This is a selection of short stories recounting, with gentle satire and tolerant good humour, the small town provincial life at the end of the nineteenth century, based around the six towns in the county of Staffordshire, England, known as the Potteries. Arnold Bennett chose to fictionalize these towns by changing their names and omitting one (Fenton) as he apparently felt that “Five Towns” was more euphonious than “Six Towns”. The real town names which are thinly disguised in the novel are: Hanley, Longton, Burslem and Tunstal, the fifth, Stoke, became “Knype”.Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was born in Hanley, the eldest child of a pawnbroker who subsequently became a solicitor. Bennett’s father wished him to become a solicitor too, but he failed his university entrance examination and instead became a solicitor's clerk, at first in his father's office and, from 1889, in London. He showed early promise as a writer winning a writing competition in a local newspaper as a boy. In London he began to see his writing published in popular magazines and he joined the staff of ‘Woman’ magazine in 1893.His first novel to be published, A Man from the North, appeared in 1898 and its success allowed him to give up other work to concentrate on writing. His first short story (A Letter Home) was written in 1893 and appears in Tales of the Five Towns. (Summary by Martin Clifton)

    Series Entry: 125
    Author: Edgar Allan Poe
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1838
    Public Domain: Yes
    Description:
Ligeia is one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most haunting and enigmatic tales — a meditation on love, death, and the terrifying power of the human will.
The unnamed narrator recounts his marriage to the mysterious and intellectual Lady Ligeia, a woman of extraordinary beauty and even more extraordinary mind. Her vast learning, her fierce intensity, and her almost supernatural strength of spirit leave an indelible mark upon him. Yet it is her obsession with the triumph of the will over mortality that proves most unsettling — a doctrine she clings to even as illness draws her toward the grave.
After Ligeia’s death, the narrator retreats into a decaying English abbey with a new bride, the fair and fragile Lady Rowena. But the shadow of his first wife lingers in every darkened chamber and heavy tapestry. As Rowena sickens under strange and unaccountable circumstances, the narrator witnesses a series of chilling transformations that blur the boundary between life and death, dream and reality.
In Ligeia, Poe crafts a tale steeped in Gothic atmosphere — rich with opium-hazed visions, funereal splendor, and mounting psychological dread. The horror is not loud but insidious, growing from grief, obsession, and the unrelenting question: can the human will conquer even death itself?
Narrated by Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures Poe’s lyrical prose, mounting unease, and the unforgettable climax of one of Gothic literature’s most disturbing masterpieces — a story where love refuses to die… and something waits beyond the veil.
