Summary

“Business Adventures remains the best business book I’ve ever read.” —Bill Gates, The Wall Street Journal What do the $350 million Ford Motor Company disaster known as the Edsel, the fast and incredible rise of Xerox, and the unbelievable scandals at General Electric and Texas Gulf Sulphur have in common? Each is an example of how an iconic company was defined by a particular moment of fame or notoriety; these notable and fascinating accounts are as relevant today to understanding the intricacies of corporate life as they were when the events happened. Stories about Wall Street are infused with drama and adventure and reveal the machinations and volatile nature of the world of finance. Longtime New Yorker contributor John Brooks’s insightful reportage is so full of personality and critical detail that whether he is looking at the astounding market crash of 1962, the collapse of a well-known brokerage firm, or the bold attempt by American bankers to save the British pound, one gets the sense that history repeats itself. Five additional stories on equally fascinating subjects round out this wonderful collection that will both entertain and inform readers . . . Business Adventures is truly financial journalism at its liveliest and best.

A riveting and applicable study of how Francis Marion delivered the leadership and strategy to defeat the British in the South Carolina lowcountry campaigns.Francis Marion is certainly the stuff of which legends are made. His nickname “The Swamp Fox,” bestowed upon him by one of his fiercest enemies, captures his wily approach to battle. The embellishment of his exploits in Parson Weems’ early biography make separation of fact from fiction difficult, but certainly represents the awe, loyalty, and attraction he produced in those around him. His legacy is enshrined in the fact that more places in the United States have been named after him than any other soldier of the American Revolution, with the sole exception of George Washington. Even today’s U.S. Army Rangers include Marion as one of their formative heroes. Surely much about leadership can be learned from such an intriguing personality. Leading like the Swamp Fox: The Leadership Lessons of Francis Marion unlocks those lessons. Divided into three parts, the book first presents the historical background and context necessary to appreciate Marion’s situation. The main body of the book then examines Marion’s leadership across eight categories, with a number of vignettes demonstrating Marion’s competency. The summary then captures some conclusions about how leadership impacted the American Revolution in the South Carolina Lowcountry. An appendix provides some information about how the reader might explore those physical reminders of Marion and his exploits that exist today. Readers interested in history or leadership, or both, will all find something for them in Leading like the Swamp Fox.

The New York Times-bestselling author “offers some practical tools for finding a more holistic return on an MBA investment” (David Wood, Fisher Graduate School, Monterey Institute, MBA, 1993).

As an MBA graduate, you can’t risk wasting that expensive education, so it’s time to reach for as much money and status as you can. It’s the safe thing to do. Isn’t it?

Not necessarily. Mark Albion doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but his unique perspective can help you find yours. There are other ways to look at potential risks and rewards, even when you have thousands of dollars of student loans to pay back. Money is important but it’s not the key to fulfillment. The “safe” choice, the most monetarily rewarding one, can carry enormous psychological and spiritual pain. As Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, “Sometimes money costs too much.”

In More Than Money, Albion redefines the typical way the risk/reward equation is written, using his own life story and those of the many entrepreneurs, executives and MBAs he’s met as both cautionary and inspirational tales. He introduces a framework of four crucial questions to consider when thinking about your career choices, as well as “lifelines,” principles that can help you answer these questions and guide you to construct your personal, strategic destiny plan.

A consciousness-raising book as well as a career guide, More Than Money encourages MBA students to give themselves permission to be who they really want to be and find their path of service. For, as Albion says, in the end “we won’t remember you for the size of your wallet as much as the size of your heart.”

Rosa Luxemburg (1870-1919) was one of the most able and remarkable female figures in the fight for socialism and the demolition of capitalism from the last decade of the 19th century to her death just after World War One. Born in Zamosc, a small town in Russian Poland, she rose to become a highly educated and highly principled economist and activist, working with leading figures of the left, including Lenin. And she died for her principles. After spending most of the war in prison for her activism and uncompromising left-wing views, she became, on release, active in the political turmoil in Germany, her country of adoption, working fearlessly for her cause. Following her involvement in the abortive Berlin uprising in January 1919, she was on her way to incarceration again when she was beaten to death by soldiers belonging to the extreme right. Her body was thrown into a canal. But her writings - and in particular her important critique of Marxist economics, The Accumulation of Capital - have ensured the survival of her memory and influence into the 21st century. The Accumulation of Capital was published in 1913. In it, she set out to take the views of Karl Marx further by arguing that capitalism can only exist when there are non-capitalist economies to exploit. She postulates that capitalism would stagnate were there no non-capitalist countries with economic resources to assimilate by a cruel exploitative process of destabilising natural and peasant economies. Her aim was to overcome the status quo which allowed such exploitation. Luxemburg wrote the book in a fever of excitement, but her academic training - she won a doctorate in law and economics in Zurich - encouraged her, in fact enabled her, not just to produce a polemic but to step back and survey the wide field of economics. In pursuing this undertaking, she considers the writings of Karl Marx in a respectful, even admiring manner but criticises the flaws and limitations as she saw them. Interestingly, after critically appraising analyses of the problem of reproduction by the key figures of Adam Smith and François Quesnay, she considers succeeding writers, positioning them in terms of sides, for example Sismondi and Malthus versus Say, Ricardo and McCulloch. Luxemburg does the same with her contemporaries: Struve, Bulgakov, Baranovski versus Vorontov and Nikolayen. She concludes the book with Section III, 'The Historical Conditions of Accumulation', finally focusing on the role of militarism as a province of accumulation, which could not be more relevant as the third decade of the 21st century approaches. Though Luxemburg has been criticised as presenting arguments that are in danger of becoming circular, she remains a respected figure in post-Marxist economics. And her role as a champion for the cause, especially in view of her tragically early demise, and her authorship of The Accumulation of Capital, a post-Marxist stepping stone, ensure her place in economic history. Agnes Schwarzchild's translation of The Accumulation of Capital is fluently read for Ukemi Audiobooks by Louise Barrett.
