Sinopse

"Slave Life in Georgia: A Narrative of the Life, Sufferings, and Escape of John Brown" unveils the gripping odyssey of a man known as Fed, whose escape from the clutches of slavery leads him on a transformative journey to England. Sold into bondage at the tender age of ten, Fed's narrative paints a vivid picture of the perils faced by a young slave thrust into the rapidly developing landscape of Georgia. The narrative begins with Fed's acquisition by a slave trader, destined for the burgeoning state of Georgia. There, he becomes the property of Thomas Stevens, a Welsh-descendant planter with a cotton plantation and whiskey still near Milledgeville. Over the course of more than 15 years, Fed toils under Stevens, providing a firsthand account of the planter's brutal and savage treatment. The narrative lays bare the relentless physical abuse inflicted not only upon Fed but also upon his fellow enslaved individuals. As fate takes a turn, Fed finds himself under the ownership of Dr. Thomas Hamilton in Clinton, Georgia, where cruel experimentation, including heat remedies, becomes part of his daily existence. The narrative vividly details the harsh conditions and inhumane practices endured by Fed and his fellow captives under Dr. Hamilton's care. Fed's escape, marked by several attempts and fueled by the desire for freedom, culminates in a new identity—John Brown. The narrative follows Brown's arduous journey northward, where he finds work in various places. In a bold move to secure his freedom, Brown sets sail for England in 1850. This strategic decision proves crucial, as the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law in the United States heightens the risk for escaped slaves even in ostensibly free states. "Slave Life in Georgia" stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the quest for freedom in the face of oppressive circumstances.

A powerful exploration of self-resilience, family, and community from activist and prison abolitionist Keeonna Harris.
Keeonna and Jason met as young teens. Only fourteen, Keeonna had never had a boyfriend before, dreamed of attending Spelman to become an obstetrician, and thought she was “grown.” Within a year she was pregnant and Jason was in prison, convicted of a carjacking and sentenced to twenty-two years. Overnight Keeonna had become a “mainline mama,” a parent facing the task of raising a child—while still growing up herself—with an incarcerated partner.
In this triumphant memoir, Keeonna recalls her challenging journey as a mainline mama, from learning to overcome the exhausting difficulties of navigating the carceral system in the United States to transforming herself into an advocate for women like her—the predominantly Black and Brown women left behind to pick up the pieces of their families and fractured lives.
Keeonna speaks frankly about the forces that threatened to defeat her, how she learned to re - build her broken relationship with a mother who had lost trust in her, and how time eased the shame, guilt, and stigma of being a young Black teen mom with a partner behind bars. She offers inspiration and solace, showing how to create moments of beauty, humanity, and love—such as picking the perfect wedding dress for a ceremony in a state prison visiting room—in a place de - signed to break spirits.
Mainline Mama is about creating self-love and community—crucial acts of radical resistance against a prison industrial complex designed to dehumanize and to separate and shut away incarcerated individuals and their loved ones from the world.

Edgar Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts on 19th January 1809. His father abandoned his family the following year and within a year his mother had died leaving him an orphan.
He was taken in by the Allan family but never formally adopted although he now referred to himself as Edgar Allan Poe. His father alternatively spoiled or chastised him and tension was frequent over gambling debts and monies for his education. His university years to study ancient and modern languages was cut short by lack of money and he enlisted as a private in the army claiming he was 22, it is more probable he was 18. After 2 years he obtained a discharge in order to take up an appointment at the military academy, West Point, where he failed to become an officer.
Poe had released his 1st poetry volume in 1827 and after his 3rd turned to prose and placing short stories in several magazines and journals. At age 26 he obtained a licence to marry his cousin. She was a mere 13 but they stayed together until her death from tuberculosis 11 years after.
In January 1845 ‘The Raven’ was published and became an instant classic. Thereafter followed the prose works for which he is now so rightly famed as a master of the mysterious and the macabre.
Edgar Allan Poe died at the tragically early age of 40 on 7th October 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. Newspapers at the time reported Poe's death as ‘congestion of the brain’ or ‘cerebral inflammation’, common euphemisms for death from disreputable causes such as alcoholism but the actual cause of death remains a mystery.

A spirited dive into the life and career of a performer, writer, and director who dominated twentieth-century American comedy

Mel Brooks, born Melvin Kaminsky in Brooklyn in 1926, is one of the great comic voices of the twentieth century. Having won almost every entertainment award there is, Brooks has straddled the line between outsider and insider, obedient and rebellious, throughout his career, making out-of-bounds comedy the American mainstream.

Jeremy Dauber argues that throughout Brooks's extensive body of work—from Your Show of Shows to Blazing Saddles to Young Frankenstein to Spaceballs—the comedian has seen the most success when he found a balance between his unflagging, subversive, manic energy and the constraints imposed by comedic partners, the Hollywood system, and American cultural mores. Dauber also explores how Brooks's American Jewish humor went from being solely for niche audiences to an essential part of the American mainstream, paving the way for generations of Jewish (and other) comedians to come.
