Sinopsis

In "Hardtack and Coffee," John Davis Billings presents a compelling first-hand account of the Civil War experience, expertly weaving together a tapestry of personal narrative, culinary history, and military life. The book's literary style is both accessible and richly descriptive, capturing the grit and triumphs of soldiers as they navigate the harsh realities of camp life, including the infamous hardtack and coffee rations. Set against a backdrop of tumultuous conflict, Billings employs humor and poignant observation, reflecting the camaraderie and resilience of those who lived through one of America's most defining periods. John Davis Billings, a Union Army veteran, draws on his own experiences as a surgeon during the Civil War, allowing him an insider's perspective on the daily lives of soldiers. His background informs not only the authenticity of his anecdotes but also his understanding of the psychological and physical toll that war exacts on its participants. Through his service, Billings cultivated a unique bond with his fellow soldiers, deepening his commitment to preserving their stories and the broader social history of the era. "Hardtack and Coffee" is a must-read for anyone interested in American history, culinary culture, or the personal narratives that shape our understanding of the past. Billings' work serves as both a historical document and a vivid homage to the indomitable spirit of the soldiers he chronicled, making it essential for both scholars and general readers alike.

As one of the most strikingly original lyricists going, it's entirely unsurprising that John Grant has a life-long interest in language and languages—from the academic solace he found in his school days upon discovering his talent for German, through to his love of Russian and the Icelandic language of his current home, Grant has found succour, relief and stimulation in words and how they work. In this fascinating interview with the writer Will Burns, John Grant's passion for language provides the foundations for hilarious and heartbreaking digressions on his own life, on politics, on history, on music and much more—John Grant On Language functions as a compelling and unique portrait of an artist in, and through, words.

Spell work, spiritual cleansing, herbal magic, how to protect against the Evil Eye, and cast, break, and avert hexes and curses.

Mexican witchcraft, or brujeria, has long been an integral part of traditional Mexican culture that permeates all strata of social hierarchy, ethnicity, or level of education.

"Brujeria de Rancho" refers to brujeria as it is practiced in the rural areas of Mexico. There, the brujos de Ranch offer their healing and divinatory powers, acting as advisors, and even meting out justice through the use of cursing and hexing for people who are often not able to pay lawyers' fees.

Davila, a practicing bruja de Rancho and for whom this is a multi-generational family tradition, brings this tradition to light in this comprehensive guide to Brujeria and Hechiceria (sorcery), presenting the beliefs and practices to today's listeners. The tradition includes a component of folk Catholicism that will be accessible to Pagans, non-Catholics, and practitioners of Hoodoo and Conjure. Topics included in the book are spell work, cleansings (limpias), herbs, talismans, how to protect against the Evil Eye, and also how to cast, break, and avert hexes and curses.

Eco Revolution isa humanized and eye-opening journey through the past, present, and future of one of the most crucial topics of our time: Climate change. This is a time unlike any other in human history. With the ever-growing threat of the climate crisis looming and putting the whole world on the edge of its seat, and a global internal and external revolution towards social equality, simultaneously shifting our consciousness, our culture, and our lives, we have not only entered into a brand new once-in-a-generation era of social and environmental justice advocacy — but the deep-rooted overlap between environmental crises and inequities that have been spotlighted in an unprecedented elevation of awareness. Eco Revolution is a humanized and eye-opening journey through the past, present, and future of one of the most crucial topics of our time: Climate change. This book chronicles untold sustainability history, highlights the stories of unsung eco-warrior heroes, and shares solutions for a more sustainable and equitable world, as told through the lens of award-winning environmental activist Maya Penn’s unique and inspiring experience as a young black woman and member of Generation Z who, driven by a passion for nature and its ecosystems, started her journey into environmental activism at only 8 years old. With 15 years of hands-on experience in the environmental activism space, her voice has become one of the most sought after.   Eco Revolution explores our collective connection to the natural world through inherited ecology and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) passed down through indigenous cultures throughout the world as people worked in partnership with naturally occurring ecosystems to create thriving, functional societies and how this has translated to our modern understanding about sustainability. Penn will take a comprehensive look at the current green movements around the world and how sustainable living can be reclaimed via the work of these groups, and the ways in which we can deploy creativity to bring about real change. Finally, readers will be confronted by the future--it's possibility and potential and the passing of the torch to future generations, and how we can remain optimistic in the midst of looming crisis.

Much has been written about Western intervention during the breakup of Yugoslavia, and whether it made matters worse, prevented worse atrocities, or was simply ineffective. In early 1992, however, what was clear was that Europe was hopelessly divided over the best course of action to take towards Yugoslavia, and after several years of fighting, the Bosnian War was one of the most violent conflagrations in Europe since the end of World War II.
Depending on the source, many authors have focused on different catalysts for Yugoslavia’s demise, but Vesna Drapac may have succinctly summed the situation up when he wrote that by the end, the state “lacked a reason to exist.” There is certainly something in this sentiment, but the disintegration came at an enormous cost.
Given what happened in Yugoslavia, it should be little surprise that Bosnia did not have its fully-established borders until the 19th century, and even in modern times, in many respects the people distinguished and defined Bosnia as a polity more than its shifting borders, and regardless of whether Bosnia operated as an independent state or kingdom. It was during the Middle Ages that Bosnia’s culture and ethnic makeup truly began to coalesce, despite the politically rocky nature of the era in the Balkans.
