Sinossi

In "Europa's Fairy Book," Joseph Jacobs presents a rich tapestry of European folk tales, intertwining elements from various cultures to create a modern compendium of fairy tales that captures the essence of the continent's storytelling traditions. Beautifully written in a narrative style that balances oral tradition with literary refinement, Jacobs elevates common folk narratives while preserving their intrinsic charm. This collection not only recounts enchanting stories but also provides context on their origins, showcasing their moral underpinnings, cultural significance, and the transitional nature of folklore from oral to written form in a rapidly modernizing world. Joseph Jacobs, an influential figure in the late 19th century, was a dedicated folklorist and scholar who sought to preserve the enchanting word of fairy tales that had been orally transmitted for generations. His commitment to the authentic representation of folk tales reflects his upbringing in a culturally rich environment, where stories from various backgrounds shaped his understanding of narrative. Jacobs believed in the power of these tales to offer moral lessons and entertain, guiding his meticulous curation of "Europa's Fairy Book." "Europa's Fairy Book" is a compelling read for anyone interested in folklore, literature, or cultural studies, as it offers readers a vivid glimpse into the heart of European fairy tales. Jacobs' deft storytelling not only delights with whimsical plots but also serves as a lens through which to explore the socio-cultural landscapes of Europe. This collection is a must-read for scholars and casual readers alike who wish to engage with the complexities and wonders of fairy tales.

Pogo Planet by Donald A. Wollheim - Introducing that modest little superman, that shrinking violet of destiny, Ajax Calkins, and a world where you had to hop, in some way, to get where you wanted to go!
As my ship hit the darkness that was the outer atmosphere of Midplanet, I thrilled to the thought that I, Ajax Calkins, had at last achieved my rightful place among the pioneers of space. Even when my ship bounced on the green soil, flew end over end upwards to come down ka-plunk in the wrong side of a gooey thick swamp, I exulted that I was the first in possession of a major planet that had been overlooked by the rest of the interplanetary crowd.
As I picked myself up from the midst of a pile of miscellaneous equipment, hiking ropes, elephant guns, para-rays, spare shoes and cans of Unifood, and rubbed my bruised arms and head, I thought of how many millions would give their all to be in my place.
Midplanet! How the whole system had thrilled when its discovery was finally determined last year! For decades science had known there was a planet between Saturn and Uranus, ever since Pickering had proved the perturbations of those planets' orbits pointed to a body between them. Yet telescopes had always failed to detect it. Few had taken it seriously. Yet, it was there.
It was discovered finally by electromagnetic induction coils at the Mars Prime Observatory. It was rechecked from Flagstaff and searched for by Tycho Eye. The latter could not see it. It was still invisible, a strangely dark world.
It was then that I conceived my great idea. For years I had secretly nourished my grievance against the world into which I found myself born. All the great heroic acts had been done. The major planets pioneered, Gretelspoon had at last opened up Pluto, and there was nothing left for me to do to show that I too was made of godlike stuff. But Midplanet ... there was my chance!

In the great age of classic science fiction, writers kept returning to one world more than any other — a place of thin air, endless horizons, and secrets buried beneath red dust.
Mars and Martians and Nothing But Mars and Martians 2 brings together twenty remarkable vintage stories from the 1930s through the 1960s — tales of explorers, settlers, scientists, wanderers, and the strange beings who may already call Mars home.
Some stories are tense and thought-provoking. Some are ironic and playful. Others remind us that the unknown rarely behaves the way we expect.
Here you’ll find unforgettable works from masters such as Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, Fritz Leiber, Clifford D. Simak, John Wyndham, Harlan Ellison, and more — each imagining Mars in a different light: dangerous, curious, hopeful, lonely, and deeply mysterious.
