Sinopsis

In "The Bondage and Travels of Johann Schiltberger," the author intricately chronicles his experiences as a captive and traveler during the 15th century. Schiltberger's narrative weaves together rich descriptions of the diverse cultures he encounters while being held by the Turks, emphasizing the interplay of adventure, survival, and the harsh realities of bondage. His prose is characterized by a straightforward yet vivid style, bringing to life the landscapes and peoples he observed, while also reflecting the broader historical context of the era, marked by exploration and conflict between empires and nations. Johannes Schiltberger, born around 1380, was not only an extraordinary traveler but also a keen observer of the world around him. His experiences as a young man taken captive during the Ottoman conquests profoundly shaped his worldview and literary voice. The work serves not only as an adventure memoir but also as a valuable resource for understanding the cultural exchanges and geopolitical dynamics of the 15th century, as Schiltberger's life unfolded amidst significant historical upheaval. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in travel literature, cultural history, and first-person accounts of early global interactions. Schiltberger'Äôs engaging tale invites readers to embark on a journey through time, offering insights into a world that is both foreign and familiar, making it a vital addition to any scholarly collection.

What should a therapist do when a patient reveals critical information at the end of a session?

It's a near-universal experience among mental health practitioners: a patient drops a bombshell—a critical disclosure that moves the treatment forward—on their way out, with a hand on the doorknob. This "doorknob moment" creates a stressful dilemma for clinicians, especially when the patient is distraught. Should the clinician end the session on time, or run over and be late for the next patient?

Here, seasoned psychiatrist Daniela V. Gitlin provides clinicians with a clear, evidence-based answer. By conceptualizing the functional differences between patient and therapist in the treatment relationship as a metaphor for the functional differences between right and left cerebral hemispheres, Gitlin's argument yields a comprehensive explanation for why doorknob moments occur, why they are necessary to prevent treatment stagnation, and why ending on time makes patients feel safer to deliver them.

During the reign of the Artaxiad dynasty, Armenia became a hub of trade and commerce, connecting the Silk Road and the Mediterranean world. The Armenian kings encouraged the development of agriculture, commerce, and arts, and the kingdom became renowned for its skilled artisans, writers, and philosophers. Of course, given its central location, the dynasty also faced numerous challenges, including repeated invasions by the Roman and Parthian empires, internal conflicts, and economic hardships. The dynasty’s resilience and adaptability enabled it to survive for nearly two centuries, leaving behind a rich cultural and political legacy that has endured in the region, even as its historical memory was overshadowed by its more powerful neighbors.
After the collapse of the Artaxiad dynasty (at the onset of the 1st century BCE), Rome and the kingdom of Parthia engaged in a competition for political influence in the vast territory of Greater Armenia. The Parthian Arshakunis endeavored to expel Rome from the region, aiming to establish the dominance of their own lineage. The political strategy devised by Parthian King Artabanus III, however, remained unrealized, as his sons Vorodes and Arshak I, who held the throne in Great Armenia, were deposed due to the intervention of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. By inciting the Alban, Georgian, and other neighboring tribes against the Armenians, Tiberius facilitated the ascendancy of Mithridates, the brother of Iberian King Pharasmanes, to the throne of Greater Armenia in the year 36.
This set the pattern by which the Roman Empire sought to preserve its influence in Greater Armenia by employing foreign kings as proxies. In contrast, the Armenian people and their rulers strived to emancipate themselves from Roman hegemony and the dominance of their allies.

Mythology was at the heart of ancient Roman culture, shaping the way people understood the world, their history, and even their daily lives. Roman myths were more than just entertaining stories; they provided a framework for religious practices, reinforced social hierarchies, and legitimized political authority. From grand temples dedicated to Jupiter to household shrines honoring protective spirits, mythology was deeply embedded in Roman society. These myths explained the origins of Rome, the will of the gods, and the moral expectations placed upon its people.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Roman mythology is its connection to Greek mythology. The Romans borrowed heavily from the Greeks, adapting their gods, myths, and religious traditions to fit their own culture. Jupiter became the Roman equivalent of Zeus, Venus took the place of Aphrodite, and Neptune mirrored Poseidon. Yet, Roman mythology was not simply a copy of Greek traditions—it evolved to reflect Rome’s unique values, including its emphasis on duty, discipline, and the power of the state. Roman gods were deeply tied to civic life, with religious festivals and rituals reinforcing the unity and strength of the empire.

As Rome expanded, so did its pantheon. Over time, new deities were integrated from conquered cultures, blending native Italian, Etruscan, and foreign influences into Roman religious beliefs. This constant evolution reflected the empire’s adaptability and its ability to absorb and reshape traditions to maintain social cohesion. The role of mythology also shifted, particularly as emperors began to position themselves as semi-divine figures, further intertwining politics with religion. These myths were not just ancient relics but living traditions that reinforced Rome’s identity and dominance.
