  Julius Franklin Howell was born in Suffolk, Virginia, in 1846. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army in 1862 and served in the 24th Virginia Cavalry until 1864 when his regiment was moved to the north of Richmond as Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant fought near Petersburg. Howell took part in the cavalry charge against Union artillery and infantry at a clearing near the Darbytown Road, during which he was shot in the leg. After his recovery, Howell returned to fight and was captured at the Battle of Sailor's Creek in Amelia County, Virginia, on April 6, 1865, and held in a Union prison at Point Lookout, MD. when he heard about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. After the war, he became an educator, preserving the memories of the Confederate soldier and serving as Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans for decades. In 1947, he gave the following recording about his wartime experiences. He died a year later at the age of 102.

  Sharon Marie Tate Polanski (January 24, 1943 - August 9, 1969) was an American actress and model who appeared in advertisements and small television and film roles. After receiving positive reviews for her comedic and dramatic acting performances, Tate was hailed as one of Hollywood's most promising newcomers, being compared favorably with the late Marilyn Monroe. Her first major role was as Jennifer North in the 1967 American drama film Valley of the Dolls, which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination. On August 9, 1969, Tate and four others were murdered by members of the Manson Family in the home she shared with Polanski, while he was away. She was eight-and-a-half months pregnant.   The years following the signing of the Armistice saw a transformation of attitudes regarding military conflict as America attempted to digest the First World War. During these years popular film culture in the US created new ways of addressing the impact of the war on individuals and society. Filmmakers created works that promoted their own ideas about the depiction of wartime service—ideas that frequently conflicted with established, heroic tropes for the portrayal of warfare on film. 
   
   
   
  Filmmakers spent years modifying existing standards and working through storytelling options before achieving a consensus regarding the fitting method for rendering war on screen. This process reached its peak during the Pre-Code Era of the early 1930s when the initially prevailing narrative would be briefly supplanted by an entirely new approach that questioned the premises of wartime service.
