Sinopse

This edition includes the following editor's analysis: Buddhism, religion and/or philosophy?

First published in 1879, “Chinese Buddhism” is a comprehensive survey of Chinese Buddhism by British Protestant missionary Joseph Edkins. “Chinese Buddhism” is a valuable reference work for anyone studying Chinese Buddhism, as well as a snapshot of China in the late 19th century.

Edkins gives the historical background of the introduction of Buddhism into China, and its subsequent evolution, including biographies of the Buddhist Patriarchs. There are extensive descriptions of Chinese Buddhist geography and cosmology, the calendar of festivals, temple architecture, and the vast array of entities which are represented in sacred spaces.
Edkins also enumerates dozens of Chinese Buddhist and provides translations of some excerpts. Edkins was a skilled linguist and explains how Sanskrit terms were transferred into Chinese. He also discusses Confucian, Taoist and other Chinese belief systems.

Joseph Edkins was a Protestant missionary, and his primary concern at times appears to be how to convert Chinese Buddhists.

Is it possible to take advantage of the benefits of data collection—and mitigate risks—for both companies and customers?

Most consumers are not very skilled at evaluating privacy risks; they're either unable to determine the cost of sharing personal data online or unaware of what they're sharing. (Doesn't everyone scroll down without reading to click "I accept"?) Without much intervention from most federal or state-level governments, companies are on their own to define what qualifies as reasonable use. In today's digital surveillance economy, there are no clear-cut best practices or guidelines. Gathering and using information can help customers—we see that in personalization and autofill of online forms. But companies must act in the best interest of their customers and treat the sensitive information users give them with the ethical care of doctors, lawyers, and financial advisers. The challenges of operating in a digital ecosystem aren't going away. Customer Data and Privacy: The Insights You Need from Harvard Business Review will help you understand the tangled interdependencies and complexities and develop strategies that allow your company to be good stewards, collecting, using, and storing customer data responsibly.

Andean Economies explores the economic paths of three key countries—Bolivia, Chile, and Peru—that make up the backbone of the Andean region. This 3-in-1 volume traces how natural resources, policy choices, and historical legacies have shaped the rise and fall of economic fortunes across these nations. From copper and lithium to agriculture and tourism, the Andes are not just mountains—they’re economic lifelines that have brought both prosperity and hardship to those who call this region home.
In From Prosperity to Peril, the book examines how sudden wealth from resource booms often led to financial crises and social unrest, especially in countries like Bolivia, where inequality and political tensions persist. Chile’s economic journey highlights one of the most stable and market-driven economies in South America, marked by both praise for reform and criticism for inequality. Finally, Peru’s economic evolution tells a story of resilience—how a country historically plagued by instability and poverty transformed into one of the region’s fastest-growing economies in recent decades.
This comprehensive overview is ideal for anyone seeking to understand the forces behind economic change in South America’s Andean corridor—where every boom comes with risk, and every crisis opens the door for transformation.
