  Millicent E. Brown's family home at 270 Ashley Avenue in Charleston, South Carolina, was a center of civil rights activity. There Brown gained intimate knowledge of the struggle for racial justice, and those experiences set her on a life course dedicated to the civil rights struggle. Best known as the named plaintiff in the federal court case that, in 1963, forced the initial desegregation of public schools in South Carolina, her experiences as an activist range across years and well beyond her native state. Another Sojourner Looking for Truth is Brown's insightful reflection on her search for freedom in a nation deeply mired in white supremacist beliefs and overt violence against people of color. 
   
   
   
  In this revealing memoir, Brown writes about her fears and doubts, as well as the challenges of being a teenager expected to "represent the race" and combat negative stereotypes of African Americans.   The paradox of intelligence and friendship has puzzled both scholars and individuals for generations. While high intelligence is often associated with success and achievement, it can also come with a significant social challenge: the difficulty of forming and maintaining meaningful friendships. For highly intelligent people, the complex nature of their cognitive abilities can create barriers that make social interactions more challenging. Despite their many strengths, these individuals often find themselves isolated, misunderstood, and distanced from others who may not share the same intellectual capacity or way of thinking. 
    
  At the heart of this dilemma lies the disconnect between cognitive intelligence and social intelligence. While a high IQ may contribute to success in academic or professional settings, it doesn't necessarily translate into an ability to navigate the nuances of social interactions. Many highly intelligent people find themselves struggling with small talk, social expectations, and the emotional needs of others. In fact, the more an individual is absorbed in intellectual pursuits, the more likely they are to experience a sense of isolation and a lack of genuine connection with those around them. 
    
  Furthermore, emotional intelligence—the ability to recognize and manage one’s emotions and understand those of others—is often underdeveloped in highly intelligent individuals. This creates a gap in understanding social cues, empathy, and the emotional nuances of human interaction. As a result, even when these individuals desire connection, they may inadvertently alienate others or fail to form the deep, meaningful relationships they long for.

  Freddie Scappaticci was born in 1946 and raised in a deeply nationalist area of Belfast. When the Troubles broke out in 1969, he joined the Provisional IRA, where he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming commander of Belfast in 1984. 
   
  From the outside, Scappaticci appeared to be a dedicated volunteer, but inwardly, he had become disenchanted with the IRA and, in 1977, he started working for British intelligence. At the same time, he took up a leading role in a newly formed IRA Internal Security Unit (ISU), aka ‘The Nutting Squad’. He personally executed two suspected informers and condemned at least thirty-seven more to death. 
   
  Was he the serial killer that history portrays him? Undoubtedly. But it’s not that simple, because every time he passed the death penalty on an informer, he told his British intelligence handlers about the intended execution, giving them the opportunity to prevent the killing. 
   
  Did the tasking and co-ordinating group, the primary British intelligence organisation in Northern Ireland during the troubles, aid and abet the IRA in the mass-murder of British citizens? That is the question Richard O’Rawe poses in Stakeknife’s Dirty War. But O’Rawe goes further: he lays out a very compelling case that points to the TCGs running the IRA’s war from the mid-1980s to the 1994 ceasefire. Such was the British intelliegence penetration of the IRA, that Freddie Scappaticci, aka ‘Stakeknife’, was in control of all IRA operations in the Belfast Brigade area. This book will shock readers, and cause them to reevaluate everything they formerly held to be true about Stakeknife’s dirty war in Ireland.
