Just like magicians, spies need to do their job without anyone noticing. In the 1950s, the CIA even hired magicians to teach its agents how to use stealth and trickery. In The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception (2009), espionage experts H. Keith Melton and Robert Wallace detail how and why the CIA hired its first magician, John Mulholland. They then reproduce Mulholland’s manual of magic for spies - once considered top secret - which taught agents how to evade the eyes of enemies and exchange undetected information.

This recording contains four important and related works by Heidegger: 'What Is Philosophy', 'What Is Metaphysics', 'On the Essence of Truth' and 'The Question of Being'.

It starts with 'What Is Philosophy', which originated as a lecture given in Normandy in 1955, and was first published a year later. The translators acknowledge that 'What Is Metaphysics' is often regarded as a particularly key work, they feel that 'a better preliminary understanding' of Heidegger can be obtained from 'What is Philosophy'. They write: Heidegger 'is concerned with the fact that philosophy has lost its receptivity to the Being of being/entity. In other words, philosophy no longer seeks the groundless ground of Being which allows us to ask meaningful questions about being/entity, or its appearances. Heidegger uses Being as the ‘inner light’, that illumination through which we become conscious of our meaning or of our existence and of existence itself. The light allows us to know that we are 'beings'.

The second work on this recording, then, is the more famous essay 'What Is Metaphysics', published in 1929, to which some 14 years later he added a 'Postscript'. Both texts are presented here. Heidegger states that rather than enter into a discussion about metaphysics, he sets out to ‘discuss a definite metaphysical question.... Our project begins with the presentation of a metaphysical question, then goes on to its development and ends with its answer'.

In 'On the Essence of Truth', (1930) Heidegger explains: 'The question as to the nature of truth is not concerned with whether truth is the truth of practical experience or of economic calculation...or the truth of scientific research or art...or religious belief...but what is ‘the mark of truth of every kind.'

The final essay on this recording is 'The Question of Being' (1955). Its original title, (in a literal translation from German), was 'Concerning the Line', and was included in a publication honouring the 60th birthday of the philosopher Ernst Jünger. Heidegger wrote it in the form of a letter in response to an earlier treatise Jünger dedicated to Heidegger called 'Across the Line'. Heidegger questions Jünger’s notion of ‘zero line’, of nihilism: the essence of nihilism stems from a discussion of Being as being/entity.

Translations by Jean T. Wilde and William Kluback ('What Is Philosophy' and 'The Question of Being') and R. F. C. Hull ('What Is Metaphysics' and 'On the Essence of Truth').

Influence, at its core, means having the power to affect people or situations. Subconsciously, we are constantly influenced and are influencing others through countless factors that impact our decisions. Even something as mundane as choosing toothpaste involves a myriad of external influences. Influence is a universal phenomenon, not confined by species or origin. Although the factors that contribute to influence might seem endless, social scientists have identified fewer than ten key aspects. This book will explore how to effectively influence others to achieve your desired outcomes.
Influence is a part of everyday interactions, whether you're a stockbroker, salesperson, manager, employee, boss, or even a housemaid. We influence others to gain various benefits: we might perform well at work to earn a day off, show affection to receive love in return, or charm a salesperson to get a discount. We influence and are influenced in every interaction. So, how can we get people to do what we truly want them to do? Let's explore this.

Regardless of whether you're trying to influence a customer, a supervisor, a coworker, or a family member, the underlying process remains consistent, and certain conditions are necessary for achieving significant success. But first, consider why you want to influence others and whether your motives are grounded in respect, integrity, compassion, or noble intentions.

A heartwarming philosophical meditation on how to live a fulfilling life—inspired by the inherent happiness of dogs.

If you have spent any part of your life with a dog, you may have found certain questions popping, unbidden, into your mind: Is my dog living a fulfilled life? Is my dog a good dog? Does my dog love me? Addressing these questions compels you to confront not just your dog's life but yours as well—to think about what fulfillment, and meaning, in life really is.

In The Word of Dog, philosopher Mark Rowlands explores these questions and suggests that in dogs we can see hints—faint, shrouded, but discernible—of what a better way of living might look like. Perhaps none of us can be happy in the way a dog can, but The Word of Dog shows us we could do a lot better than we're doing simply by listening to the unspoken wisdom our dogs reveal to us every day of their happy, uncomplicated lives.
