Sinopse

John Morley's "Critical Miscellanies: Macaulay" serves as a profound exploration of the literary and historical contributions of Thomas Babington Macaulay. In this collection of essays, Morley employs a reflective and analytical literary style that is both engaging and accessible, deeply situating Macaulay within the broader context of Victorian literature and political thought. Morley's critiques illuminate Macaulay's stylistic eloquence and his historical narratives, showcasing how his works galvanized public opinion and shaped the political landscape of his time. This compilation also highlights the intricate relationship between history and literature, reflecting Morley's own philosophical musings on the art of writing and the role of the historian. John Morley was an influential figure in the intellectual climate of the late 19th century, serving as a prominent writer, politician, and advocate of liberalism. His comprehensive understanding of historical texts and philosophical ideologies, coupled with his friendships with contemporaries like Macaulay, likely informed his decision to engage with Macaulay's legacy. Morley'Äôs admiration for Macaulay's narrative style and his ability to weave historical significance into compelling prose undoubtedly shaped this collection. For readers with a keen interest in literary criticism, history, or the interplay between the two, Morley's "Critical Miscellanies: Macaulay" offers a nuanced perspective that not only deepens the appreciation of Macaulay's works but also encourages a reflective examination of the broader implications of historical writing. This book is an essential addition to any literary scholar's library.

This volume presents those writings of Marx that best reveal his contribution to sociology, particularly to the theory of society and social change. The editor, Neil J. Smelser, has divided these selections into three topical sections and has also included works by Friedrich Engels.

In his comprehensive Introduction to the selections, Professor Smelser provides a biography of Marx, identifies the various intellectual traditions which formed the background for Marx’s writings, and discusses the selections which follow. The editor describes Marx’s conception of society as a social system, the differences between functionalism and Marx’s theories, and the dynamics of economic and political change as analyzed by Marx.

Con Thien was a United States Marine Corps firebase that was the scene of fierce combat for months on end during 1967. Staving off attacks and ambushes while suffering from ineffectual leadership from Washington as well as media onslaughts, courageous American Marines protected this crucial piece of land at all costs. They would hold Con Thien, but many paid the ultimate price. By the end of the war, more than 1,400 Marines had died and more than 9,000 sustained injuries.

For eight months, James P. Coan's five-tank platoon was assigned to Con Thien while attached to various Marine infantry battalions. The author kept a diary recording the thoughts, fears, and frustrations. Time in the Barrel offers an authentic firsthand account of the daily nightmare that was Con Thien. With authentic depictions of combat, it allows listeners to fully grasp the enormity of the fierce struggle for Con Thien.

More than a retelling of military movements, Coan's engrossing narratives focus on the sheer sacrifice and misery of one Marine's experience in Vietnam. Through his eyes, we experience the abysmal conditions the Marines endured, from monsoon rainstorms to the constant threat of impending attack. Climatic moments in history are captured through the rare, personal perspective of one particularly astute and observant participant.

The love story of Zippa and Tony is nothing without the context of the Second World War.

The war introduced them - they met as blackout wardens in London. It gave them darkened streets to wander in, hand in hand, then, by sending Tony away to officer training camps, it sharpened their hunger for each other, casting a glow over his comings and goings. It turned them into schemers and wanglers against fate and army regulations. It pressed them into marriage, and when the war decided to deploy him to North Africa, it whispered the urgent question of a baby. To which Tony, thinking of the war, replied maybe not; and Zippa, thinking of the war, said yes.

In spite of themselves, the war experience was changing them both, and yet both were hanging on, looking back, suspended in memory and time, and living from letter to letter.

Decades later, their daughter Julie discovered their letters, and piecing them together began to create a portrait of her parents and their relationship that was completely unfamiliar to her. Vivid, honest and completely absorbing, Damn This War! is a true insight into a wartime love story.
