Sinopsis

John Wesley Hales (1836-1914), was a British scholar, writer, man of letters and professor of English literature at King’s College in London. During his life Hales published 109 works in 300 publications in 5 languages. The Hales’ work The Leper was published in 1860 on Once a Week, a magazine of Literature, Art, Science and popular information.Leprosy was one of the greatest dramas in the history of mankind. It has affected humanity for thousands of years and has historically been associated with social stigma and discrimination. Until a few decades ago, lepers were excluded from social life, confined to reserved places and subject to incredible restrictions on their freedom. They were regarded as walking deads and treated as such. They were forced to die in solitude deprived of all social rights.John Wesley Hales wanted to devote a profound historical and intellectual reflection to this terrible drama. «We wish our readers - he writes - to picture to themselves the life that lepers used to lead. Farewell for a while to busy towns and crowded thoroughfares. Our path conducts us outside of the city, to hamlets and to hospitals all alone by the roadside, or on the bank of the river. This is the quiet life, par excellence. As quiet as the monastery before the hour of Prime. This is the life of the shunned—of men whom society casts from her, lest she be tainted by contact with them—of men that are excluded from the enjoyments, and the ambitions, and the excitements that make up the sum of life, as we value it. This is death in life—civil death and legal death, with mere animal life surviving».

Book Summary of "Sapiens" by Yuval Noah Harari

Important note: This is not the original book. This is a book summary of the following book:
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari
    About
Our species, Homo sapiens, started out as just another insignificant animal—among countless others. But at some point, homo sapiens made a rapid jump to domination over all other species. This rapid rise has left humanity anxious, destructive, and often miserable—despite all our efforts to be happy. Yuval Noah Harari's book 'Sapiens,' traces the origins and effects of what we think of as “human progress” from small bands of hunter-gatherers 100,000 years ago to the present-day global network through which our species has come to dominate the Earth. This bird's-eye view of human history delves into the development of sapiens' social organization and the structural features of human cultures through which our species has spread and evolved, including breakthroughs like human language, the use of human imagination, and the rise of the concept of a better future that lies just beyond the horizon. Through these mechanisms, our species has evolved into a species that's increasingly in control of our own destiny. This book considers how this evolution has occurred, whether this progress has been beneficial, and what the future might hold for our species.

Here's what you'll learn about in this summary:
—How our species has evolved, not just biologically, but socially.
—How history, overall, is moving in the direction of global unity of humankind.
—How none of the outcomes of history have been inevitable, and the flexible nature of the social order may mean that our species can control its destiny.

Long before the words of the Bible were written, God's communication through the spoken word rang out loud and clear. Jesus in particular commissioned representatives to speak on his behalf even during the time of his earthly ministry. And yet today we are a reading culture. It is easy for modern Christians to take for granted that the Bible was handed down in written form, but the way we receive God's message is far different from how the original hearers would have heard it. These differences not only shape the way that we hear God's message to his people, but they put us at risk of misunderstanding his revelation.
In Hear Ye the Word of the Lord, biblical scholar D. Brent Sandy explores how oral communication shaped the ways that biblical writers received God's message—and even more importantly, how the ancient and modern faithful receive it through hearing. Filled with helpful biblical insights related to oral communication and constructive ways for modern readers to become better hearers and performers of Scripture, Hear Ye the Word of the Lord provides a constructive way forward for readers interested in exploring how we can better hear God's Word.
