Sinopsis

Living as if an outsider, but functionally ingratiate to normal social circles, Duncan has his morality rocked by bearing witness to a violent act. Where can one land on judgement of abject behaviour when inflicted upon a person, perhaps more abject than the act itself?

Pressure to testify pushes Duncan into various forms of escapism and a consequential number of captivating encounters, all whilst trapped in a brooding vacuum of self-reflection.

Herdman's writerly magic is an underappreciated facet of Scotland's continually great literary output.

"John Herdman's impressive first novel, A Truth Lover, is written as though it had been very well translated from the nineteenth-century Russian ... Mr Herdman and his book are much too good to be localised."

P.J. Kavanagh, The Guardian

"Both brilliant and very moving indeed ... If there is to be any vigorous tradition of novel writing in Scotland then this is the kind of book which will open up that prospect."

Archie Hind, The Glasgow Herald

".... a very fine piece of imaginative writing .... This unusual novel whets one's interest in a new and most promising talent in the Scottish literary scene."

Cuthbert Graham, Press & Journal

"I find A Truth Lover the most impressive debut by a Scottish novelist for years."

Douglas Eadie, Scottish International

The five stories that made up R.B. Russell's debut collection, Putting the Pieces in Place, were described on first publication as demonstrating 'a subtle mastery of the macabre. Enigmatic and enticing, they combine a pleasing respect for the great tradition of supernatural fiction with a chilling contemporary European resonance.'

Literary Remains was described as a collection that displayed how 'love and loss tear at the fabric of everyday life and distort reality. What was once objectively familiar is tainted by uncertainty, and soon everything becomes subtly and terrifyingly altered. In Russell's stories even the present appears to be open to misunderstanding. .. . When those around you insist that they see the world differently at least you can argue with them. But when you realise that you cannot rely on your own senses then the world becomes a terrifying place indeed.

If the plan doesn’t work, change the plan not the goal.

Those words become the anthem to Soraya Gault’s life in ways she never could have imagined. Soraya sacrifices a lot to secure her future and take care of her family, but it never feels like enough.

Zamaseon Hendricks works hard and lives by his own rules. There is only one woman in his life who he is willing to risk it all for. Even if risking it all means completely altering his life’s plan, what is required of him is as good as done.

Zamaseon and Soraya have common goals, but their only option to reach the finish line means falling in line with an unconventional plan.

Reading the fine print is easy enough, but as soon as the ink dries their worlds collide in the best and worst ways possible.

He was trained to obey. Now he must choose who to become.
Injured during his advancement trial, Luca wakes among those he was taught to fear. What begins as recovery becomes a reckoning—with the City’s teachings, the Wilders’ judgment, and his own unraveling certainty.
Luca is a Prowler—an elite enforcer bred for loyalty, control, and obedience. His advancement trial was meant to test his readiness for promotion. Instead, an injury leaves him stranded in the Wilde, rescued by those the City calls dangerous and irrational.
He expects hostility. What he finds is more complicated.
Some Wilders want him gone. Some show restraint, even care. Most don’t trust him.
But it’s the ones who hesitate—the ones who study him, question him, try to understand him—that leave him most off-balance. Not because of what they do… but because of what they make him begin to see.
As his body heals, old certainties start to shift. What began as a test of endurance becomes something far more dangerous: a quiet unmaking of the beliefs he was never meant to question.
PROWLER is a character-driven dystopian sci-fi thriller about indoctrination, perception, and identity—set in a fractured world where obedience is survival… and survival is no longer enough.
