Sinopse

In "The Lushei Kuki Clans," John Shakespear provides an exhaustive ethnographic study of the Kuki people, illuminating their cultural practices, social structures, and historical narratives. Written in a clear, analytical style, the book employs meticulous observation and detailed interviews to capture the rich tapestry of clan life in this lesser-known region of India. Shakespear's work is situated within the wider context of colonial ethnography, revealing the complexities of identity formation and the impact of colonial policies on indigenous communities. His deep engagement with the subjects allows for a nuanced understanding of their traditions and modern challenges. John Shakespear, a British colonial administrator and scholar, was deeply influenced by his experiences in India, where he devoted significant time to studying local cultures. His keen interest in the intersection of identity, colonialism, and cultural preservation led him to focus on the Kuki clans, whose voices had often been marginalized in broader historical narratives. Shakespear's dual role as both observer and participant provides a unique lens through which to view these dynamic societies. This book is a crucial read for anyone interested in South Asian anthropology, colonial studies, or indigenous histories. Shakespear's comprehensive account not only enriches our understanding of the Kuki clans but also challenges us to reflect on broader themes of culture, identity, and sustainability in a globalized world.

The Irish Potato Famine, one of the most devastating events in Irish history, did not occur in a vacuum but was the result of a complex web of agricultural, social, and political factors that had been building for centuries. Understanding the roots of the famine requires a deep dive into the role of potatoes in Irish agriculture, the socio-economic conditions of 19th-century Ireland, and the historical context of British colonial policies that shaped the lives of the Irish people.
The potato had become the cornerstone of Irish agriculture by the early 19th century. Its ability to grow in Ireland's challenging soil and its high nutritional value made it the ideal crop for the majority of the population. Potatoes provided an inexpensive, calorie-dense food source that sustained not only the rural laborers but also their families. By the 1840s, the potato was so integrated into Irish life that it made up the bulk of the diet for the rural poor, with many families relying solely on it for sustenance. This dependency created a fragile agricultural system, highly vulnerable to disease or crop failure.
The socio-economic conditions in Ireland at the time were dire. Most of the population lived in poverty, working as tenant farmers for English or Anglo-Irish landlords. The vast majority of land was concentrated in the hands of a small elite, and the system of land tenure kept most Irish peasants in a state of near-perpetual debt. This imbalance exacerbated the poverty faced by the rural poor, many of whom were already struggling to make ends meet. As a result, when the potato crop began to fail, the majority of Irish farmers had little in reserve and were left with few options for survival.

Inside the Dyslexic Mind - A...

    Laughton King

Laughton King shares his understanding of the dyslexic mind from his own lived experience as a dyslexic child, an angry adolescent, a therapist and eventually an author. When describing what it is like to be dyslexic, he is includes himself. ‘We think in pictures, we chase words around the pages of books, and we have trouble finding any sensible connection between squiggles on paper and real things they are meant to refer to. And this all happens in perpetual reverse gear. You guessed it, for us, school is not cool, and for most of us this makes life tough’
At the heart of this book is a ground-breaking concept — the diesel/petrol analogy. As Laughton describes it, a dyslexic person is like a diesel vehicle. They run perfectly if you give them the right fuel, but if you put petrol in the tank (i.e. expect them to learn like every ’normal’ child in our current education system) they break down. This book helps dyslexic (diesel) thinkers make sense of their lives, and provides valuable guidance for parents and teachers.
There is nothing wrong with the dyslexic child’s brain. They do not need medication and do not need to be ‘rewired’ nor ‘recalibrated’. Laughton’s message to parents and educators is that once they accept this processing difference and understand the dyslexic style of thinking they can readily work with these children and help them achieve their own success.
