Summary

First published in 1910, “In the Catskills” is a fantastic selection of essays concerning The Catskill Mountains by American naturalist John Burroughs. Nowhere is a love of Catskill Mountain landscape, its flora and fauna, and its people more beautifully expressed then in these eight essays. Highly recommended for lovers of nature writing and naturalism. John Burroughs (1837 – 1921) was an American naturalist, essayist, and active member of the U.S. conservation movement. Burroughs' work was incredibly popular during his lifetime, and his legacy has lived on in the form of twelve U.S. Schools named after him, Burroughs Mountain, and the John Burroughs Association—which publicly recognizes well-written and illustrated natural history publications. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
Available since: 12/02/2016.

'One of the better known foreign entrepreneurs of his generation in China.' New York Times
In his bestselling debut, 'China Cuckoo', Mark Kitto described how he 'lost a fortune and found a life in China'. In 'That's China', the thrilling prequel, he tells the story of how he made that fortune. For seven roller-coaster years Kitto outwitted competitors and jealous partners to build the most profitable and popular English language publishing business in China since 1949.
To the Chinese Communist Party, media is state-owned propaganda. No individuals, let alone foreigners, will ever have a stake in it.
No foreigner in modern times has come so close to the heart of the Chinese propaganda machine on his own terms. Not even Rupert Murdoch.
Told with Kitto's trademark self-deprecating humour and unsettling honesty, 'That's China' is a rare thing, a business saga that will have you on the edge of your seat all the way to the final showdown; in the highest law court in China.

A “wonderful compilation” of hundreds of classic dessert recipes from the man behind the brand name (Nathalie Dupree, Food Network host).   You may know his name only as a beloved brand on the supermarket shelf, but Kentucky native Duncan Hines published his first cookbook, Adventures in Good Cooking, in 1939—at age fifty-nine—after years as a well-traveled and widely known restaurant reviewer. Featuring recipes from restaurants across the country as well as crowd-pleasing family favorites, it helped raise the standard for home cooking in America. Following this bestselling debut, Hines penned The Dessert Book in 1955. Filled with hundreds of decadent treats, from homemade ice cream royale to fried apple pie to praline fudge frosting, this book inspired the recipes for the earliest boxed cake mixes and baked goods that carried the Duncan Hines name.   Featuring a new introduction by Hines biographer Louis Hatchett, this classic cookbook serves up a satisfying slice of twentieth-century Americana, direct from the kitchen of one of the nation’s most trusted names in food. Also included are plentiful tips and references. Now a new generation of cooks can enjoy and share these delectable dishes with family and friends.

“A detailed look at British 10,000-ton Treaty Cruisers. “A gem of research by the author, covering the design and progressive improvements to each ship.”—Malcolm Wright, author of British and Commonwealth Warship Camouflage of WWII   The ShipCraft series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeler through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sisterships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring color profiles and highly detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modeling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites.   This volume covers the British 10,000-ton Treaty Cruisers, thirteen of which were built to three slightly varying designs between the wars. With three funnels and a high freeboard, they were impressive ships, and all enjoyed very active wartime careers—three were involved in the Bismarck action and another with the sinking of the Scharnhorst.   “This book by Les Brown is rather like the Sci-Fi ‘Tardis’ in that its outside belies the tremendous amount on the inside.”—Malcolm Wright, author of British and Commonwealth Warship Camouflage of WWII

As Dervla Murphy crisscrossed the Balkans in a series of bicycle journeys towards the beginning and end of the 1990s, she recorded the griefs and confusions of the ordinary people, many of whom had showed extraordinary courage and resilience during that terrible 'decade of decay' and whose voices were so little heard during the conflict. Despite their suffering, she found plenty of traditional Balkan hospitality and was passed between friends from city to city and town to town. Through the Embers of Chaos describes journeys – through Croatia, Servia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania – that demanded the greatest emotional and physical stamina, while also elucidating the complex history of the both the region and the conflict itself. It's an extraordinary achievement.
