Sinopsis

In "The Pleasures of England," John Ruskin presents a passionate exploration of the intrinsic beauty and moral significance found within the landscapes, architecture, and cultural heritage of England. With a blend of lyrical prose and incisive social critique, Ruskin elevates the act of appreciation into a philosophical discourse that examines the relationship between nature, art, and society. Set against the backdrop of the Victorian era, a time marked by rapid industrialization, Ruskin's work serves as both a lament for the despoliation of England's natural beauty and a celebration of its artistic treasures, urging readers to cultivate a deeper awareness of their surroundings and the pleasures inherent in them. John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a multifaceted figure—a critic, artist, social thinker, and philanthropist. His early exposure to the art of Turner and the landscape of the Lake District ignited his lifelong engagement with the arts and nature. Motivated by a desire to reform society and counteract the moral decay he perceived amid industrial progress, Ruskin's reflections in "The Pleasures of England" are drawn from both personal experience and broader cultural observations, embodying his belief in the transformative power of art and nature. I highly recommend "The Pleasures of England" to anyone interested in the interplay between art, nature, and ethics. Ruskin's eloquent prose invites contemplation, making it not only a profound literary experience but also a guide for readers seeking to find joy and meaning in their own environments. This work is essential for those who appreciate fine literature and wish to engage deeply with the cultural essence of England.

For many people, skeptics and believers alike, the Old Testament is rife with controversial passages and events that make both belief and sharing our beliefs with others difficult. Often our solutions have tended toward the extremes—ignore problem passages and pretend they don't matter or obsess over them and treat them as though they are the only thing that matters.

Now with clarity of purpose and fidelity to the message and spirit of Scripture as a whole, Tremper Longman confronts pressing questions of concern to modern audiences, particularly young people in the church:

    ● the creation/evolution debate

    ● God-ordained violence

    ● the historicity of people, places, and events

    ● human sexuality

Pastors, leaders in the church, and thoughtful and troubled Christians in the pews will find here a well-reasoned and faithful approach to dealing with the Old Testament passages so many find challenging or disconcerting.

Leo Tolstoy was born in 1828 in the Russian province of Tula to a wealthy noble family. As a child, he had private tutors but he showed little interest in any formal education. When he went to the University of Kazan in 1843 to study oriental languages and law, he left without completing his courses. Life now was relaxed and idle but with some writing also taking place. Gambling debts forced an abrupt change of path and he joined the army to fight in the Crimean War. He was commended for his bravery and promoted but was appalled at the brutality and loss of life. He recorded these and other earlier experiences in his diaries which formed the basis of several of his works.
In 1852 ‘Childhood’ was published to immediate success and was followed by ‘Boyhood’ and ‘Youth’.
His experience in the army and the horrors he witnessed resulted in ‘The Cossacks’ in 1862 and the trilogy ‘Sevastopol Tales’. After the war he travelled around Europe, visiting London and Paris and meeting such luminaries as Victor Hugo and Charles Darwin.
It was now that Tolstoy began his masterpiece, ‘War and Peace’. Published in 1869 it was an epic work that changed literature. He quickly followed this with ‘Anna Karenina’.
These successes made Tolstoy rich and helped him accomplish many of his dreams but also brought problems as he grappled with his faith and the lot of the oppressed poor. These revolutionary views became so popular that the authorities now kept him under surveillance.
He led a life of asceticism and vegetarianism and put his socialist ideals into practice by establishing numerous schools for the poor and food programmes. He also believed in giving away his wealth, which caused much discord with his wife.
His writing continued to bring forth classics such as ‘The Death of Ivan Ilyich’ and many brilliant and incisive short stories such as ‘How Much Land Does A Man Need’.
In 1901 Tolstoy was excommunicated from the Church and controversially deselected for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Whilst undertaking a pilgrimage by train in October 1910 with his daughter Aleksandra he caught pneumonia in the nearby town of Astapovo. Leo Tolstoy died on November 9th, 1910, he was 82.

Sir Keir Starmer made the leap from Leader of the Opposition to Prime Minister in only four years, one of just a handful of politicians to have done so since 1945. Yet the landslide majority that Labour secured under him in July 2024 has been described as 'loveless' and his first months in Downing Street were overshadowed by rows and controversies, turning what should have been a political honeymoon into a period of sustained turbulence.
In this fully revised and updated edition of his 2021 biography, Michael Ashcroft traces how Starmer went from schoolboy socialist to radical lawyer and Director of Public Prosecutions before – aged fifty-two – becoming an MP, then Labour leader and ultimately the occupant of No. 10.
Revealing previously unknown details which help to explain what makes Starmer tick, this careful examination of Britain's first Labour Prime Minister for fourteen years offers voters the chance to assess his character and his political instincts. Having turned his party into an election-winning machine, his goal is to transform Britain into one of the most progressive states in the world. Does he have what it takes to succeed?
