art of Getting Lost, acclaimed travel writer Reece Davis invites readers to step off the grid and wander into the unknown — not to escape, but to rediscover the joy of uncertainty. Through journeys across hidden trails, unmarked villages, and moments of profound stillness, Davis explores how losing our way can bring us closer to the world, and to ourselves.
Part memoir, part meditation, this book celebrates the beauty of disorientation — the quiet thrill of discovery when plans unravel, maps blur, and wonder takes the lead.
Wise, lyrical, and deeply human, The Art of Getting Lost reminds us that sometimes the greatest adventures begin the moment we stop knowing where we are.
