Synopsis

Under Western Eyes is Joseph Conrad's penetrating novel of political idealism, betrayal, and moral isolation, set against the turbulent world of early twentieth-century Russian revolutionary movements. Dark, introspective, and psychologically complex, the novel offers a profound exploration of conscience under the weight of political extremism.

The story follows Razumov, a reserved and ambitious university student in St. Petersburg whose quiet life is shattered when a revolutionary assassin seeks refuge in his room. Faced with an impossible moral dilemma, Razumov makes a choice that binds him irrevocably to the revolutionary cause he neither believes in nor fully understands. His decision leads to exile, surveillance, and a life governed by fear and self-betrayal.

Narrated by an English teacher living abroad, the novel unfolds through layered perspectives that emphasize misunderstanding, cultural distance, and moral ambiguity. Conrad deliberately distances the reader from certainty, mirroring Razumov's growing alienation and inner turmoil.

As Razumov becomes entangled with exiled revolutionaries in Geneva, Conrad exposes the contradictions of political idealism and the emotional cost of living under constant suspicion. The novel scrutinizes the destructive power of ideology—on individuals, relationships, and moral integrity.

Somber, ironic, and intensely reflective, Under Western Eyes stands alongside The Secret Agent as one of Conrad's most important political novels. It is a haunting meditation on guilt, responsibility, and the price of silence in a world dominated by ideological conflict.

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. He came to be regarded a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of what he saw as an impassive, inscrutable universe.Conrad is considered a literary impressionist by some and an early modernist by others, though his works also contain elements of 19th-century realism. His narrative style and anti-heroic characters, as in Lord Jim, for example, have influenced numerous authors. Many dramatic films have been adapted from and inspired by his works. Numerous writers and critics have commented that his fictional works, written largely in the first two decades of the 20th century, seem to have anticipated later world events.Writing near the peak of the British Empire, Conrad drew on the national experiences of his native Poland—during nearly all his life, parceled out among three occupying empires—and on his own experiences in the French and British merchant navies, to create short stories and novels that reflect aspects of a European-dominated world—including imperialism and colonialism—and that profoundly explore the human psyche.

'Yes, I know genius when I meet it. I may not like it—but I recognize it.'

First published in 1930 under the pseudonym 'Mary Westmacott', Giant's Bread shows a young Agatha Christie establishing herself as one of the finest writers of her day.

Emotionally charged and a novel which sweeps generations, Giant's Bread tells a tale of genius, obsession and unruly ambition. Following the life and career of Vernon Deyre – an extraordinary and brilliant musician – from childhood to fame, Christie explores love, betrayal and the sacrifices demanded by art itself. Set against the backdrop of a vividly drawn interwar Europe, Vernon learns that, despite his talents, there is a high price to pay for writing the masterpiece of his life. A crucial decision needs to be made before he risks losing it all… but what is the right path? Atmospheric and profoundly human, Giant's Bread reveals a side to Christie far removed from her murder mysteries – but remains nonetheless as thrilling.
Agatha Christie (1890 – 1976) was an English author. A Wonder Book is a timeless classic in which Nathaniel Hawthorne retells the great myths of ancient Greece with warmth, imagination, and moral insight, making them accessible and enchanting for readers of all ages. First published in 1851, the book transforms legendary tales into vivid, approachable stories, narrated by a gentle storyteller named Eustace Bright, who shares these wonders with a group of eager children.

Within these pages, readers encounter some of the most enduring figures of classical mythology—Perseus, Medusa, Midas, Pandora, Hercules, and others—reimagined through Hawthorne's distinctive literary voice. While the original myths are often dark or complex, Hawthorne softens their edges without stripping them of meaning, emphasizing themes of courage, humility, curiosity, temptation, and the consequences of human choices.

What sets A Wonder Book apart is Hawthorne's ability to blend fantasy with moral reflection. Each story is rich in imagination and adventure, yet subtly invites readers to think about right and wrong, wisdom and folly, selflessness and pride. His language is elegant but accessible, making the book an ideal introduction to mythology for young readers, while still offering depth and charm that adults can appreciate.

Beyond its storytelling, A Wonder Book reflects Hawthorne's broader literary genius—his talent for symbolism, his sensitivity to human nature, and his belief that stories can educate the heart as well as the mind. The framing narrative, in which the myths are told in a peaceful countryside setting, adds a sense of intimacy and continuity, drawing readers into a world where ancient legends feel alive and relevant.

A Wonder Book remains a beloved work of children's literature and a foundational text for anyone interested in mythology, classic storytelling, or Hawthorne's enduring legacy. It is a celebration of imagination, a bridge between ancient myth and modern readers, and a reminder of the power of stories to inspire wonder across generations.
