Sinopse

It's the late 9th century, and Northumbria is subject to both Viking attacks and settlers from Denmark.

Cynn is the royal Horse-Thegn. Striving for peace and integration on his estates, he is charged by the king to end the pillaging of a foul band of raiders. Led by the elusive Edred, their atrocities have become increasingly violent, resulting in open revolt against legitimate rule.

But in the face of many external threats, can Cynn achieve his aim of a durable and prosperous kingdom, as they enter a new century?

The extraordinary story of Margaret O'Shaughnessy Heckler offers a rare view into the behind-the-scenes world of American politics from the 1960s through the 1980s.

The daughter of Irish immigrants, Margaret Heckler represented the American dream. She served as a congresswoman, a presidential cabinet secretary, and an ambassador—all groundbreaking achievements for a woman of her era. The fiery Irish Republican (R-MA) mastered the seemingly unbeatable game of being a woman in a man's world and a Republican in a Democratic state, becoming a champion for others against all odds.

Heckler was the only newly elected woman appointed to Congress in 1966, entering rooms where few women were invited before. Her landmark legislation, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, gave women the right to credit in their own names for the first time in American history. She took a lead in addressing the AIDS crisis and commissioned the Heckler Report to address the racial inequalities in health care.

A Woman of Firsts is a tribute to a woman who helped break the glass ceiling and fought to provide equality and justice for millions of Americans.

A "hauntingly effective" surrealist travel memoir about the mysterious transformations that may lurk inside us all (Library Journal, starred review).

Venice, 2020. As a pandemic rages across the globe, Zito Madu finds himself in a nearly deserted city, its walls and basilicas humming with strange magic. As he wanders a haunted landscape, we see him twist further into his own past: his family's difficult immigration from Nigeria to Detroit, his troubled relationship with his father, the sporadic joys of daily life and solitude, his experiences with migration, poverty, foreignness, racism, and his own rage and regret. But as it is with all labyrinths, after finding its center, will he come away unscathed, or will he transform into the gripping, fantastical monstrousness that's out to consume him whole?

With nods to Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges, this surrealist debut memoir takes us into the labyrinth of memory and the monsters lurking there.

She searches for truth with poet Claudia Rankine and historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr. She discusses race and gender with South African filmmaker Xoliswa Sithole and American actor and playwright Anna Deavere Smith. She interrogates the world around us with pioneering publisher Margaret Busby, parliamentarian Lord Michael Hastings, and civil rights activist Pastor Evan Mawarire—who dared to take on President Robert Mugabe and has lived to tell the tale. We also meet the living embodiment of the many threads, ideas, and histories in this book through the profile of her fabulous 102-year-old friend, Mrs. Willard Harris. In journeys that book-end the collection, Sarah Ladipo Manyika reflects on her own experience of being seen as 'oyinbo' in Nigeria, African in England, Arab in France, colored in Southern Africa, and Black in America, while feeling the least Black and most human among her fellow travelers, explorers all, against the sharp white relief of the South Pole.

1Night. 6 Women. 1 Jail cell. In this lyrical masterpiece by 2020 Sonia Sanchez-Langston Hughes award- winner Diana Tokaji, we hear the intimate stories of strangers, locked together for one long night. Meet: Baby, Alexa, Richmond, The Social Worker, Mudd - a teen, a divorcee, a sex worker, a social worker, a pregnant mom - and our grey-haired narrator who was just assaulted by the police. This book is about a harsh reality Americans should know: "Up the hall wall for pat down, handcuffed through the succession of locking doors, and now this: I am told to sit... my left handcuff is clicked with the spin of a key into a tight iron ring on the metal desk. I'm not going anywhere unless I haul the table too." This book is about love: "The eyes of each woman remain in my mind like the nurse whose eyes I bored through to stay sane in my last child-birthing, whose name I never learned, whose actual face I never took in, only the eyes, not even their color, just the saving connection of them."
"Breathtaking. Raw, Brilliant. And beautifully crafted." - Deborah King, creator of regrowing our wings: Yoga for healing trauma
"Not just words on pages - this is a taste of what life is for many." - Debra Bennett, Executive Director, Change comes now
"I couldn't put it down." - Maria Washington, founder, mothers for justice united
"I laughed, cried, and truly connected with this story of injustice and humanity." - Nadia Salazar, community and labor organizer
"Tokaji has produced a mirror- everyone should read this necessary work." - Devi S. Laskar, Author, The Atlas Of Reds And Blues

This is the story of Bonfire. This is also the story of a large part of rock history, which includes names like ZZ Top, KISS, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper and many others, and of which Bonfire is fortunate to be a part. But it is also the story of an artist who suffers from bipolar disorder, which was not recognized for a long time and which, on the one hand, drove him to unexpected creativity, but on the other hand also repeatedly brought him to the brink of collapse, where the rats and old men find themselves with ashen faces gathered. It's my story. I want to tell all these stories and not mince words. Let's go, rock on!" Audio book available in German and English.
