Sinopsis

In 'The 39 Steps,' John Buchan weaves a gripping tale of espionage and adventure, reflecting the anxieties of pre-World War I Britain. The novel combines elements of thriller and mystery, characterized by its brisk narrative pace and vibrant prose. Buchan employs a thinly veiled allegory of national identity and the pervasive fears of external threats during an age of burgeoning technological change and political unrest. The protagonist, Richard Hannay, embarks on a perilous journey that underscores themes of innocence lost, courage in the face of adversity, and the fragility of trust, encapsulated in a narrative rich with suspense and vivid imagery. John Buchan, a Scottish author and politician, crafted this seminal work amidst a career steeped in public service and literary accomplishment. His extensive travels and experience as an intelligence officer during World War I informed his perspective on political machinations and human resilience. Buchan's fascination with adventure, nurtured by his deep appreciation for the Scottish landscape and history, translates into Hannay's thrilling exploits across a perilous world, offering readers both escapism and reflection. 'The 39 Steps' remains a quintessential read for lovers of adventure fiction and thrillers. Its deft plotting and nuanced characterization invite readers to engage not only with Hannay's frantic race against time but also with the larger questions of loyalty and betrayal. Recommended for anyone seeking a timeless narrative that blends literary sophistication with electrifying action.

This is another slice of murder, mystery and psychic phenomena in the Reverend Paltoquet series.
Just what happened to two young women who disappeared from the Sunnyside Guest House in Blackpool just after the First World War? Their fate has remained a mystery for many years, despite attempts by the husband of the first woman and the prospective husband of the second to find out.
In 1957, Reverend Bernard Paltoquet and his good friend Dr Robbie MacTavish turn up at the very same Blackpool guest house for a fortnight’s rest and recuperation. Their summer break, however, proves very far from restful or recuperative. Robbie is visited in the night by a ghostly bed companion, and another guest, young curate Oliver Johnson, sees a ghost bleed to death in front of his eyes. The scarred landlady of Sunnyside has a secret or two of her own, as well.
Professional medium, Anna Judge, who we first met in the previous novel in the series, THE DARK SIDE OF THE MIRROR, arrives to try and contact the ghosts. However, her powers are waning and it is only the Reverend Nigel Soames who can help. Soames is a colleague of Bernard’s and is staying at the Imperial Hotel in Blackpool at the same time as Bernard and Robbie are staying at the much less expensive Sunnyside. He is an obese and pompous man (described by Anna Judge irreverently as the ‘fat vicar’) who turns out to be the unlikely and very reluctant conduit for the restless spirits that haunt the Blackpool guest house.
Bernard and Robbie, meanwhile, try to enjoy their holiday, but Robbie is spooked by ghosts and Bernard is unsettled by the attentions of another guest at the Sunnyside, the charming and beautiful Celia Pargeter.

Five months after the end of the Civil War, Acting Navy Lieutenant Everett Townsend is awaiting discharge in Key West. The end of the war has left him uncertain about his future and full of regret about the end of his relationship with Emma, the Cuban American daughter of a Havana boarding house owner. His Spanish grandmother—a slave owner who runs a prosperous sugar plantation in the Cuban countryside—is dreaming that Everett will return and take over the family business, a prospect that sickens him.

Returning from a routine supply mission from Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, he and his men are caught in a hurricane and witness a shipwreck in the Marquesas Keys. When they investigate, they discover a locked cargo hold with the dead bodies of Black freedmen. When Townsend reports this unsettling incident to his distracted Naval commander in Key West, he's encouraged to drop the matter. But he can't shake his suspicions that the poor souls from the cargo hold were destined for re-enslavement in the sugar fields of Spanish Cuba.

The murder of an American sailor in a Cuban port provides Townsend with a reason to return to Cuba and continue his investigation. A rescue of a Navy veteran leads to more clues and helps convince Townsend to become a government informant operating in the interior of Cuba.
