Summary

Inside Women Are from Venus, Men Are Idiots, Close to Home cartoonist John McPherson illustrates what happens when planets--and planetary beings--just don't seem to align. From memorable Thanksgiving TV-carving dinners to disjointed marriage counseling sessions, McPherson culls more than 75 relationship-specific, full-color panels inside this interplanetary ode to coupledom.McPherson's mastery in Close to Home is elevating the mundane to the magnificent. The caustic interactions between balding, bespeckled middle-aged men and auburn-haired, beehive-tressed women become achingly funny when sketched by his pen. Appearing in more than 700 newspapers internationally, McPherson's Close to Home is one of the most popular card lines from Recycled Paper Greetings.

The classic American coming of age novel of a precocious young man and the lessons learned from his tutor by “a masterly entertainer and social satirist” (The New York Times).   It is 1963 in an unnamed town in North Dakota, and Anthony Thrasher is languishing for a second year in eighth grade. Prematurely sophisticated, young Anthony spends too much time reading Joyce, Eliot, and Dylan Thomas but not enough time studying the War of 1812 or obtuse triangles. A tutor is hired, and this "modern Hester Prynne" offers Anthony lessons that ultimately free him from eighth grade and situate her on the cusp of the American sexual revolution.   In Slouching Towards Kalamazoo, Peter De Vries finds the perfect vehicle for his eridute wit in Anthony’s restless adolescent voice. Demonstrating a fascination with both language and female anatomy, Anthony’s pitch-perfect narration propels this satirical coming of age tale through theological debates and quandaries both dermatological and ethical, while soaring on the De Vriesian hallmark of scrambling conventional wisdom for comic effect.

Apocalypse got you down? Whatever you do, don't think about it!

"Hilarious would be an understatement to describe this book and I found myself lost for words." - Divine Zape for Readers' Favorite

An unknown terrorist has released a biological weapon onto the American public. Anyone with an IQ over 84 is in danger - people's heads are exploding - the country is on lockdown. Everything is about to change forever.
Luckily, some people are still alive. Like the President of the United States. And Congress. And millions of idiots determined to figure out why their heads aren't blowing up.

Which brings us to David Dingle. He's the not-too-bright guy whom this whole story revolves around. A lot of people revolve around David Dingle. Some of them include a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, an ineffective jihadist, a Grand Dragon of the KKK, a creationist and his very extended family, a pill-popping doctor, a drop-dead sexy clepto-nympho-suicidal-maniac, and a rogue Illuminati mastermind to name just a few.

Now David Dingle doesn't know much about these people, but frankly, he doesn't know much about much. He's just a simple American with a government job and a fantastic phone who one day finds himself at the epicenter of the biggest biological terrorist attack perpetrated on American soil. And now everyone's after him. Not cool. All the while, the President of the United States has to keep voters’ heads from blowing up before re-elections - things couldn’t get worse.

A timely satire that dives into the darkest corners of American Culture, IQ84 examines some of the most controversial issues in America today. It’s a book about freedom.

Connor McKnight, former acolyte of film, Zen, and Japanese literature, is not unaware that these avocations are wildly different from his present occupation as a fledgling celebrity journalist. Then there's the sister with whom he shared a flamboyantly addled childhood and his best friend, a monkishly neurotic and militantly vegetarian writer. Connor' s anxieties can scarcely be assuaged by his trio of flirting obsessions— a gorgeous stripper, a screenplay in progress, and the nature of a meaningful future. With the holidays fast approaching— and a female admirer stalking him by email— Connor gropes his hapless, hilarious way toward not so much salvation as self-preservation.

It’s June 2012. The magical and slightly cultish River Run swim club is alive with the spirit of fun competition when a perfect storm brews between team moms and best friends Gillian Cloud and Kristy Weinstein. The ghost of family addiction has turned up, looming over their carefully planned pasta parties, tie-dye nights, and pep rallies, forcing them to face their unresolved childhood trauma. Gillian responds by trying to control everyone around her while Kristy relapses into her dangerous addiction to love. Real sparks fly on the night of the derecho—a freak land hurricane—which sweeps through Northern Virginia, knocking out power for days. The storm ignites a tinder box of secrets, leaving Gillian and Kristy alone in the hot dark—their shame their only company. At times humorous and devastating, Swimming with Ghosts is a hauntingly dark, yet uniquely tender story about the various entrapments of addiction and lingering trauma and what it takes to overcome our hidden legacies of disgrace and discover a once unimaginable freedom made possible by confronting life’s greatest storms with the people closest to us.

If Sharpeis wrote sonnets and Labradors wrote limericks, of what would they muse? Jessica Swaim re-envisions classic literature through a roundup of cultured hounds including Rover Frost, Emily Doginson, and Edgar Allan Pug. Poems range from the savory “Shall I Compare Thee to a Steak Fillet,” to the reflective “Sizing Up Shoes on a Soulful Evening” and the mysterious “The Maven,” each with a cunning twist that will leave you grinning. The poets are also brought to life with distinguished portraits by Chet Phillips and insightful biographies.
