Sinopse

In "My First Summer in the Sierra (Illustrated Edition)," John Muir provides a captivating chronicle of his experiences in the Sierra Nevada during the summer of 1869. Through vivid descriptions and a poetic prose style, Muir intricately weaves the natural beauty of the landscape with reflections on his love for nature. His observations are imbued with a sense of reverence and awe, showcasing not only the ecological diversity of the region but also the profound connection between mankind and the natural world. This work stands as a significant contribution to the genre of nature writing, illustrating the early conservationist ideals that eventually led to the establishment of national parks in America. John Muir, often referred to as the 'Father of the National Parks,' was a pivotal figure in American environmentalism. His travels and naturalist explorations were deeply influenced by his childhood in Scotland and his later experiences in California. Muir's passionate advocacy for the wilderness was sparked by his encounters with the majestic landscapes of the Sierra Nevada, inspiring a lifelong commitment to preserving these pristine areas for future generations. This illustrated edition serves as not only a literary gem but also a visual feast, making it a perfect choice for both nature enthusiasts and lovers of classic literature. Readers are invited to immerse themselves in Muir's poetic contemplation of the wild, gaining insight into the delicate balance of nature and the necessity of conservation, thereby awakening a sense of urgency and responsibility in the face of modern environmental challenges.

    Minding the Climate - How...

    MD Ann-Christine Duhaime

If we believe the climate crisis is real, why is it so difficult to change our behavior and our consumer tendencies?

Minding the Climate investigates this problem in the neuroscience of decision-making. Ann-Christine Duhaime, MD, points to the evolution of the human brain during eons of resource scarcity. The brain adapted to prioritize short-term survival over more uncertain long-term outcomes. But the resulting behavioral architecture is poorly suited to the present, when scarcity is a lesser concern and slow-moving challenges like environmental issues present the greatest danger. Duhaime details how even our acknowledged best interests are thwarted by the brain's reward system: if a behavior isn't perceived as immediately beneficial, we probably won't do it—never mind that we "know" we should.

Luckily, we can sway our brains, and those of others, to alter our behaviors. Duhaime describes concrete, achievable interventions that have been shown to encourage our neurological circuits to embrace new rewards. Such small, incremental steps that individuals take, whether in their roles as consumers, in the workplace, or in leadership positions, are necessary to mitigate climate change. The more we understand how our tendencies can be overridden by our brain's capacity to adapt, Duhaime argues, the more likely we are to have a future.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought forth global anxiety about linkages between the environment and society at a fundamental structural level. Earthly Order: How Natural Laws Define Human Life provides an accessible exposition of the latest foundational knowledge on how natural and social systems science can inform planetary crises. Humanity has either tried to conquer or capitulate to natural order, whereas we should be seeking to understand latent structures and patterns that permeate all systems and develop an "earthly order," that is socially functional and sustainable.

Current debates in politics often present what should constitute a "world order" while scientists have wrestled with what are fundamental conditions of "natural order." Author Saleem H. Ali provides a synthesis of these debates with practical guidance for the public with a host of current examples around environmental decision-making by consumers, the government, and industry.

How real is reality? Are our images of the world mere inventions or do they correspond to an external reality? Is it possible to know the truth?

These are some of the questions that are discussed in this book by physicist and philosopher Heinz von Foerster and media studies scholar Bernhard Poerksen. Together they explore the limits of our cognitive capacities; they debate the apparent objectivity of our sensual perception and the consequences of "truth terrorism"; and they talk about the relationship between knowledge and ethics, sight and insight.
    The authors:
Heinz von Foerster (1911–2002) completed his studies of physics in Vienna and worked at different research labs before emigrating to the United States in 1949. In 1957, at the University of Illinois, he established the Biological Computer Lab (BCL) – the cradle of the epistemology that would later cause a stir under the label of "constructivism." The focus was on analyzing the logical and methodological problems that in evitably arise when one seeks to know knowledge. He is the author of numerous books, including Understanding Understanding: Essays on Cybernetics and Cognition.
Bernhard Poerksen is professor of media studies at the University of Tübingen with a particular research interest in the new media age. His books about systemic thinking have been translated into many languages. In 2008 he was voted "Professor of the Year" in honor of his teaching. His most recent book publications in English include From Being to Doing: The Origins of the Biology of Cognition (with Humberto Maturana), The Unleashed Scandal: The End of Control in the Digital Age (with Hanne Detel), and Digital Fever: Taming the Big Business of Disinformation.
