Advice columnist Olivia Penn’s cozy hometown of Apple Station, Virginia, is preparing for its annual fall festival and Halloween parade. With the hint of a new romance in Olivia’s life, the spooky season seems anything but—until a lakeside picnic with a friend catches her in the wrong place at the wrong time.
After a dead body is discovered amid an algae bloom under mysterious circumstances, tensions between an organic farm and a country club reveal multiple motives for murder. While the suspects point fingers at each other, the only reliable witness is a neurodivergent child who doesn’t speak.
When Olivia investigates why the child has linked her to the murder, she discovers that the key to solving the crime has been hiding in plain sight. As she races to collect the crucial evidence, an unexpected encounter and revelation forces her to improvise a risky plan to thwart the murderer’s scheme. With time running out, justice—and her life—depend on quick thinking and a leap of faith.

Jack Hinkley, the underachieving MI6 Station Head in Barcelona, is tired of watching the cable-car ply between the harbour and Montjuïc from his office window. But when a hijacked plane is forced to refuel at Barcelona, where it is successfully stormed, among the surviving passengers seen disembarking live on shaky long-focus television lenses are two KGB agents of interest. The natural order of things in the shadow world is suddenly out of kilter.
So begins a run of close surveillance, kidnapping and coercion that ultimately leads to a hunt for a mole in London. Once again, our man, Jack, finds himself marginalised. Instead of sinking in the toxic inertia, he uses the time to help his brother get back on track, and to rebuild his relationship with his estranged wife. Then, in a street of cramped houses in Chelsea, somebody fires a shot at him. In the shadow world, lessons are learnt late – sometimes, too late.
The Makeweight is a remarkable spy thriller from the 1980s, which will resonate with a new generation of readers, by a writer described by the Independent as "part le Carré, part Graham Greene".

1983, The Norwegian Sea: A mole is discovered within the ranks of the US Navy, prompting a volatile standoff between two countries on the brink of nuclear disaster.

As Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union reach their zenith, a chilling discovery within the US Navy sends shockwaves through the corridors of power. A mole, deeply embedded within the ranks, threatens not just the delicate balance of global power, but the very fabric of world peace.

Tasked with the critical mission of drawing out the traitor, two submarines embark on a journey of tactical warcraft. As they stealthily navigate the icy waters off the Greenland coast in pursuit of a Russian sub, a sudden confrontation erupts, revealing the stark reality of submarine warfare on the vast, cold ocean stage.

George Wallace masterfully weaves a tale of suspense, loyalty, and betrayal, set against the backdrop of one of history's tensest periods, where the true nature of heroism is tested, and the cost of failure is unimaginably high.

“Terrific exposé of the challenges and consequential decisions associated with nuclear submarine operations in the North Atlantic during the Cold War.”—Admiral Jon Greenert, the 30th Chief of Naval Operations
