Sinopsis

In "The War with Mexico (Vol. 1 & 2)," Justin Harvey Smith provides an exhaustive examination of the 1846-1848 conflict between the United States and Mexico, offering a nuanced narrative that intertwines political, military, and social perspectives. His meticulous research and engaging prose reveal the complexities of this pivotal moment in American history, characterized by vivid battle descriptions, contemporary accounts, and a critical analysis of the war's implications for both nations. Smith's literary style reflects the historiographical approaches of his time, blending detailed documentation with a storytelling aspect that breathes life into the events and figures involved, which firmly situates the work in the context of 19th-century American historiography that sought to grapple with the consequences of manifest destiny. Justin Harvey Smith, a prominent historian and an astute observer of the American political landscape, was influenced by the era's burgeoning interest in national identity and expansionism. His scholarly background and experiences offered him unique insights into the motivations, conflicts, and legacies surrounding the war, shaping a work that is part historical analysis and part moral inquiry. Smith's commitment to presenting a balanced and comprehensive view of the war reveals his deep understanding of the complexities inherent in U.S.-Mexico relations. This monumental work is essential for scholars, students, and casual readers interested in American history, military studies, and colonial expansion. In the spirit of Our House is On Fire by Greta Thunberg, the astonishing and deeply inspiring memoir from a young Afghani activist, Amnesty International Global Youth Ambassador, founder of the NGO LEARN, and women's education activist whose advocacy for the disappearing girls of rural Afghanistan has led to her being ruthlessly targeted by the Taliban.

Inspired by generations of her family's unwavering belief in the power of education, Pashtana Durrani recognized her calling early in life: to educate Afghanistan's girls and young women, raised in a society where learning is forbidden. In a country devastated by war and violence, where girls are often married off before reaching their teenage years and prohibited from leaving their homes, heeding that call seemed both impossible and dangerous.

Pashtana was raised in an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan where her father, a tribal leader, founded a community school for girls within their home. Fueled by his insistence that despite being a girl, she mattered and deserved an education, Pashtana was sixteen when, against impossible odds, she was granted a path out of the refugee camp: admittance to a preparatory program at Oxford. Unthinkably and to her parents' horror, she chose a different path. She chose Afghanistan.

Pashtana founded the nonprofit LEARN and developed a program for getting educational materials directly into the hands of girls in remote areas of the country, training teachers in digital literacy. Her commitment to education has made her a target of the Taliban. Still, she continues to fight for women's education and autonomy in Afghanistan and beyond.

Courageous and inspiring, Last to Eat, Last to Learn is the story of how just one person can transform a family, a tribe, a country. It reminds us of the emancipatory power of learning and the transformational potential that lies within each of us.

"An inspiring portrait of a change-maker in action." —Publishers Weekly

The powerful forces of the United States Navy (USN), Marine Corps, and Army advanced inexorably against Imperial Japan in 1944. Following massive interdiction of Japanese merchant shipping by American submarines and multiple naval victories, the Americans stood poised to liberate the Philippines, then move on to locations closer to the Japanese home islands.
In early 1944, arguments raged over the best approach to the “strategic triangle” created by Formosa, Luzon, and China. Finally, on March 12th, the Joint Chiefs of Staff – consisting of Admirals William D. Leahy and Ernest J. King, and Generals George C. Marshall and Henry H. “Hap” Arnold - issued a directive picking the next target: “[T]he most feasible approach to the Formosa-Luzon-China area is by way of Marianas-Carolines-Palau-Mindanao area, and that the control of the Marianas-Carolines-Palau area is essential to the projection of our forces into the former area, and their subsequent effective employment therefrom.”
The Americans' plans focused on three islands near the southern end of a 15-island, north to south aligned island chain: Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. These islands, relatively large, offered space for the construction of large air bases within strategic bomber range of Japan itself, as well as closer targets.
The Japanese also recognized the strategic importance of the Mariana Islands, and Saipan in particular, given its location just 1,272 miles from Tokyo itself. This would place the Japanese capital well within the 3,250 mile range of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. With these facts in their possession and the Marianas as one of the Americans' most logical next choices, the Japanese worked to move both reinforcements and materials for new fortifications to the southern Marianas in early 1944.
With that, the stage was set for the kind of deadly amphibious operations that would take place not only on the Marianas but also Iwo Jima and Okinawa after it.
