Sinopsis

The Collected Works of John Stuart Mill is a comprehensive anthology that encapsulates the seminal thoughts and writings of one of the foremost philosophers and political economists of the 19th century. Spanning a vast array of themes such as liberty, utilitarianism, and the intersection of society and individuality, Mill's literary style is characterized by its clarity, rigor, and an unwavering commitment to the principles of reason and human flourishing. This collection not only includes his pivotal works, such as On Liberty and The Subjection of Women, but also offers insightful essays that elucidate the socio-political context of his time, reflecting the challenges of Victorian England and the burgeoning discourse of liberal thought. John Stuart Mill, raised in an environment steeped in Enlightenment ideas and rigorous education, was profoundly influenced by his father, James Mill, and contemporaries such as Jeremy Bentham. His intellectual journey was marked by a fervent commitment to social reform, advocating for women's rights, and critiquing the limitations of conventional morality. Mill'Äôs experiences with personal bereavement and intellectual crises deeply informed his writings, leading to a more nuanced understanding of liberty and social justice. This collection is an essential read for anyone interested in the foundations of modern thought. Readers will find Mill's eloquent arguments and profound insights not only relevant to contemporary discussions of individual rights and social ethics but also immensely thought-provoking as they grapple with the ongoing challenges of freedom and societal progress.

This dialogue explores how we may become more consistently gentle, more kind, and more tender with ourselves in this mad-paced world. How may we develop the habit of listening to that little voice inside that is so often ignored in the name of expediency? Robyn Posin suggests that we make an agreement with ourselves to take some part of every week to just listen. She says it’s important to make a habit of taking the time to sit quietly with ourselves, and reminds us that it’s also important to keep that commitment no matter what.
Rather than taking a large chunk of time, we need to allow ourselves just the right amount of time that we can stick to. It’s better to bite off something small that you can absolutely abide by than to take on something large. The idea is to keep the promise you’ve made to yourself. At first we may not hear that small voice inside because, as she states, “those parts of you have been abandoned and neglected and have managed without your attention for many years.” By being persistent and keeping your promise to sit on a regular basis you will be able to hear the voice that’s been longing to be heard. Posin also talks about how to know the difference between going as slow as that littlest voice inside is telling us to go, and procrastination. She also shares why she’s firmly opposed to compromise. This book contains these 4 titles:
    - The Arab Spring: The Arab Springs stands as one of the most transformative events of the 21st century, reshaping the political and social landscapes of the Middle East and North Africa. Triggered in December 2010 by the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi in Tunisia, the movement quickly spread across the region, igniting a wave of protests, uprisings, and revolutions.
    - The Dakota Access Pipeline Protests: The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) protests were a defining moment in the intersection of environmental advocacy and Indigenous rights. Proposed to transport crude oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota to Illinois, the pipeline’s route crossed sacred lands and the Missouri River, threatening water supplies and cultural heritage. While its proponents touted economic benefits and energy security, the project drew fierce resistance from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and their allies, sparking a global movement.
    - The Hong Kong Protests: Hong Kong, a former British colony handed back to China in 1997, has long been a symbol of political and economic success. Its unique status under the "One Country, Two Systems" framework promised a high degree of autonomy, preserving its freedoms and capitalist economy for 50 years after the handover. However, in recent years, this promise has been put to the test, as Beijing's increasing influence over the region has sparked widespread protests and growing unrest.
    - The MeToo Movement: The movement’s resonance stems from its powerful message: sexual harassment and assault are widespread issues that affect women and marginalized groups across all sectors of society, from entertainment to politics, from workplaces to homes.
