The subject of this gothic story is inheritance and succession. Le Fanu, famed for his creepy, supernatural, and gothic tales, is once again able to enthrall readers with his storytelling. The first paragraph of chapter 1 sets the scene, as Fanu describes a large and isolated palladian mansion house that is falling into decay and neglect.
