Sinopsis

Our America (Nuestra América, 1891) is one of José Martí's most influential political and cultural essays. Written as a call to unity and self-awareness, the text urges the nations of Latin America to reject foreign domination and to build their future based on their own realities, histories, and identities. Martí argues that true independence requires more than political separation from colonial powers—it demands intellectual and cultural emancipation. He criticizes Latin American elites who imitate European models without understanding the needs of their own people. Instead, Martí insists that governments must be rooted in local knowledge, shaped by the land, the traditions, and the diverse populations of the continent, including Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. He warns that ignorance, internal division, and blind imitation create vulnerability to external intervention, especially from the growing power of the United States. Martí promotes education, justice, and dignity as essential foundations for national strength. His vision is not isolationist, but protective: Latin America must engage with the world without surrendering its identity. Combining poetic language with sharp political insight, Our America remains a timeless manifesto for sovereignty, cultural pride, and collective solidarity across the Americas.

The first account of the Allied navies' vital contribution to the success of the D-Day landings and the Normandy campaign

The Allied liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe is one of the most widely recognized events of modern history. The assault phase, Operation Neptune, began with the D-Day landings in Normandy—one of the most complex amphibious operations in history, involving 7,000 ships and nearly 200,000 men. But despite this immense effort, the wider naval campaign has been broadly forgotten.

Nick Hewitt draws on fascinating new material to describe the violent sea battle which mirrored the fighting on land, and the complex campaign at sea which enabled the Allied assault. Aboard ships ranging from frail plywood landing craft to sleek destroyers, sailors were active combatants in the operation of June 1944, and had worked tirelessly to secure the Seine Bay in the months preceding it. They fought battles against German submarines, aircraft, and warships, and maintained careful watch to keep control of the English Channel.

Hewitt recounts these sailors' stories for the first time—and shows how, without their efforts, D-Day would have failed.

Amos was one of the Twelve Minor Prophets. An older contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah, Amos was active c. 760-755 BCE during the rule of kings Jeroboam II of Israel and Uzziah of Judah. He was from the southern Kingdom of Judah but preached in the northern Kingdom of Israel. Amos wrote at a time of relative peace and prosperity but also of neglect of God's laws. He spoke against an increased disparity between the very wealthy and the very poor. His major themes of justice, God's omnipotence, and divine judgment became staples of prophecy. The Book of Amos is attributed to him.

Not far from Seattle skyscrapers live 150-year-old clams, more than 250 species of fish, and underwater kelp forests as complex as any terrestrial ecosystem. For millennia, vibrant Coast Salish communities have lived beside these waters dense with nutrient-rich foods, with cultures intertwined through exchanges across the waterways. Transformed by settlement and resource extraction, Puget Sound and its future health now depend on a better understanding of the region's ecological complexities.

Focusing on the area south of Port Townsend and between the Cascade and Olympic mountains, Williams uncovers human and natural histories in, on, and around the Sound. In conversations with archaeologists, biologists, and tribal authorities, Williams traces how generations of humans have interacted with such species as geoducks, salmon, orcas, rockfish, and herring. He sheds light on how warfare shaped development and how people have moved across this maritime highway, in canoes, the mosquito fleet, and today's ferry system. The book also takes an unflinching look at how the Sound's ecosystems have suffered from human behavior, including pollution, habitat destruction, and the effects of climate change.
