Sinopsis

The author and politician analyzes the troubled state of Britain’s post–World War II political and economic systems, and proposes a solution. When World War II ended for Great Britain in 1945, MP John Strachey wondered what he and his country were going to do with the freedom they had fought for and won. The men who ran the country before the war had taken England so far down the road to disaster that it seemed almost impossible to save. To prevent history from repeating itself, changes needed to be made.In Socialism Looks Forward, Strachey shares his plan to lead Great Britain into a prosperous future in which its people are free from want. Examining both political and economic factors, he breaks down why the system in Britain was in such disrepair prior to World War II, with some of its citizens being even better off during the war. He then outlines his proposed solution—Socialism—explaining what it would be like and how Britain could make it happen. Originally published in 1945, Socialism Looks Forward provides insight into Great Britain’s political and economic history in the post–World War II era, as well as an introduction to Socialist thought.

Written in 1916 against the backdrop of the First World War, Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism explains the flaws and power of capitalism, which inevitably lead to monopolies, imperialism and colonialism. Lenin develops Marx’s theories of political economy, which had been put forward 50 years earlier in Das Kapital. He goes on to argue that imperialism is the most advanced state of capitalism, characterised by the domination of monopolies on an international scale, with the export of capital leading to the big imperialist powers carving up the world.More than a century later, Imperialism remains highly relevant in understanding the historical background to the strategies of many of today’s major nations.

    The Conspiracists - Women...

Leafing through photos from the January 6 insurrection, extremist researcher Noelle Cook was struck by how many women looked like her: middle-aged white women in puffy coats. Women were not on the fringes of the extreme right, she realized. They were radicalizing each other, and the pandemic was changing them. So who were the women of J6? And why did some of them believe in shape-shifting reptilians and the health benefits of colloidal silver?

This is the world scholars call conspirituality, in which New Age religion, online wellness culture, and extremism blend and become laced with antisemitic and racist theories. With acute attention to the emotional lives of women and research on conspiracism, Cook introduces us to Tammy, who believed storming the Capitol would help take down a global cabal of pedophiles. We also meet Yvonne, convinced she is a starseed destined to lead others into the fifth dimension. We visit a trade show where vendors hawk everything from quantum healing devices to government cover-ups, and trace the movement's roots to a nineteenth-century mystical philosophy. Women are crafting entire worlds and we ignore these worlds at our own peril. As misinformation spreads and extremism intensifies, The Conspiracists does not seek to excuse women's conspiracism but rather to understand it. Otherwise, we have no hope of countering its force.

"Keep religion and politics separate!" For decades, scholars assumed that less religion would lead to a more peaceful and unified form of politics. And yet, as religious identity recedes from American public life, the opposite appears to be the case. Our post-religious politics are growing more polarized, anxious, and unstable each day. Could a return to ancient religious wisdom and community be the key to healing what secular politics can't fix?
In Can Religion Save Democracy? two friends and colleagues—a Christian theologian and a Muslim political scientist—make a bold case: If American democracy is going to survive, it will require more religion, not less. Drawing on wisdom from their respective religious traditions, they explorewhy secularism has only deepened our divides, what ancient insights from Christianity and Islam can strengthen our common life, how spiritual practices contribute something critical and irreplaceable to democracy, andhow citizens can navigate a new world of deep polarization and mistrust.

This is not a call for theocracy or religious authoritarianism. It's a hopeful, clear-eyed vision showing how religious faith offers vital tools to renew the soul of democracy in a divided nation.
